Why does .40 S&W suck?

I don't like the snappy recoil and don't see a need to buy one when good 9mm ammo is available.
The only advantage I see with 40 is mag capacity and scoring rules for certain gun games.

The fact is that the difference in terminal ballistics for combat calibers is negligible. Since I tend to look at the platform over the caliber anyway, I favor the .40 for practical reasons. Namely the fact that I can shoot 357 Sig out of the same pistol with a simple barrel swap (and with a factory barrel no less).

Lots of LE organizations use it

that means = cheaper defense loads ammo

It is a little bigger, ans sometimes little means a lot.

Everything I've read, seen, or heard about concerning rappers and gangstas says they're almost all using 9mm. I've yet to hear anything at all about the endorsing the .40 until this thread.

While not a fan of the musical genre, I do seem to recall that famous DEA agent, moments before attaining immortality as the dumb a$$ who shot himself in the leg, mentioned something about "this is a Glock .40, this is what Too Short and Fifty-Cent and all those guys are rapping about . . ." or something to that effect.

The 165 gr .40 cal wound channel shown above seems to have a larger permenant wound channel than any of the others, including the .45. The 9mm wound channels appear significantly smaller than the other two calibers. Penetration, of course, is about the same for all.

Your thoughts?

999 (who doesn't even own a .40)

Have owned a few .40cal weapons---the only one I kinda wish I still had is a Ruger PC4----very unlikely I'll ever own another .40 pistol.

Tried it---didn't like it----tried it a couple more times---still didn't like it---now I'm convinced its just a bad round----give me a 9mm or .45 any day.

You can't say I didn't give it a chance.

Not enough shots and that darn snappy recoil(not conducive to accurate shooting)---Guess I'm a 9mm guy----but do own a .45 and wouldn't feel underarmed if it was all I had. My .45 will shoot rings around any 9mm I've owned.

The .40 just sucks.

Great round. More capacity than a typical .45 and, more power and larger than a 9mm. I feel very comfortable using it and carrying it as a defensive round. It's accurate and the recoil is not what people make it out to be. People that say .40 S&W is too tough on them must not shoot 10mm, .357 mag, .44 mag, 480 Ruger, 454 Casull, etc. I find my XD-40 and my BHP .40 a pleasure to shoot. Yes, I have 9mm's too. I like them both. Matter of fact, 9mm +p is not much less recoil than the .40, if any.

its not really that the recoil on a .40 is too much for me.. I just don't like the way it seems to be much sharper and snappier than a .45. With a .45 recoil feels like a fluid motion, with a .40 it just feels to me like somone kicked the muzzle of my handgun. I woulds say that the strength of the recoil impulse though is about the same for .45 and .40

The .40 sucks 'cause it isn't $5 for a box of 50 HSTs, other then that - near perfect round. A little snappy compared to the lesser 9mm, but still not too bad.

Mississippi Rifleman, where are you on the coast? I'm in Long Beach.

MachIVshooter, I think driving fords is like the Indian caste system. You're born into it and there is no escape. I am very happy with my 2006 F-250 Super Duty, though. I had a POS jeep before that and swore off chryslers which means no Dodge. I don't like the way Chevy's look. I wouldn't consider a gmc, toyota, or nissan. I haven't met many chevy men that I can talk any sense into

Hmmm.
My Sig P226 (stainless) shoots hard, fast and accurate with the .40.
I'm over the recoil.
I like a big, fast club.

The king ranch is nice. Almost too nice. I threw Max and mary in it to go hiking yesterday. NOw it smells like rotton Malinois Farts. Jeanne got pissed. And asked why I got such nice leather, to haul around my stupid attack dogs. I told her they like it.

