One wonders why Winchester does not offer their Model 70 Super Grade in .308 Win ?

I called Winchester customer service, they had no clue.

The .308 Win is, obviously, very popular and introduced by Winchester, it's their cartridge !

On well, just a little rant.

And the search for a bolt action continues ...

Now looking at a Kimber Longmaster Classic. Any comments ?

The Super Grades are not only traditionally long action, but are made with heavier, thicker stocks. A 308 makes more sense in the Featherweight, which they do make. I would imagine they wouldn't sell many Super Grades in 308, not worth making them.

I own both a Kimber 84M in 308, as well as the Winchester EW in 308. Both are equally accurate. As well as some Classic Winchesters in 30-06 and 300 WSM. The Kimber is almost 2 lbs lighter with the Winchester in the factory stock. Mine is 1/2 lb lighter in the McMillan stock. While I like both I think the Kimber is probably a little better rifle. Especially if you want a lightweight. While both are equally accurate, many people simply cannot shoot a light rifle as well as a heavier one.

I understand what you're saying.. pretty odd. However, one cannot offer all things/all possible permutations generally. The line must be drawn somewhere. Certain American automobile manufacturers offered so many available options it was actually ludicrous and I'm sure helped put them behind their Japanese counterparts with their more realistic options.. it also allowed them to focus more on overall quality instead of lug nut color and style etc.
Perhaps their choice was influenced by action length(s)?.. if they offered anything in that grade in the .308 family but not the .308 I'd say that that's downright stupid though.

The Super Grade is offered in 5 long actions and 2 short actions, 300 WSM and 270 WSM.

It would be understandable if only long actions. I guess short magnum actions are substantially different from "regular" short actions. ;)

Yes, as a matter of fact, magnum actions are substantially different from standard actions. It has to do with case head diameter, .473" vs .532".

While I would like to see a 308 Super Grade there is no way on God's green earth I would ever trade my Featherweight in 308 for it, that is a fantastic rifle. Now if they made a Featherweight with that Grade A+ wood I would be into that.

Not offered in 308, but this may be as close as you'll get.

This is very similar to the Jack O'Connor tribute rifle they offered a couple of years ago.

Rifle makers cannot make every version of their rifles in every chambering. They have to be able to sell quite a few of any rifle in order to make a profit. It doesn't make sense for them to stop producton of rifles they are selling faster than they can make in order to make a short run of rifles only a handfull of guys want.

This is what keeps gunsmiths who build custom rifles in business.

Ken C:

I'm not sure that the WSM rifles are short action, or medium length actions. :D I bought a Stealth some years ago, and based on Winchester's catalog, ordered a short-action M1913 rail. Hmmm. Didn't fit. So, I called and ordered a proper WSM length rail.

They also have "controlled round push feed" (if you can believe that) because the super short rounds have such a steep angle when leaving the magazine.

They're right, take the 06 and you're finished. The factory just can't offer everything as not all combinations would be popular.

What I'm really intrigued by is Winchester does not offer a model 70 in .223, figure that one.

My 300 WSM fits in a short action stock taken off a 308. For some reason Winchester made some rifles with odd spacing with the scope mounting holes. I recently ordered some Talley Lightweights for mine and I got the wrong mounts too. They make some with the holes on the rear receiver bridge for post 64 magnums with hole spacing .330" apart. The standard calibers and WSM calibers are .860" apart. They sent me the .330" mounts for a magnum chambering instead of the .860" mounts.
