Why the 870 Express hate?

I went to ACADEMY SPORTS to check out the 50 or so shotguns they got sitting on the rack that you can play with.......so there I am........checking out the BENELLI's.....
MOSSBERG's and REMINGTON's......I have no favorites at this point!

I'm about to buy my first shotgun for HD so I'm pretty clueless about these until I did my research, online, of course!

Of ALL the shotguns sitting on the racks, guess which had RUST??? I was shocked to see 6 REMINGTON's with RUST!
I axed the sales guy about it, he sez, "oh, it's just surface rust, cleans right up!"

I know REMINGTON has sold 10 million guns, but DAMN.....
If I owned the company I would resolve THAT issue PRONTO!

get the benelli....not even in the same league as the other two.....mossbergs are nice guns, but kinda cheap feeling once theyre broken in...parts get sloppy.....my remington was a pile of crap, as you could see from the video i posted....my nova is a dream! and so much easier to take care of

only thing i dont like about the benelli is the recoil is a lot harsher than my remington....my 870 express was the softest shooting pump shotgun ive ever shot....but if the recoil ever bothered me enough with the nova they make those 10 dollar recoil pads to slip on the end, but its not enough to really bother me...shotguns are supposed to kick lol

This thread makes me wonder how some people dealt with rust before all the hi-tech finishes and polymer coatings and metal treatments out there today... Not to mention the higher quality steel used these days. Personally, I had a Remington 870 and while it would rust a little here and there; Regular, proper cleaning and use of a protectant (eezox or whatever it is gets a lot of votes... I used a silicon rag) will eliminate that problem. If you're lazy (like me) then a can of krylon is a temporary fix and durakote (spray and bake) works much better. Aside from the finish, the 870 is a fantastic (if heavy) shotgun, and mine was very reliable. It had the smoothest action of any shotgun I'd owned to that point, and once I spent $40 on a durakote kit, it was better looking and had a more durable finish than my neighbor's mossbergs. All (including the durakote kit) for under $250.

i'm kind of lazy when it comes to cleaning up my express, and it shoots and cycles everything from cheapo wal mart winchester bulk to good stuff perfectly, i like it and i'll buy another if i ever wear this one out, so i'll prolly never buy another. i put about 300 rounds through it almost every weekend, and have since i bought it used a few years ago. no hate here.

thanks
sam

excuse me wasnt the express made to compete with mossberg 500 and maverick 88? both these were chaper entrys. to compare any of theses to a wingmaster isnt a fair comparasion.i had a express it was not a bad shotgun .i had a chance to buy a beneli nova used so i did it. after awhile i decided i liked the nova better and sold the express. nothing wrong with it i just liked the feel of the nova better.

i like my express, you like your nova, it doesn't matter to me what you shoot, just that you are being responsible and shooting. keep shooting and enjoy whatever it is that you choose to shoot, it's cool in my book that you are shooting.

I love my 870 Express. I think it is the best model for the new shooter or a shooter on a budget. Sure it is the cheap model but it was one that my wife could afford to buy me on our limited income 13 years ago. It has seen a little bit of rust but that was always my fault for not getting it cleaned promptly. I just gave my son a new 870 express youth model for his birthday and I am not disappointed. For the first 25 rounds it functioned flawlessly. I fully expect him to be able to pass it on to his children when they are old enough.

i keep hearing this from remington owners.....

my father-in-law has a mossberg 500 that was bought new in 1995 and it has not one time been cleaned or oiled aside from whatever oil was on it when it came out of the box brand new.....not a spec of rust, never one problem shooting or extracting....the gun is completely flawless, looks brand new, and fires like a dream....its been in the snow, drug through the woods, and used around the farm for killin varmints....to me, THAT is a quality gun

im not even a mossberg fan since i think they feel a little cheap once theyre worn in and all the parts stop feeling so snug, but i would never argue with their durability....while the 870 might be an ok gun (if you get a good one), i would never take one again over a mossberg 500 or a benelli nova...the 500 and the nova are in the same price range as the express and imo are both better guns....theres no reason for an 870 to rust as much as they do....other manufacturers got it right, why cant remington?

the only positive thing i have to say about 870s is their easy to take-down for cleaning (my nova kinda sucks for take-down) and they shoot very soft (because theyre quite heavy)....my father-in-laws 500 and my nova (more-so the nova) both have a considerably heavier kick on the shoulder

one thing for sure i bet the 870 has put alot of food on a table somewhere. its been around forever. somebody likes it

I bought a Remington Express with the 18" barrel & extended mag tube a few years back. I live in Savannah, Ga. The salt air rusts everything, & I mean everything. I've rubbed the Express down with Rem oil a few times. It stays in my gun safe beside my other guns. No rust in two years. No failures to feed, fire or anything. It was cheap, it works as expected. I didn't know I was supposed to hate it. Now that I know this, I'll have to be a little less supportive of 870 expresses.

Sometimes I think the threads reflect some true bad experiences with a gun, BUT there are also those members who have never had an experience with a gun, but want to sound off on what they have read and/or heard... So five bad experiences become 25 negative posts on a gun. Reading where a gun rusts & having a gun rust are not the same experience. I take the hearsay with a grain of salt. It's kind of like the threads where a poster will say that a certain manufacturer's guns are total junk & he'd never ever own one. That's a different experience than the post that says I've owned one of their guns and it was total junk. Just saying...

I have 2 870 express shotguns and I've had them for quite some time now, and no rust at all. They get used just about every weekend and I don't baby them, I clean them once a month after about 300 to 500 rounds each, they have never let me down.

ANY gun will be a rusty turd and not function properly if it's not taken care of....it's a machine....all moving parts are metal on metal and needs attention from time to time! I have a mossberg 500 and my brother has his 870...we regularly go through 1000 rounds at a time at the range every other weekend or so....never had a problem with either of these "cheap" guns.

Count me as a repeat owner and fan of my Exress 870s. The first one spent many-if not most-of it's years as a "boat gun" for fishing and hunting on the Kenai penninsula lakes and rivers. Oiled frequently and cleaned occasionally.
I understood the Express to be the redheaded stepchild of the Wingmaster, but did not treat it poorly. The bead blasted finish holds oil better than a smooth polish, and moisture also.
It has had thousands of rounds of everything put thru it and not a single FTF or eject in about 20yrs of recreational shooting and small game hunting.
I recently purchased a second one for my son, he's about 80lbs and has put a couple hundred rds. thru it with no problems. It was very rough and stiff to cycle when new but shooting and oiling has been rapidly improving that.

I have a 60's vintage Wingmaster here, a Sportsman 12 magnum (mid level before the express) and an Express.

Aside from the potmetal/aluminum trigger group of the latter 2, the differences are cosmetic.

The Wingmaster has deep rich bluing the Sportsman can't compare with and the Express is just a dull textured park job.

ALL of them will bust clays, kill birds, deer and goblins.

I have not experienced any more failure with one over the other.

*UPDATE*

In my original post I mentioned my 870 Supermag had a one time problem ejecting. Since then I have been out to the cornfield twice and fired a variety of ammo through it without a single issue. Everything from 2 3/4 low brass walmart special to recomended Remington brand 3 1/2 turkey load, including leftover Bismuth and Tungsten that I've had for years. Its like the one time issue (and worry) that I had about my brand new shotgun has just simply fixed itself. LUCKY ME!