Needless to say, she did not wear the cheerleading outfit last night. Gotta watch what I say. ;)

THAT nasty .40 cal

greetings, I guess I will submit my $.10. FIRST, FOR THE "RIFLE" GUY: thank you for pointing out the inherent shortcomings of pistol ballistics compared to shoulder weapons, and I must admire your commando-like skills of "using your pistol to shoot your way to your rifle" . John Woo could probably use you in his next Bruce Willis movie. While I stand in awe of your prowess I am sad to admit that the rest of us who carry handguns( doomed to defend ourselves inadequently) must carry a reliable pistol. So I guess .40, 9mm, .45apc doesn't matter, but I came up with a new scientific method........SHOT PLACEMENT /ACCURATE DELIVERY OF VOLUME. bullets are by definition, little fast moving pieces of metal that if placed properly puncture, tear, rip, displace, ruin, and otherwise damage flesh and other flavors of meat that are relatively vital to the bullet catching host organism. the heart, brain, liver, and spleen become displeased and often times refuse to work properly when invaded by 1000 feet per second metallic invaders. in short the .40 is fine, so is the .45 and 9mm and 10mm,and .357 mag and etc. What is not fine are misses, and ftf. rifles are great, but anti-tank rockets tend to surpass them in terminal results, and considering self defense is often a quick nasty little affair occuring within 7 yards, within 5 seconds, and over in 3 rounds , your truck mounted rifle isn't as menacing as the cz-75 in your hand.....................next I would like to address the gentleman (and his comrade) who appear to favor ballistic testing on pitbulls. how cute. killing politically incorrect canines to give weight to a message thread? you could probably also kill a cape buffalo with a pool cue if you stuck it far enough into an appropriate orifice. happy hunting , brave eradicator of the menacing canine threat. (i used to burn ants with a magnifying glass when I was 6, so I feel your thrill). next.....(this is fun). THE .40 WORKS FINE, if you hit valid target material. they all work if you hit vitally, nothing works if you miss.

SHOT PLACEMENT

shot placement, shot placement, shot placement..... centermass, squeeze, centermass ,squeeze.....repeat as needed. platform reliabilty counts more than caliber at defensive ranges. all 9mm and better work if you get good hits. one shot stop data is crap, shoot until threat is stopped.

I intermittently shoot .357 magnum when I want sharp recoil...I don't need to replicate it by shooting .40 S&W...:scrutiny:

I'm also mostly a revolver shooter, so I stick with .38spl & .357 magnum...the semiautos I tend to get into the collection ever now and then are 9mm based due to the price and high availability of ammunition

Hate is probably too strong a word, for me anyway. Disinterested would probably be better.

I have fired a friend's Glock .40 and I was impressed, not only with the .40 but the Glock.

Still not interested / impressed enough in either one of them to buy them, though.

This link gives the back round and inside info as to why the FBI dropped the 10mm.

http://www.home.earthlink.net/~gnappi/history.htm

40S&W as discussed since handgun rounds are so poor as "manstoppers" why the heck waste your time with a downloaded pu$$yfied version of the original round?
Also the fact that S&W made the most guns chamberd in 10mm and they then came out with thier new "PET" in house round to replace the 10 its not a big surprise they dropped all 10mm production. Reducing the number of tens out there was a nice way to get the short and weak foot in the door.

I spent the other afternoon shooting my longslide witness loaded with Double Taps Bullet : 200gr XTP/JHP Ballistics : 1250fps/ 694ft./ lbs.out of a 4.6 BRL
out of my 6.5 inch BRL it wouold be at least 150 faster. I was hitting my targets at 300 yards. Do that with you 45acp or the 40 weak sauce Had plenty of folks there so don't say it can't be done since you can't.
I even tried it at 500 to challenge myself no spoting scope so all I could manage was hits in the sand about 5 feet in front of the holder whem I could see the hits.
This was done at a private club in NH at 93 and exit 20 I was a guest of one of the board members

There is a reason the 10mm has NEVER caught on.
It is the "jack of all trades, and a master of none".
Self Defense loads are close to the .40S&W. Some will say you can use for hunting. In many areas of the country, the 10mm is illegal. Either because of the round, or because of the sem-auto issue.
All this for more cost.
I tried a G20 (didnt care for the block either) at one time. I found nothing special about the 10mm. I found my other semi-autos, work better at CCW and night stand. My big bore revolver's work better for hunting.
The 10mm offers me nothing I want, or need. I think it's clear, many others feel the same way.

While I have many SA and DA revolvers, I have sold all my semi-auto's except for a S&W M&P .40, and a SA 1911 Loaded.
I am more than happy with the .40S&W and .45ACP.
They are both, great rounds.
