I just bought a mid 80's (G1720XXX) Winchester M70 Carbine with the long action in 270Winchester! It has a 20" barrel, standard stock and weighs about 6.5#'s. I already have a Savage 116 with the 22" barrel so I'm not changing my reloading equipment. My intent is to put a Leupold 3x9x33 light weight, compact scope on it.

Interested in finding out if anyone owns or has owned one of these in 270 or another caliber concerning accuracy and stabilization with heavier bullet weights.

I'm thinking it will be a nice, light walking rifle with great power all the way out to 350yds or so even with the 120fps or so speed loss from the 20" barrel.

Should still send 130's about 3000fps, 140's about 2900, 150's about 2800 and 160's about 2700.

Thanks for your thoughts and experience. Lj

I have the same rifle in 30-06. Mine is a little louder than the longer barreled versions, but plenty accurate. I seriously doubt you will see 100 fps difference when compared to a 22" barrel. Maybe if you are comparing it to a 24" barrel.

ive got one in 250 savage. they only made 500 of them in this chambering. It shoots real well but has a 1-14 twist that does its best with 87 grain bullets. It will easily shoot moa with them. With 100s it opens up to about 1 1/2 and with 120s its a shotgun pattern. Good little gun. When i bought it new it was 275 bucks and had a 50 dollar factory rebate so i paind 225 bucks for it. Wish i would have bought 10!

I have that scope on my CZ Model 3/ Montana 99; so far so good. You might try the Talley extra-low one-piece rings (and bases), if you can find them.

I'm really liking the 3x9x33 light weight compact scope. I've got 1.75x6's, 2.5x8's and 3.5x10's on some of my other rifles and the 3x9x33 is LIGHT 8.8oz, compact at 10.4", bright and high quality as a VX-II. I really like em.

Hey Lloyd Smale, now you got me thinking I need a M70 Carbine in 250 Savage.....! Hard to find in good shape though.

I'm looking at one in 25-06, but I think a 20" barrel just STUPID short for that cartridge.
