I am applying for my LTC next tuesday And here is the letter that the chief is asking me to write on why I want A LTC. Please let me know what you think. If you think I need something extra let me know. or if something is to lame that I shouldnt add.

Dear Chief Souza,
I have been a resident of Fall River for six years and I recently purched a home in the south end. The neighborhood rectently had a series of breakins, auto thefts, and obvious drug activity giving me a feeling of uneasyness at home. I had a FID card from the town of Acushnetat the age of 18 without incident. the law changed and my permit expired. I am requesting a class A LTC to purchase, posess and transport a handgun large capacity rifle or large capacity shotrun for self protection, injury to myself and my property. I am also looking into taking the N.R.A Marksmanship handgun qualification to further my skill's in firearm safty as well as gathering the necassary information on becoming a firearm safety instructor promoting proper firearm safety and promoting the shooting sports. Thank you.

sincerely
Robert M

Well what do you think? Do I have a shot? (yes you can make fun of my spelling.) I will fine tune before I send it to the chief.:)

Not your spelling but the line:
"I am requesting a class A LTC to purchase, posess and transport a handgun large capacity rifle or large capacity shotrun for self protection, injury to myself and my property."

Makes it sound as if you mean to hurt yourself or your property. I think you mean:
"I am requesting a class A LTC to purchase, posess and transport a handgun, large capacity rifle, or large capacity shotrun for self-protection from injury to myself or my property."

Otherwise I see nothing wrong; however, I have no idea what the police are really looking for in a letter like this as I have never written one. But it looks like you make a good case to me.

"I am requesting a class A LTC to purchase, posess and transport a handgun large capacity rifle or large capacity shotrun for self protection, injury to myself and my property."

large capacity shotrun? (typo)

Brother in arms

I'd also add:"as you're well aware of,the police are merely respondents to an incident that has already occurred.I feel I am safer if I have the opportunity to defend myself while the incident is occurring, with the intention of preventing said incident from occurring in the first place" or something similar to that.Just my opinion...

Dear Chief Souza,

I have been a resident of Fall River for six years and recently purchased a home in the South End. The neighborhood has recently had a series of breakins, auto thefts, and obvious drug activity giving me a feeling of uneasiness at home.

I was granted a FID card from the town of Acushnetat the age of 18 and held it for ??? years/months without incident. The law changed and my permit expired. I am requesting a Class A LTC to purchase, posess and transport a handgun, large capacity rifle or large capacity shotgun for home and self defense**. I am also looking into entering the N.R.A Marksmanship Handgun Qualification Program to further my skills in firearm safety as well as to gather the necessary information to become a certified firearm safety instructor, promoting proper firearm safety and the shooting sports.

Thank you.

Sincerely,

Robert M
I deleted the second 'I' in the first sentence and the second 'promoting' in the last sentence.

**I'm concerned that you mention use of a firearm to protect property. I don't know if that's legal in your area, and even if it is, I'm not sure I would tell the police that's one of your purposes. I would definitely say "for home and self defense" rather than "self protection, injury to myself and my property".

I would definitely NOT make any comments about police response, etc. A rank & file officer might sympathize, but a Police Chief is often a politician and would take that as criticism rather than as a rationale.

At the very least I think you should complete the N.R.A Marksmanship Handgun Qualification Program, or similar program, PRIOR to sending off this letter.

By doing so will show that you have already taken steps to prepare yourself for this "great responsibility" and that they are not just stating empty words to get something you want.

Thanks

Tim G.

I would love to but I dont have any firearms to practice with. But I know what your saying. Please keep the info comming. the more help I get will help me fine tune my letter to my chief of police. thanks evervone.:D this site is great.

Anyone else offended by the idea that it is necessary to appeal in writing to a higher authority just to defend your own home, and regain a limited form of your 2nd Amendment rights?

+1! That's too bad. I didn't have to say why when I got mine. It's offensive enough you have to get their permission without having to convince them to grant you your inalienable right.
Could you just use the common ATF form 4 comment of "All lawful purposes"? Would make for a shorter letter :)

Dear Chief Souza,

I am requesting a Class A LTC to purchase, posess and transport a handgun, rifle and, shotgun for home and self defense. [Moved sentence. Removed 'large capacity'. Consider changing 'home and self defense' to 'all legal purposes'.]

I have been a resident of Fall River for six years and recently purchased a home in the South End. There has been an increase in criminal activity in the neighborhood lately that has me concerned. [Sentence rewriten to remove details. If the Chief doesn't know what is going on in the South End, you're up a creek anyway.]

From the age of eighteen I held an FID card issued by the town of Acushnetat and held it for ??? years/months without incident. [Rewritten.]

I am also looking into entering the N.R.A Marksmanship Handgun Qualification Program to further my skills in firearm safety as well as to gather the necessary information to become a certified firearm safety instructor, promoting proper firearm safety and the shooting sports. [Consider removing this sentence. To a point, the less you say the less they can object to. And it doesn't address why you should be granted a Class A LTC now, it speaks to the future.]

Let us know if we messed you up.

More and more every day!

In this respect, police chiefs in Mass have far too much power. The letter that BlindnDead needs to write is not a state requirement. At their discretion, local chiefs can place additional requirements on applicants for a LTC.

In one town, the chief required letters of recommendation from 3 residents, one of whom had to be a LEO, judge, or lawyer. In other towns, chiefs will not issue unrestricted permits.

The really sad part is that until quite recently, there was no appeals process. Your local chief could simply refuse to issue you a permit for any arbitrary reason, and there was nothing you could do about it. The appeals process is very new and is just now in the process of getting off the ground. I know of one THR member that's currently embroiled in an appeal because he was refused due to a personal problem he had with a local LEO. Maybe he'll read this and weigh in.

In the town I grew up in as a kid, for a long time the chief would not issue ANY permits (except to his friends and relatives). That town was Lexington, MA. No history of residents bearing arms there, huh?

Fortunately, now I live in the "free" part of the state (west of 495). On my application, under "Reason for applying" all I had to write were three words:

All Lawful Purposes

We have a good chief. He's also an elected chief - not appointed for life.

I can't believe you have to go through all that. In my state the only thing you have to apply for is a CWP. As long as there is no reason you can not own a firearm you can have as many as you like. My only problem is the wife won't let me buy anymore..... Why did I ever let her take over the budget... Oh wait.. That was because I am addicted to buying firearms....

I am now down to my 1911, a Tok in 7.62x25, a FAL .308 German mauser in 7mm and 2 AK47s Can we start a (Send your spare 1911 parts to Helstrm) fund? Then I can build another one........ I am dieing to have another 1911...:what:

yea that 2

This is my last step. they made me get 3 letters of recommendation from non residents. They sound better than the letter I wrote for myself. this has not been a easy process. And when it is all said and done they can refuse to give me a LTC and tell me to go pound sand. and I have never got into any trouble in my life..

Good luck sir. Let us know what happens!!

Guess I'm lucky-
Where I live is a shall issue state, and the local police chief, county sherriff, and the state attorney general will all sign off on class III stuff.

letter

I am so sorry for you living in such a pitiful place. Come on down to Texas, walk in to Academy and walk out with your pistol, rifle, and shotgun all at once!!!! No letter needed. Plus, the accents are not so hard on the ears down here. You would be about as far away from Teddie as possible.

Good luck to you! Wish me luck too, I'm trying to get mine upgraded to ALP from Sporting / Target
