Why would anyone need a .458 in hawaii?

I wouldn't buy a rifle just for the fun of it, but would probably buy a box of ammo if someone would let me shoot a few rounds through their rifle.

I've owned several Marlin 45-70's over the years and finally sold the last one about 10 years ago. With the hotter loads recoil was brutal from a lightweight Marlin lever gun. Much worse than the 375 H&H and 416 Rigby that I've had an opportunity to shoot in the past.

The most recoil I've ever dealt with were some 12 ga, 3 1/2" turkey loads from a Remington 870 Supermag. That works out to about the same or more recoil than a 458 depending on actual rifle weight. I don't want a turkey bad enough to do that again.

Pretty much all of mine were purchased or assembled for fun..... practicality often plays a less...uuhhh.... prominent roll
They DO all get used, or they are sent on their way.....but if someone forced me ro justify most of them, id be hard pressed to do so with any ease.

Recoil with those particular loads in that rifle....which i think is about 11.5lbs.... is way less offensive than even 3" heavy field shells from a 6.5lb 12ga.
Actually the .375s more offensive to shoot unless benched, as its recoil is noticeably sharper.....still neither are as nasty as a light rifle in a fast 30 shooting heavy bullets.

Same. Some years ago, I paid a fellow club member $20 to let me fire two rounds out of his .460 Weatherby Magnum. To date, it's the most powerful riffle I've ever fired.

Heavy rifles just for fun? Yeah. I have two that I plink with......because I am not ever going to Africa, nor am i gonna hunt anything bigger than a hog.
375 H&H....plinker load is 235 grain SP at 2900 fps.
.416 Rigby.....plinker load is a 400 grain SP at 2400 fps (+/- 100 fps)

On sale now for only $120 a box!

I've hunted deer and pigs with a 458, although I used medium warm 350 grain loads rather than full power 500 grain. It worked terrifically well at close range and recoil was a LOT less than full power elephant loads. I finally got tired of lugging a 9+ lb rifle around for deer though.

I hunt turkey with a 6 lb Mossberg 500 and 2 oz 3" 12ga loads. It gives a solid kick, but it's a slow push you can roll with. I once took a shot at a turkey that came up from behind me and I had to roll to my right to take the shot. I didn't realize my right shoulder was resting on the tree trunk with nowhere to go until I fired. Now THAT hurt. I won't make that mistake again!

My Zastava .458 is a very viable hunting gun. Loaded with cast bullets, or 405gr Remington jacketed soft points, it is suitable for anything in the hunting woods. Less bloodshot meat than a 7mm Mag. After all, a 20 gauge slug is what, .62 caliber? If I ever make it to the dangerous game fields, I can shoot factory loads.

They have feral cattle on Hawaii you can hunt, they tell me they can be large and dangerous.

I have a Marlin 45/70, you can get loads for it from pretty mild to some I don't care to fool with again. A lot of people will refuse to shoot it even with the 405 gr's, which are very mild in it, a good bit less than many shotgun loads.

Well I see you beat me to it. I watched a TV show about them years ago, it was very thick where they were hunting them.
I thought it was some kinda inside joke the first time I read it. Can't you all find a more menacing name than "feral cow"?
I mean, even domesticated ones can be temperamental, so I'm sure wild ones can be pretty obnoxious. But that's seriously the best they can come up with?

We do! Kinda a hike to go get them now tho lol.

You could always use it to shoot snakes...no...wait a minute...
If it hadn't already gotten a nickname, i would call it my " SQUIRREL!!!"

Rifle.......

Ive alway prefered to call them pipikaula, luau, stew....or just dinner.....but lunch and breakfast work too......

Sometimes they get called other less flattering stuff........

Feral cattle hunting comes up mostly for Hawaii, but some years ago, I read of it in Texas and Louisiana.
Like feral pigs and goats, shooting out livestock gone wild should be encouraged to get pressure off the native wildlife.
It has been years since I was on Hawaii and they were then kind of dancing around the problem. Seems like they are more sensible about it now.
