It looks like THR is a popular place for THR members to get their RKBA news alerts/threat info, based on this thread. It stands to reason, then, that we all need to understand why that is so, so as to not muck it up in the future.. :).

So why do you like to use THR as a principal source of RBKA information?

The reliability factor is high for me. Each time there's a "OMG THIS IS THE END THEY'RE COMING FOR US!!!" type of scare the immediate response here is deep digging by the members to figure out what the issue really is, what enemies are able to make this happen, what legal avenues do those people truly have to enact their wishes, what forces are already mobilized against them, what the likelihood of their success is calculated to be, and what can we physically DO about it.

The world is just chock full of folks blubbering in fear over every perceived threat -- folks who seem to WANT to revel in despair and to repeat and expand the grossest misrepresentations and exaggerations of threats, getting themselves and everyone else tied up in ineffectual knots of panic. That's not allowed to propagate here and I LOVE that.

All of the above. We generally don't have the ignorant, the vulgar and the Chicken Little types, and when we do they either don't stick around, or wise up.

If I wanted to read a bunch of hillbillies and F-bombs and racist political garbage, there are a million other forums for that.

I've also learned a lot from THR.

"All," but I voted for "Other."

(I'm not sure I understand the "Access" commentary, though.)

What I like is that even newbie questions, no matter how elementary they may be or how often repeated, are answered with courtesy --even if it's just a reference to a previous thread on that subject. This, even if it's closed with an "Asked and Answered" comment from the mods.

I also pick up a lot of accurate and well-thought out discussions on even the "can of worms" threads... like the one on Velocity and bullet weight, where there is no "real" answer, but the discussion itself is nevertheless enlightening without decaying into liturgy and dogma.

I posted "Other" for two reasons. The first is that I usually hear about things here long before it makes it into any of the typical news outlets and a day or two before organizations like SAF send it to me by email. The second reason is because this forum is tightly moderated to keep things on topic and focused, which does touch upon the reliability aspect. Other forums may deal with these same issues, but they often devolve quickly into wandering, divisive political discussions.

A good example of what I am talking about is the whole Mark Kelly buying an AR15 incident. It was all over this forum (and others) several days before it made it into non-RKBA media outlets as a side note and before he came up with his excuse.

All of the above, but what brings me back is that It's the least "internet-y" forum I've ever found.

People usually put work into disagreeing rather than responding in one-letter words and insults, and when they don't, the mods do a dang good job of shutting unrestrained idiocy.

THR is the first place I go for firearm related information. I do get the GOA alerts on Facebook. I read nralia from time to time. I also go to the Open Carry site in the Kentucky section for info news and firearm happenings more specific to Kentucky.

I will check out other state specific sites from time to time like nyfirearms.com, calguns, vcdl and njgunforums to keep alert to the latest happenings.

THR is my fav due to the lack of smut. Its workplace safe, child safe and we generally keep things on topic. I'm by no means totally adverse to smut, cursing or other adult(ish) topics, but that stuff is everywhere online and its nice to have a sort of safe haven amidst all the garbage we are forced to see on TV or on other forums. For instance: Thank you THR for not having Avatars, which usually turn into smut factories. I dont think we need to see naked women while viewing a thread about firearms responsibility. Its nice to keep it clean when we are tired of everything being so dirty.:)

It was my favorite for several years. I would not say it's my favorite forum anymore, but I do frequent it about as much as some of the others. When you realize that it's the internet, and should be taken for what it is; it becomes a lot more fun and digestible. There are some pretty solid folks who post, and there is also some great info. You just have to filter out the fruit loops to get at it.

I chose the first option the reason why is because I like that the mods keep it under control here and it isn't a OMG they's coming for our guns bubba stock up on beans and gunpowder

My main reason for hangin out here has changed since I found this forum.

In the beginning (2009) I started hangin out here because I found the reloading subforum very interesting.

I was a noob & knew absolutely nothing about reloading.
By reading a number of posts here I learned about Lyman's Reloading Handbook.
So I went to the library (they had #47) & I read it cover to cover. (several times)
I've since updated their collection to include #49.
If you have manuals you don't use, consider donating them to the library.
The life you save may be your own (when the person in the next lane didn't make that fatal mistake.)

I REALLY wished I knew a reloader, but didn't.
So I had to learn somehow.
And this was the place that had the knowledge.

Now 4 years & about 40,000 rounds later, I hang out here cuz I can give back to the hobby I love.
I can also pay forward to the new guys & gals.

(and yes, 40,000 rounds, I keep a tally & so far in 2013 I'm up to 10,450)
As a disabled vet, I find shooting to be a sport that I love & it kinda forces me out of the house.
So I go usually 2 or 3 times a week.

My gosh, I could NEVER afford that if I didn't cast my own & reload.

I live in California, I also frequent the calguns website, however that site is prone to a lot of put downs and political bickering. By comparison THR is a breath of fresh air.

Other.

The collegiality sets this place apart. It really is a "highroad" and a breath of fresh air.

Reliability helps, its a bit slower, sometimes (probably due to the moderation) but that helps things in my opinion. If I want fast breaking news, I'll go somewhere else. When I want in-depth analysis that helps me make sense of the fast breaking news I come here.

Option #5. THR is not my primary RKBA source. Since I live in Southern California Cal guns dot net is our primary hang out. California always has a gauntlet of restrictive laws to oppose. THR would be second. The Firing Line is my least favorite with several moderator problems.

The folks around here are nice.

Be well
Bob
:D

I chose other... its just CONVENIENT, I was already here reading up on reloading, rifles and everything else.

What happened to the choice "It's Not"?

This is a good baseline place to keep in contact casually with RKBA news.

It is a great improvement over the moderator v/s member adversarial ethos seen on TFL, and it is a very nice and easy way to casually enjoy a conversation.

The answer to the poll is really "all of the above" but one thing that makes THR stand out is the lack of the constant partisan political rant we read on almost every other firearm based forum. It gives us a place to rationally discuss the issues rather than read post after post after post of the Conservative/Liberal squabble.

For me in IL, the ISRA site is my primary for RKBA threat news. THR is great for crowd sourced and searched info that is, to a much higher level than other places, accurate and reliable.
I recommend it to folks seeking reliable firearm info in all aspects.
