Ok here is my view you can get a concealed carry permit at 21 in colorado, but you can open carry at 18, i really would prefer to conceal carry but considering im not 21 yet and i have two more years im stuck with open carry. Is there something im missing or is this one of those laws that will never make sense?

You problem is this - you are young and naive.

silly silly boy - NEVER try to apply logic to gun-control

It just doesn't work

(This was intended as sarcasm not condecension)

Because you have to be 21 years old to buy a handgun

Only from a dealer. You can buy them all day long through private transactions in most states.

Like mentioned earlier, trying to apply logic to gun control laws will not give results.

Yea the law makes no sense, I just get tired of being looked at all day long as the 19 year old kid with a colt python on his hip ;) I started open carrying at 18 due to the frequent amount of cougar and bear encounters on horseback trails and at my house.

OP: I'm not sure, to be honest. It seems counterintuitive, and it may vary state to state. Speculatively, It could stem from most people's thinking that "you have to be 21 to buy a handgun," whether that is correct in their state or not, and writing laws based on that belief without checking the other law first. It could be because your state, at one time, did restrict handgun ownership to 21+, and changed that without changing CCW laws.

Or, it could be that it's a simple way to limit practical carry to those 21+ without dealing with the political problems of trying to raise the age of ownership for handguns. Your guess is as good as mine (I'm in the same boat you are, FWIW).

I know and i dont see this law getting changed due to the fact that the only people who care are between 18-21 anyways so we dont have numbers on our side.

Because you have to be 21 years old to buy a handgun

If you believe that is the reason they can't CC, why are they allowed to OC at 18? Just curious.

Sonier - because the law makes no sense. Sorry I don't have a better answer for you.

I'll almost guarantee that if you open carry as a habit, for the next two years, you won't see any point in carrying concealed. But of course, get the permit anyway.

It's because young men 18-to-21 have a reputation for drinking, driving too fast, chasing women, and thinking with their zippers instead of their brains. Those facts are what raise car insurance rates and make law makers reluctant to change the laws.

I live in a University town, the paper is filled each week with dozens of arrests of people in that age group. Exceptions to all the rules....many youngsters are more adult in their behavior than their parents.

I don't have any links but I have read that the last part of the brain to mature is the part that deals with judgement and that part does not mature until aprox 21 years of age.

If you think of it ( and you are older like me ) then that explains why 18 and 19 year olds do some of the silliest things at times that someone just a few years older won't.

You have to have a certain amount of emotional maturity to be trusted to CCW and most people younger don't have that maturity.

yes rembrandt i understand that but they can open carry at 18 so the concealed carry has no major impact for the drinking crazy teens

When I was 18/19 I was all for complaining about the law. Now I only have a few months till I am 21. So since I won't be affected by the law I jut won't care anymore (This is how politics works).

OP, it says you are from CO, I think you have nothing to worry about OC'ing in that state. If anyone confronts you just tell them the law says you can and its for protection from wildlife. Of course, I sure wouldn't confront some dude with a Colt Python on his hip... :D Actually, I would confront you, only to compliment your firearm.

because they want to make sure we can handle the big boys first :D like the 7.62x39mm x54r 308 30 30 30cal 223
then if we can handle them, they will let us get the ccw permit; with tiny little handgun caliber :)

I think its the dumbest thing ever. I think we should get small calibers first then the big stuff at 21.

Hey! we drive 1ton, 2ton vehicles why wont they let us handle pistols!

lol thanks Big E yea my colt python was my grandfathers he carried in through vietnam, I am just worried about getting in confrontation them trying to confiscate the pistol. I am looking for another decent carry pistol atm.

Because everything has to start somewhere, and thats the age the politicians picked.

Why do you have to wait till you're 16 to get a drivers license, yet can drive all over the farm in a truck or on a tractor?

Because everything has to start somewhere, and thats the age the popiticians picked.

Same reason I waited till I was 26 to order and get my 1st Corvette, it was amazing how much safer a driver I became on my 26th birthday.

I can conceal carry legally on my farm so thats not a valid argument,
theres no difference in concealed carry and open carry in the public, you have a loaded pistol on you theres no difference you are still responsible

It must be like booze.
In three years everyone becomes all of a sudden magically well behaved and law abiding citizens.

You are using logic to show the law is flawed....and you may have a point. Rather than preaching to the choir, take that same reasoning and pursue this with the legislators who can change it. It will be both enlightening and educational on how to change the law. You'll find that not everything can be explained with logic, sometimes these laws get enacted by emotion and public opinion. If you try to change the law be careful the attention doesn't have the opposite effect that might add tougher restrictions to open carry.

Government exists in that wonderful realm where common sense does not apply. They can decide you have achieved sufficient maturity for them to send you to kill or die in their name, but you aren't chronologically mature enough to drink a cold beer on a hot summer day( :neener: ) or be trusted putting a coat on over your OCed handgun during a blizzard.

Don't worry to much about it, CC is way over rated, and a lot less comfortable. 'Sides, yer totin' a Python, why would you want to cover the old war horse up to start with?:)

hahha yeti i want to conceal carry when i am in certain areas such as reciprocary states, or those crazy cities like denver and colorado springs, where open carrying will definately get attention and will get you arrested such as denver.

thinking with their zippers instead of their brains.

This logic tends to follow us to an extent our entire lives.

The only point we stop is when our zippers become so rusty they no longer work. Medical science, namely Pfizer, has given us wd-40 as a temporary fix but eventually the zipper rusts shut. Then we no longer care and we develop Alzheimer as a self defense mechanism so we no longer can remember how awesome it was thinking with our zippers.

Back to the op:

I believe it is this reason alone:
It's because young men 18-to-21 have a reputation for drinking, driving too fast, chasing women, and thinking with their zippers instead of their brains. Those facts are what raise car insurance rates and make law makers reluctant to change the laws.

Unfortunately, by the time you figure out how to properly protest the law, organize enough people to do something about it and talk with government officials about it....you will be over 21 and no longer care.

I was better off without a ccw in my younger days, but I'm sure some young folk would do just fine.

well the open carry isnt bad surfer i do it a lot, but in january when it gets -25 it is. We had last year in january a cougar attack and kill 3 of our sheep, and when you get out in the morning check to see if everything is ok then head off to town, open carry becomes a Pain In The A its hard to open carry over 5 layers of clothes, and it just dont look right lol
