With all the Mosin talk lately...

I just spent $199 + tax at my LGS :(

Luckily it is in excellent shape with a bore that looks brand new.
Given that I would have had to pay shipping and transfer fee, I'm not too upset about what I paid, after all I got to hand pick it myself.

I paid 130 plus taxes at my local shop, I dont think it has ever been fired. I m sure it has being produced in '39 but still has no sign of wear anywhere

At least you got to hand pick! I didn't and after transfer it'll be 159.00 otd.

Exactly. I was disappointed when I saw the price tags, there were eight in the store and all of them were $199, but I was set on a MN.
When I slid the bolt out and shined my flashlight through the bore, I felt better.
The way I see it, I paid a little extra, but I got one with a perfect bore and decent wood.
Buy quality, cry once and all that.

Right now, I'm 'bubba'ing' it by applying a hand rubbed linseed oil finish to the stock.
The shellac looked ok, but when I slid the barrel bands off, the shellac peeled off with them.
Turns out there were two layers of shellac, and I think the outer one was applied by the importers. Both layers chipped and peeled easily with my thumbnail so I scraped it all off, dyed the wood, and have been applying linseed oil every day since.

It looks beautiful with the oil finish, far better than the shellac.

I guess I have destroyed the 'collector value' :)D) but since it's a definite keeper I'm not too concerned.

These guns were in storage for WWIII, refurrebishment programs from 1945 -1955, just l;ike ever other country that won WWII. Find an M-1 Garand all matching #'s and unissued and its most likely stole from the military

Cosmoline protected the metal, varnish protected the wood, both were removed apon issue, gas or kerosen for the cosmoline, alcohol for the shellac.......... and oil to the wood and oil to the metal were fairly common presevatives for the issed rifles.

Some collectors want them shellac'd and cosmo'd, some want only the gooy cosmo off, some want it as issued, your rifle , your choice.

Mosins are a bargin, even now, and after 2 world wars and military give aways by the Soviets and use afterwards, theres about 10-15% of them left , and only a fraction is here in the US.
