I think I want a rifle chambered in .338 mag of some sort. I was thinking about .338win mag but have also been intrigued by .338 lapua mag. And the .338 rum. Any one have any experience with these calibers? Any input appreciated

The recoil on the .338 LM can be quite significant. Though the accuracy at long range is outstanding. Not really sure if you could hunt with it though.

No experience with .338 WM though.

I've thought over this same question a lot this past year.

I'm leaning toward the .338RUM for these reasons:

1. Twin brother to the LM. Ballistically the edge goes to the LM, but by a very small amount.

2.Cheaper to reload than the LM.

3. Unbelted, therefore easier to reload.

I have a Remington BDL, stainless in a synthetic stock in .338 win mag. Good all weather rifle and light enough to carry all day. Wouldn't want to shoot it all day as the recoil, even with the nive factory recoil pad, is quite stout. But then, .338 is not a plinking round. Think I paid about $750 for it last year.

Don't forget the .340 Weatherby. Readily available, and has plenty of muscle. I have a buddy that has a Sako that he loves. Hard hitting, on both ends.

Why complicate your life? Go with the standard .338 Winchester, and if it fails you in the field, report back to us with details. Have fyn...Essex

I have the .338 Win Mag in a 700 BDL. I paid $455 for it new a few years back. It seems to be a very accurate. The recoil is stiff, but not severe. It has worked on everything I needed it to. The Win Mag has been around for years. It will be for years to come, too.

338LM rifles can be very "shootable", but they need to have a great muzzle brake and some mass. Even with a "best in class" brake, I would not recommend under 11-13#. The 338RUM is cheaper to shoot than the 338LM, but only slightly (approx 15% based on relative brass cost amortized over 10 firings).

since no one has even brought it up yet...what about the 338-06?

Bit more powder than a 338 Federal...less thump than a 338 WM...and from what I have heard, a fine all-around cartridge to have fun with.
