Something I have been mulling around in my head...probably me just being paranoid, but I figure I would ask for opinions.

You for whatever reason decide in this particular situation it is better to give over your wallet with credit cards and ID to de-escelate the situation than it is to draw and fire. Are you now at more risk than someone who does not possess a ccw? I doubt a BG would stand there and look through your wallet and come accross your CCW, which might lead to him attempting to take your weapon, but I could easily imagine him liking your home for a target now that he has your address and knows there are guns to steal.

I personally have a number of CCW's and have to keep them in a wallet of some sort so that I have all of them whereever I go as I travel frequently. While I dont keep cash in my wallet, cash alone I would imagine isnt enough to deter someone who wants to steal everything you have on your person.

Comments, ideas?

Well, I doubt a mugger will take the time to go through it right in front of you.

I learned after several role playing and simunitions scenarios to carry my cash and credit cards in a money clip. I won't fight over $50 in cash; its not worth my life. However . . . IDs, family pictures, things with home addresses on them . . . people sometimes are loathe to hand those over, and these are things commonly carried in a wallet.

I've also found in my daily comings and goings that a money clip is just easier and much more convenient to use than my wallet.

:) I'm sorry I had to laught at this post, The things people can find to worry about never ceases to amaze me.:)

While he's fumbling through the wallet is a great time to ventilate him.

Honestly though, I think you're being a little paranoid.

Money clips are great they are definitely more convenient than a wallet.

I have way to many forms of identification and credit cards that I need to carry for work to use a money clip for all of them. I do use a money clip for cash though.

in response to other posts, yes I am probably am being paranoid, and if you want to laugh at my question...hey maybe I deserve it, but nonetheless, it was one of those things that got me wondering so I figured I would bounce if off a few other people to see what they thought.

Mad Chemist you almost had it right. I carry my wallet in my left hip pocket and once got stopped on the street by a bg displaying a knife. I reached behind with both hands when he told me to give up my wallet and money, brought out the left with the wallet and extended it to him as I drew my sob .45 and told him to drop the wallet, the knife and himself to the pavement. He became very co-operative and claimed he didn't know I was a cop and how sorry he was and could'nt I cut him some slack. I backed up about ten yards keeping him covered and used my cell to call 911. I thought the cops were going to shoot me when they showed up even though I was talking to the 911 person as they arrived. The dummy could have gotten up and ran off with his knife and my wallet at any point before the cops arrived but he didn't. I don't think I could shoot a fleeing mugger.

If the mugger is digging through your wallet looking at your ID and things, why not take the opportunity to shoot him? If he's already threatened to kill you and has a deadly weapon, you are still in imminent peril. For all you know he's looking to see if you have enough money to justify keeping you alive.

Forget shooting him, if he's distracted riffling through my wallet within arm's reach I'm just going to give him a heaping helping of pavement. I don't have to draw and fumble with anything for that.

The last 2 people that I know that were robbed had a similar thing happen to them. Rather than ask for their wallet, they were told, "Gimme the money!"
Both carried money clips. One handed over his MC, the other pulled both MC and wallet and held them over his shoulders. Only the MC was taken. Neither was harmed, neither lost his wallet. Leave your money out and seperate, chances are pretty good only it will be asked for. YMMV

If he's armed you're going to try to grapple with him?

So he just assumed you were a cop and dropped to the ground, or did you imply in some way that you were a cop?? I am not going to get on your case if you said you were a cop and you aren't, I am just wondering if a guy sees you with a gun and assumed you were a cop....if so thats pretty funny haha

STOP! POLICE!

I was once told that you can and should yell STOP! POLICE!
You are telling the BG to stop and calling for the police to come and help you. You are NOT telling the BG that you ARE the police.

Err...how about you try that one out and when you get out of prison let us now how it worked for you :neener:

I dont know who told you this...but did they have a beer in their hand at time? :D

Sure, if he has his nose stuck in my wallet (usually takes two hands). Leg in front, elbow in back. Pavement. When he's on his face I'll make the choice to put a hole in him or not depending on what he does; Blasting somebody as he's riffling through my wallet doesn't seem like such a defensibly sound plan.

If he's too far away, sure I'll draw on him. Either way he's going to be eating pavement (or lead).

It's not defesible to..

blast someone close enough to grapple with but it is if he is farther away?

Teh street thug who is going to rob you in this situation wants cash. Credit Cards are evidence against him, as is everything else in a wallet. It's the more sophisticated crook who wants the plastic, not the street thug.

That said, a wise man once told me when i was preparding for a trip to Chicago to carry $25 in fives and ones in my left pocket. If someone robs you, pull the cash and throw it one way while you run the other way. Thug wants the cash, so he'll go the other way, too.

I have a second wallet (small, thin, cheap) that was really to protect my "smarttrip" card (a farecard for public transit around here). One of these threads suddenly made me think that it would be a great decoy so I cleared out anything important, put a few items in it (like the fake credit cards you get with advertisements) and keep $20 in it.

Can't CCW in DC or on my commute so I figure if it comes down to it I'll throw the "decoy" wallet away and get the hell outta dodge!

I do the cash thing in one pocket and the wallet in the other. I have no problem with handing over the cash...certainly is a tough shot to the ego though. It really disgusts me that my best option is to just give up and submit to one of these people...I will do it, but I would rather the government pay a finders fee for bringing in his body

For some members of society, shooting a LEO will "up" their street credentials...

I'd go with a cheap money clip with a bunch of low bills, for the most part I carry no cash in my wallet at all.

What worked for me twice was asking a robber, this was in California, "Do you want my badge and my gun too?" and they both ran off. I do and did look like a cop. I admit I did carry in Kali but this was in the 80's when it wasn't so rediculous for gun laws. I heard that saying in a movie and it did in fact work for me. Neither of these dirtbags had a firearm in sight so I knew I could beat either on the draw if they tried...so I wasn't woried. I did de-escilate the situation with the question though....I won;t hand over my wallet to a robber though, I will take it out and hand him the money, but if one pointed a gun at me things may be different!

Don't yell POLICE yell FIRE FIRE you'll get a LOT more attention.
People will ignore the first but can't get out to see the latter fast enough. Something primal about watching something burn to the ground

once

in yet another unnamed third world country.....

I was actually a teenager at this time and my dad had told me about keeping cash in places other than wallet or front pocket of hip pack.

A very persuasive guy was trying to talk me into buying some little sculpture (he had just stolen from a store come to find out later). He started kind of touching me and appeared to not be too aggressive but definitely was saying 'give me some money' and started reaching for my wallet. I was a bit overwhelmed at 15 years old or so...he just reached in my hip pouch and I realized I didn't have to escalate! He grabbed the three bills that were in there and jogged off. It all happened really quickly. 50 feet from me he turned and said, "What is this? Is that all you got?", and decided he had had enough attention from others and took off. All he got was a couple of bills worth about 15 cents American.

Now, had I had $100 in that front pocket I would have been much more defensive possibly getting myself or the guy hurt, or both.

anyway just my 2 cents....er....15
ST

ps - I vote for back pocket cash...
