Why would anyone need a .458 in hawaii?

I wouldn't buy a rifle just for the fun of it, but would probably buy a box of ammo if someone would let me shoot a few rounds through their rifle.

I've owned several Marlin 45-70's over the years and finally sold the last one about 10 years ago. With the hotter loads recoil was brutal from a lightweight Marlin lever gun. Much worse than the 375 H&H and 416 Rigby that I've had an opportunity to shoot in the past.

The most recoil I've ever dealt with were some 12 ga, 3 1/2" turkey loads from a Remington 870 Supermag. That works out to about the same or more recoil than a 458 depending on actual rifle weight. I don't want a turkey bad enough to do that again.
In 7 decades of gun owner ship only two were purchased for “other than fun”. Both of those are carry pistols. Shotguns and rifles for the fun sport of hunting, or in the case of the shotguns clay target shooting, pistols and revolvers for the fun game of target shooting. Some where in the neighbor hood of 80 guns or so. Just saying. Military and police use weapons most of us just use, for lack of a better word, toys. ;)

Feral cattle hunting comes up mostly for Hawaii, but some years ago, I read of it in Texas and Louisiana.
Like feral pigs and goats, shooting out livestock gone wild should be encouraged to get pressure off the native wildlife.
It has been years since I was on Hawaii and they were then kind of dancing around the problem. Seems like they are more sensible about it now.
Kinda sorta.....there have been a number of reduction and eradication efforts on most of the feral/random animals that are around, but often they arent hugely effective or are really just management moves.
Theres also alot of community push back because pretty much everything we hunt came from somewhere else.....well actually everything we hunt came from somewhere else.
It will be interesting to see if efforts like removing the wild cattle, and reducing the sheep population on maunakea are impactful, or if more destructive things like the pigs simply fill the voids.

Heavy rifles just for fun? Yeah. I have two that I plink with......because I am not ever going to Africa, nor am i gonna hunt anything bigger than a hog.
375 H&H....plinker load is 235 grain SP at 2900 fps.
.416 Rigby.....plinker load is a 400 grain SP at 2400 fps (+/- 100 fps)
Thats pretty close to whats in that video lol...
The other guns my .375 Ruger shooting factory 250GMX at about 2850, the .458s running 405s probably around 2400.....once again i didnt think to chrono the .458 till after the ammo was all gone.

When I was there, the main concern seemed to be goats.

And there is the problem, seen in a lot of mainland areas, when hog hunting becomes a lucrative sport so the operators don't want them eradicated, no matter how much damage they do to crops and native wildlife.
Right now they are getting the least attention or well, less attention, but yeah they were the "problem" animal for a bit.....tho now thst ive said thst im not sure what efforts are being taken on them, i simply havent heard much for a few years.

As far as .458 for fun, I recall the guy here saying of one: "I pulled the trigger and could just feel the fat squishing out from under the buttplate."

Another friend was shooting his .45-70 Marlin, loaded like Elmer did.
A bystander said "That's a nice looking .30-30 you have there."
Friend replied "It's not a 30-30, mister."
Bystander "Sure it's a .30-30, I know a .30-30 when I see one. Let me try it out."
Friend "OK, here."
Bystander fires a shot, rocks back on his heels, swings the lever and looks at the empty. "That's the biggest damn .30-30 I ever saw."

Worst kicker I ever didn't enjoy was a .416 Remington in the light gray Kevlar stock of the day.

The heavies recoil gun I own is probably a 3.5 inch 12 gauge pump-gun. That said over the span of two weeks, three consecutive weekends I first put a bit over half a box through a 416 Rigby, the following weekend a box and half through a light 458 Win Mag and the final weekend I sighted in my 12 ga with 3-inch slugs for deer season. It would take me a year to get my right shoulder back to 100% again.

Chickens, it's chickens!

Little buggers are everywhere. Probably not PC, but I still say they should issue every homeless person in Honolulu a pellet pistol and have them go at 'em.
Brah! Dey not homeless, dey houseless!
Just ask em! :D

After having put 15 dollars worth of arrows into one annoying rooster, and having it both survive and come back twice, im not sure a pellet pistol would do the job......

Trail Boss and SR 4759 are your friends:cool:

And Ball C isn't. A guy here tried to download a .458 with it and had the most erratic shooting I have seen, culminating in a hang fire.

Trivia: Before the brass industry caught on and started making some of the old calibers besides .45-70, some BPCR shooters wanting more punch chambered single shots for .458 and called it the .45 x 2 1/2" Belted. Of course now you can get .45-90 2.4", .45-100 2.6", and .45-110 2 7/8".

It is a great little round easy making brass to. That one my day built on a model seven magnum action was Brutal tho. To bad the 450 bushmaster was not a 458 bullet, I would get an American and ream it out.

Youd still need bolt face work as well..... While I want a 458 American, I think just loading the 450 Bushmaster or 458 socom to full potential in a bolt action is probably a bit more practical.
