If we are going to talk about the Kalashnikov design, then I have a thought to add. I have enough funds to buy a small collection of rifles that fit in one safe, but I don't have unlimited resources and have to choose each rifle very thoughtfully.
I decided that I wanted to stick with the Kalashnikov action in any semi-auto, magazine-fed rifle that I buy. I admire the AKs action for its inherent reliability and the durability. So along with the 3 AKMs that I own, I also bought a Sig 556. It is very, very similar to my AKMs and the basic design of the action is the same. The Sig 556 parts are machined very well, the trigger is fantastic, it shoots 1-1.5 MOA with Federal/Black Hills ammo, is utterly reliable, and easy to disassemble and clean. Is it worth the $1200 + accessories price? If you can still eat and pay the rent afterwards, you bet.
I'm a huge fan of the AK design, but I do tend to go after the better made examples from the available models. I also buy better accessories, like Blue Force Gear - Vickers slings and Magpul / Bulgarian waffle mags. I learned a long time ago that it's less hassle in the long run to get the well-made version (and spend a little more if you must), as you will certainly have less headache than if you got the version that isn't as well-made.
