Why does Oregon's CCW law blow?

We are headed to the coast and I called Salem to see if they wold recognize my Idaho CCW permit, of course not, but they did say that a local sheriff could issue me a non-resident permit if they wanted to and that it was up to them if they felt like it. . I thought, OK, let the politics begin, and I called Mahluer county as they are the closest.

Weeeeellll, frick, the sheriff said that he does not issue to non-residents, he FEELS that there is no reason and doesn't want more guns in his county and that it is his perogative

I asked him what forms of carry are legal and he said as long as it is in the motorhome I am fine but not to take it out of there. Well poo, I guess we will be secued half of the time.

This is why I like living in a "shall issue" state, as long you meet the requisits you get a CCW. gosh darn socialists

Anyone know any gun friendly sheriffs in Oregon who will give a non-resident license?

CCW in Oregon doesn't blow from a resident's perspective. However, we have one of the older statutes on the books in the "modern era" and it was passed before the reciprocity craze incorporated in later passed laws. The situation here is one of a Republican dominated House and Democrat controlled Senate with a Demo governor, so nothing is going to change anytime soon. Try all of the OR/ID border counties, there should be someone who understands the issue of reciprocity and CCW. I'd try Baker and Wallowa before Malhuer as you found out. If they ask, especially in Wallowa, tell them you are going to be on the Snake later this summer and you don't want any "wet border" misunderstandings if they will just cover you with a permit.

go visit packing.org. I know the sherrif of whatever county Astoria is in has been very friendly in the past to WA residents seeking an out of state permit. Also, maybe you could open carry. My understanding is that open carry is technically legal, except that cities may make laws against it. Check the laws.

We are shall issue to residents. Shame Oregon can't get its act together regarding recognition of other states' permits. I'm good to go in Idaho with my permit.
