This might be an interesting or stupid question to ask but hey what h***....

My buddy has a Remington Model 700 and an other buddy of mine has a Winchester model 70 (both in .30-06), they both swear that their rifle is better, in shooting and deer hunting. What do you guys think? If I were to buy a good, rugged deer hunting, long range rifle, what out these two; should I get?

Whichever feels best in your hands. BOTH are well known, truly loved, ultra reliable hunting rifles. It would be hard to disqualify either gun for sporting use. 30-06 is the best 'one rifle' hunting caliber in my opinion. Lots of varied loads available commercially. You can hunt anything from chipmunks to black bear.

Hahaha this argument has been floating arround since both rifles came off the lines.

But the short answer is either rifle will do you just fine from the criteria you are setting. Though recently, Wincheser 70's have take a reputation hit lately. But the new ones comming out should revitalize them. Remingtons have also taken a little hit for their prices.

But, overall both are good and you will hear a lot of arguments for one over another.

it really is personal preference. i have a few model 70's, and i have a few dozen 700's... guess that shows my preference.

Pre 64 and new model 70's i believe are favored for their mauser action. The non mauser action 70's are fine, they still give a 700 a run as far as accuracy is concerned. Both gun systems perfrom great, at this point, if i get a deal on either, i'll take it.

It is personal preference. When it gets down to it, each will do the job just as well as the other. I suggest just for curiosity sake, making a poll to see what THR members say.

My preference has always been the Winchester M70. It was my first high powered rifle in 30-06. I own and have owned several.

I worked at a gun store for several years and saw Remington Model 700's returned for repairs/defects 50-1 over the Model 70.

BTW, I have always been able to adjust the factory trigger on my Model 70's to be as good as any aftermarket trigger.

I've got both, I like both.

Both have triggers that are somewhat easy to adjust. Bogie is correct about the Remmies, more selection out there for aftermarket triggers.

Both hold an edge over the other for resell... on some rifle models. The Model 70's have a bit more collector interest.

Both actions have been used for building custom rifles.

The wood on Winchesters always seemed to be more dense than on Remingtons. More mature trees?

I have a magazine and in it, they rate the top ten rifles EVER made. There are three different experts that rate the rifles and each has his own top ten, OK, got it? The remington 700 was 1st in one of the three polls and the Winchester model 70 was 1st in the other two polls. Bryce Towsley chose the Remington as #1 and the Winchester as #3. Ron Spomer chose the Winchester as #1 and the Remington as #2. Scott Olmsted chose the Winchester as #1 and the Remington as #2. So flip a coin. lol

I have 700 Rem 3006 and 70 Win .270 ( also Rem 742/3006) since 1975.
Its a hard question and I think it comes down to personal choice.

I never had any problem with either but I would grab the Win 70 runing out the door.

The military uses the rem 700 [m24].
Because they are cheap.:p
A winchester model 70 WITHOUT the overdone extractor is pretty hard to beat, you can
A: work the trigger 10x easier than a 700
B: rebarrel easier than a remmy
C: shoot 270 rounds thru it without any backsliding...:neener:

There are many more Remington 700`s sold than the Winchester 70.

Cheap doesn`t mean anything and I wouldn`t call 700-800 bucks cheap anyway.

And just for giggles, The number one most continuously sold rifle in the U.S. is the Savage model 110.

Savage 110 '58-'59, but MAJOR redesign in '66.
Rem 700 '62
M70 I wouldn't consider pre/post/Classic actions the same model, regardless.

Savage bolt guns don't interest me, love to have a nice 99 though.

I have 4 Model 700's, so I'm bias.
The Winny has more pieces in the bolt assembly, I feel its less smooth compared to the 700. The Rem is a prettier rifle!

I think that 700's have a smoother action. The 70's usually look a little nice though...when they aren't that synthetic stock version with the bubbles. Overall I like the 700 more though.
