So while browsing my local mom and pop shop for pistol powder I ran across a very old looking somewhat rusted can of Winchester 571. Having not heard of the powder I did some research and learned it has been out of production for a while now. I found some old load data in one of my old edition manuals and figured it would be worth a shot for some 38special loads. I went back to the store and asked the clerk if I could check out the can of powder. A jokingly made a remark about it sitting on the shelf for the last 20 years and he smiled and said let me see if I can get you a discount. He came back and said $8.00 out the door. I figured if the powder was contaminated from exposure I would only be out a few bucks paid and left. Got home and surprisingly the can was sealed and loads have been working out great! Now I have another problem. Where can I get more Winchester 571!!!

Great powder! Like you, I recently encountered 5.5 pounds of W-571 at a price I could not refuse - $5 out the door. Total.

So far, I tested it with great results in .357 Mag, .44 Mag, 9mm, and .45 acp. This powder is fantastic in my .357 Magnum loads! Cleaner than H-110 and it results in single-digit SD over the chrono.

There are lots of 10mm and .40S&W reloaders who miss this powder, and I can see why.

By the way, you probably already know this, but just in case - Winchester 571 and Hodgdon HS7 are the same powder. That helped me find proper loading data for my stash of 571.

Yes I came across this when I was researching 571, apparently HS7 is also discontinued? At any rate my newer manual does not list HS7 or 571, so it helps to have older loading data on hand.

I liked HS-6 for full power .357 Magnum loads especially with lead bullets. I'm now using HS-6 instead. At one time I used 3 of the 4 HS powders.
