Why do you own guns?

According to the FBI, our fair city is #2 in the nation in violent crimes (rape, assualt & murder) behind Miami, and #2 in robberies and burglaries behind Tucson. Man, I go armed when I take the garbage out, or take the dog for a walk!

As of Friday we have had 91 murders this year. I haven't watched the news this weekend, so I'm sure it's up a couple. So that's why we have guns in our home/life.

Plus, they're so darn much fun!

Because they look better on the coffee table than a book. It also help weed out any die hard socialists/commuist/liberals (anit-gun ones)/etc when looking for a date. :scrutiny:

My first recollection of shooting was at the age of 6, Daisy Red Rider, and no, I didn't shoot my eye out. My grandpa and uncle took me out in the yard and explained it all, and before long I was hitting an empty BB carton at 20 feet. :D

Got my pellet rifle at age 7, first .22 rifle at age nine along with a pump .410 ga shotgun. Shot my first deer at age 11. I was born to it, IOW.

I got my first handgun at about age 18, though I'd shot my uncle's K22 masterpiece a lot. I started carrying as soon as I could afford a .25 auto, for protection. I'd already had a close call late at night after work coming home from my summer job. That happened at about age 16 and I never forgot it. I escaped that deal, carried a hunting knife rest of the summer. But, I was about 20 before I could afford a .25 auto, working my way through college. And, yes, I carried it illegally, so sue me. :p

I have duck hunted since the age of 14, hunted doves and deer since the age of 9, handgun hunted, small game were every day when I was out of school. It's in my blood, gun ownership, and there's no way to change that. It's more than a hobby with me, it's my life. Guns are my weapons of choice, of course. I feel it my God given right, constitutionally affirmed, to own them. Sarah Brady can KMA.

Protection of my family and family tradition. There has always been a gun in my home ever since I could remember. My Dad had a .22 rifle in the house. Years later my Grand Dad moved in and he brought some shotguns. I continued that tradition when I bought my own home. My step-son also has his own Remington 870 Express. Nothing like family traditions.

As introduction and indoctrination tools into the lifestyle. My father used them to brainwash me, I've done the same thing to my kids and several other friends in my life.
Something about a controlled explosion with the end result of safely placing a round downrange.
It could also be the history involved in several of them, when they were made, where, what they might have done in the hands of others.

My slingshot broke and I can't afford to fix it!!!!;) Honestly, because shooting is a great hobby/sport that one day may save my life.

SD/DH -Yes, well prepared for both.

Inheritance / Family Heirloom -Yes, a 1917 Enfield 30-06, and an M-1 carbine

Competition -Honestly, I am a humble man with modest skills. When I have more money.

Hunting -Pheasants, deer, elk, and any rodent that gets too close.

Other -Exercise your rights. If you don't, you will have people questioning whether or not you need them in the first place.

-added as an afterthought, I have accumulated a degree of skill as a soldier in combat shooting, and I feel like I have some degree of responsibility to maintain that skill. I would feel very foolish indeed, if one day, I was called upon to use those skills, and realized I hadn't thought about it in 20 years or more.

Why do I want to own guns, well.. because The Constitution says I can... I own guns, primarily, because I enjoy shooting them. I like the feel of the gun kicking in my hand, the look of a paper target with a hole in it. I like the feeling of pride I get from putting all my shots on target. I like the weight and engineering that goes into modern firearms and ammo. I like machines that work the same way, every time, in any conditions.

As hobbies go it is a lot less expensive than boating, parachuting, bass fishing, etc. A total newbie can buy a .22LR target pistol for under $200. If you shoot a brick of ammo a month you will be out about $120 a year plus range fees. After five years of steady practice you should be an expert marksman with that pistol. Total expenditure is under $1000... what other sport can you spend so little to gain so much?

A gun is a tool similar to that 3' long piece of pipe I put on to a breaker bar to free up a rusted bolt. I am capable of projecting only so much force. When I need more force than I can muster in a given situation I must use a device to multiply that force.

A man is not a man unless he can protect himself and his family. YOU and ONLY YOU are in command of your destiny and future. Why rely on others to save you?

Quoting me, from a previous post very similar to this one.

Because without them it would just be silly to have all this ammo. :neener:

As MCgunner stated "It's in my blood". I was 4 when I learned to shoot with
a .22 cal CO2 & 5 with a Ruger Single Six and Sterling .22. It is a part of me
and always will be. 26 years later and I'm still learning, loving, collecting, and
shooting firearms whenever I get the chance.

I have them for sport, HD, and CCW. Each one services a purpose... even if
that purpose is to fill the "cause I wanted it" void.

An answer I may never be cruel enough to use

Why do I own guns?

Just lie back on the couch and tell me about your childhood, your fears, and your fantasies. That way, perhaps, I will be able to understand your inner needs well enough to distill an answer from the complexities of the universe that is both truthful and simple enough for you to understand.

It was my father who taught me to shoot, always went shooting together since I was about 7 years old.My love of shooting and owning guns is due to him.
Besides some of his firearms he passed on to me,I have "widened" my collection beyond what he ever had,and it keeps growing.
There's the shooting aspect, then there is the collectable aspect for a couple of my military arms, for instance a pristine all new FN49 7mm and a all original M1 carbine.
My dad was a lifer in the Army,Gary Owen Inf. in Korea,1st Cav,Gunship crewchief in Vietnam, among other things. He shot on a competition pistol team while in the Army also, still have his trophies.Hmm,his B-day is next week, gotta get him a present, love you dad!

Why do I have Guns ?

Why do I have Guns ?

I was raised in an Anti-Gun family in New York City,
If You had firearms, it was considered bad form.
Although My Mom often told stories about how Grandma had an old
SAA Colt's Revolver in a drawer, They lived on a remote farm, and sometimes
Drifters would get tough, when They knew Gramps was away on business.
I was always an avid reader, and one day I found a Stack pole book,
called Gun Control, and it really opened My eyes to what Gun control is,
A big lie.

My Uncles hunted, and had firearms, and when I visited them, they would preach to Me about the benefits of firearms and the NRA.
Then when I was 13, I was rewarded with a vacation to My cousins home in to a Carribean Island ! and there was where I hunted for the first time with Air rifles and shotguns.

I own Firearms because they are the Eye Teeth of Liberty and Freedom.

1911JMB, I had to laugh when you wrote that. Because all my life I have heard. The bigger the gun the smaller the dick. They say guys have big guns to make up for what they don't have. I am not saying any thing about you. But thank you for the laugh.

In that case, I guess I should look for this as my carry weapon :

:neener:

Actually, I carry a gun for self-defense, like everyone else. And to defend those I care about, should it be necessary. EOS

Though the S&W 642 does balance out my other pocket nicely

I almost forgot the real main reason.

because "I felt a surge of power, like god must feel, when he's holding a gun."
-Homer Simpson
