I have 7 CCW's as I travel A LOT. I am constantly afraid I will bring the wrong one with me as I dont carry all 7 with me at all times since my wallet is just not big enough, in fact no wallet is big when you have credit cards, frequent travel cards, membership cards, etc, etc. I was debating having an ID tag printed up with all my CCW #'s and corresponding state abbreviations and putting it on my key chain in case or in my wallet in case I was carrying and accidentally brought the wrong permit or who knows what. This way I could at least give an LEO the orrect permit number and my drivers license in a state where I must inform an LEO I am carrying. This may be a complete waste of time, just like having a drivers license number but no drivers license if I get stopped for a traffic violation.

at any rate, I have never brought the wrong permit as far as I know, and I havent gotten pulled over in years, so I may be creating a solution in search of a problem...but I figured I would ask anyway.

Most stipulate you must have it with you.

What about putting them (The extras) in your shaving kit. That's what I do with my Surefire batteries. When you are in the new state... check.

have them with you, at least in NM when we run your DL we also check (I think this state's) CCW registry. I get hit back n my CAD with your information on your CCL. At that point some cops may re-approach and request your CCL. i have yet to encounter one.

JLStorm, not a direct answer to your question but an indirect one. We carry our permits on our person at all times. When we travel, we also have photocopies of our permits in our luggage. We have additional copies in a filing cabinet and in our safety deposit box. When we travel out of town we also carry an inventory of all firearms we take with us. It's a nuisance. We do it anyway.

JL, perhaps you need to thin out your wallet. I carry a small wallet, in my front pocket. It has (very little) cash, a debit card, a credit card, my DL and my chl. If I'm going somewhere that I need a membership card I add it and then take it out when I get home. I found that most of the "stuff" we carry in our wallets is never used.

I keep my CCW permit and my "not a registration, Michigan not safety inspected safety inspection cards" in one of those student ID holders that they issue to college kids... you might try that...

No idea whatsoever maybe tomorrow when I'm at the office I can check. Interestingly enough I did stop a Texan today that handed me his CCL. I hate the fact that I can't use my CAD as my car is in the shop. I kinda like to know who I'm stopping.

Rattlesnake, have you stopped any non-resident retired peace officers who were carrying? With retired credentials, or with the new Fed. 418 "retired peace officer" law???

Just wondering.

L.W.

Can you believe that I forgot my damn wallet today! I was on a 6 hour trip to VA and thankfully only 40 minutes into it when I realized what had happened and turned around to retreive the wallet and CCW's...I swear this never happened before I posted this thread lol.

As far as suggestions of smaller wallets, badge holders, etc...no offense, but you guys obviously arent "road warriors" my life needs be with me at all times. All my cards...beause I am on the road 90% of the time I never truly unpack and hotels/ rental cars are not that safe storage places, the information I need such as credit cards, licenses, work ID's, govt ID's , CCWs, membership cards etc all need to be on my person. This works fine in the wallet I have, but its the 7 CCW's I dont have room for. I can fit two in there at most, which might not be enough if I am going to more than a few states in the same week without returning home.

I thought of getting another wallet just for CCW's...but the last thing in life that I want is another wallet, which is why I was hoping the numbers themselves may help me out of a jam if I were to be one CCW shy or accidentally brought along the wrong one...but it doesnt sound too likely that would be the case :(

I don't know about you but my CCW is a hell alot more important than any credit card ! A little reorganization of whats in your wallet may be in order .

Im not going to get into this again, but if you dont live out of a suitcase for a living and are not on the road away from home most of the time, your idea of what is required for daily life and work in a wallet really isnt relavent.

Moving on, this isnt about my wallet, its simply a question of if the CCW # is worth anything more than the ink its written with if the actual card is not in your hand...going forward LEO opinions only please.

Here in Washington, it is not enough simply to have the number. The law expressly says you must have the card on your person; failure to have the card itself is prima facie evidence that you are carrying without a license, which means they'll maybe haul you off to spend the night in jail while they sort it out. You might encounter a sympathetic officer, but then again, you might not. Maybe not worth the risk.

My husband lives out of his suitcase, too. He carries a lot of his "gotta have this with me" stuff in his daytimer rather than in his wallet. Hardly worthwhile to add one more thing to keep track of, I know, but might be worth thinking about anyway, if it turns out a lot of states are like Washington.

I lose daytimers :( and anything else that isnt in a holster, or in my pocket...'

It seems like a few of the state laws (including PA) are worded the same as Washington. I was kind of hoping that if I at least had the numbers written down on something I could give an officer in a worst care scenerio and he was able to verify them somehow that he/she would at least give me some effort points and take pitty on me.

In Tennessee, you must present the actual permit/license upon demand by a LEO. To my knowledge, just having the number would not suffice.

Which 7 states' permits do you have ? It would seem that there would be a lot of reciprocity overlap among 7 different permits...so much so that 2-3 could cover the same ground as 7.

PA, FL, NH, ME, CT, NV, UT

I can do without NH I dont think I can carry in PA being a resident without a resident permit. UT has states that FL doesnt, ME, NV, and CT are only valid in their respective states. NV I use A LOT, CT I use often, ME I dont use that much.

Florida and Utah are good ones. They cover a lot of ground.

Nevada, Connecticut, & Maine appear to be the party poopers. It looks like they will only recognize their own permits (packing.org)

And I guess you're obligated to have a Pennsylvania permit.

Sooooooo......I guess you really do need to carry all of them at once, huh ?

Glad I could be of assistance ;)

Most states will require physical posession of the CFL with the gun. Just having a list of permit numbers does no good. Similar to states that require you to have your actual drivers license with you when driving.
As someone who does field service engineering and repair for years, I lived out of a suitcase.
Best idea I can come up with for you is to plan your route, have the card that best suits your travels in your billfold, have the rest in your luggage, change out as needed. A business card case works for me for all my contact cards.

From what I have researched, most every state requires you to have the permit on your person when you are carrying a firearm. So your numbers will not be good enough.

I use to live out of a suitcase also. Was fun and exciting when I was younger. It can be a hassle at times and you do live out of your pockets and briefcase most the time.

Only thing I can think of would be to try and find a larger billfold. Have you tried one of the large trucker types? Not sure if it would work for you but I do know they hold a lot.

i carry them with me all the time. there's a nice imprint of a RI CCW on my right butt cheek right now. :neener:

seriously, I also have photocopies of my DL and every CCW i have in the glove box of the car or in my luggage JUST IN CASE.

call me paranoid, but photocopy backup is insurance against shady cops who might confiscate or conveniently "lose" your CCW (as happened to a THR member in Philly not too long ago, I think).
