Gunsight Scout Rifle .308/7.62x51

So how do I scope it? (Biggest question...) I hit 200 yard gong, but not reliably...has Ruger rings.

Always kinda wanted a .308...back of my mind...would trade it for an .375 H&H :)! Probably a couple of others...

Ideas? Advice?

I've scoped my GSR three different ways. A fixed 4x in the scout position, a 1.5-5x20 and a 2-7x32 on the receiver in the Ruger rings. The GSR comes with #4 and #5 height rings and will work for scopes with objectives larger than 32mm. In my case with the smaller scopes, I bought a #3 Ruger ring to use with the #4 to lower the scope height. The bolt handle still clears those two scopes.

My preference is for the smaller receiver mounted scopes as it is easier for me to shoot farther away with them.

IMO, a long eye relief scope (scout style) is the way to go. The 2x7 Burris adds some long(er) range versatility, the trade off being a little more weight.
 
I'd take the peep off and mount a scope conventionally. If you want to keep ranges under 200-300 yards a 1-4X20 scope mounted conventionally is faster for close fast shooting than irons and 4X is enough magnification for at least 200 yards. A more powerful scope could be used for more precision or longer ranges, but would but be a handicap up close and fast.

The only advantage forward mounted scopes offer is faster loading with stripper clips. Not gonna be used with this rifle anyway. No reason to handicap yourself with those scopes.

Yes, thanks also for the specific tips on the glass. This won't ever be a long range gun (I have a Sako 6.5 Swede for that!).

Skip the scout scope business and just mount a conventional scope.

I just tossed on a 2x7-32 Nikon Prostaff, and it's worked great.

Congratulations! The more you shoot it, the more you'll like it.
 
NO,to the LIR scope !

I mounted a LIR scope [ 2X ] on mine and this year had to pass up THE biggest buck I ever saw thanks to the lousy picture I had with the LIR at 90 yards.

I just received a conventional rail for the RSR and will mount a CONVENTIONAL SCOPE asap.

I bought a NightForce 2.5 X 10 power and look SO forward to using that for the hunt next year.

I have a Ruger American that has a conventional scope,took that out later in the day and KNEW that the shot I had to pass --- would have been a piece of cake with the other scope.

Just my 00.02 cents and my NOT so humble opinion.
 
I just purchased a 18" stainless .308 Ruger GSR, and before I even received the rifle, had the XS rail shipped to me. LIR scopes don't do it for me, it just SEEMS (I don't have much experience with LIR scopes) one is giving up a lot of precision sighting using one. The previous poster talking about passing on a 90 yard shot on a game animal is what I figured my results would be with a LIR scope as well. However, I went into buying the GSR because of its total features and the fact that XS Systems makes a nice rail that includes a peep sight so that I don't have to give up back up irons while getting a standard scope, I put a Leupold 3.5-10x40mm VX-3 on it. So far I love my GSR, it has a lot going for it. I know that I don't follow the Jeff Cooper Scout loyalists vision of the GSR but oh well.

It seems like some people really can utilize a LIR scope, I don't think that I would ever be one of those. The only different type of optic I would consider would be a forward mounted red dot, I can see that having potential for fast target acquisition out to 200 yards or so on larger targets.

Not what I expected, but I have an old Burris 3-9x40 scope I think I will use since it costs me nothing. Taking off the peep makes that possible. Let you know how it shoots next time I go to the hills...

Greg, congrats!

Which particular configuration RGS did you get? Does it have the composite stock? (...and now that it's offered in two different chamberings, which?)

My appreciation for my two-year-old, laminate-stock, blued "16.5-inch" (actually measures 17.25 from breech to muzzle with the flash hider removed) .308 grows every time I handle it at home or shoot it at the range or in the desert. One day I hope to hunt with it.

I would encourage you to dial in the ghost ring irons before you might scope it conventionally. Those factory sights are superb.

200Apples, I guess the anonymous THR poster was wrong as it's 2016 and people are still buying the Ruger GSR. You must really like yours for that to take up your signature line.

Do you reload for yours? If so how well does it shoot for you?
 
I too have a GSR. I have the composite stock model. I put a Vortex 3x9 on it with an XS rail and quick remove rings. I like it.

Congratulations on getting a GSR, especially one for free.

I reload for mine. I have a 150 grain and 168 grain load. Shoot both very acceptable.
 
if you decide to upgrade the scope, I would say choose a budget you want to stick to. then choose what power(variable/fixed), features, needs and find some place to put your eyes on some scopes.
Pick which one fits what you want. I don't know what you like.
 
I put a Leupold LER scope on mine so as to keep the factory sights. It is in Warne QD rings that return to zero each and every time. it is over the Colonel's weight requirement, especially with a Rhodesian sling and a butt cuff with extra ammo, but it meets my needs.
 
Congratulations! Be careful removing the rail. The screws are real small, and I have been told easy to snap.

Congrats on the new rifle!
It's a very versatile little thing. Mine wears a Leupold 2.5x Scout Scope and I'm very happy with it out to 200 yards for deer hunting. If I wanted a "Truck Gun" I'd just take off the rail and use the issue peep sights. Feels like an M1 Carbine, hits like an M14. Mine gets sub 1" groups off the bench at 100 yards. A conventionally mounted scope would probably give outstanding results at extended range.
My biggest suggestions are to ditch the 10 round magazine, get some of the Ruger 5 rounder poly mags and put a "Ching Sling" on it. You'll have to install a third swivel stud but properly used the Ching supports the rifle like a bipod for supported shooting.

It is far from a useless concept. I "got it" from Day One, as did others, obviously. I do not reload, yet, so I using various off-the-shelf 150 gr and 168 gr loads to great result. I cannot yet shoot up to this rifle.



Ex-Agoradzo, look also at the Andy's Leather "Rhodesian" shooting sling. It provides a loop just like the CW or Ching, but does not require the installation of the third swivel.

I've since added a one-chamber brake (because I had it, and because it looks like a brake from a battle tank) and have acquired two more Ruger 5-round mags. I've put the rail back on to again install my Leupold 2.5 fixed Scout scope. Meanwhile, the ghost ring irons are superb!

My son and I recently went shooting in the desert but with a serious cross wind... to 50 yds it was as if we were shooting on a calm day. Effortless hits! Those soup cans never knew what hit 'em. Hee.

I took mine out a couple of weeks ago and could easily hit a 12" steel gong at 200 yards. My impacts after 20 rounds were no more that 6" in diameter shooting unsupported with a Leupold scout scope. I have some Ruger 5 round mags, but have come to love the Magpul 6 rounders; they are far superior. I would shot the heck out of it and have fun; they are great rifles!
 
Here's the photo. This will be my first attempt to glass it. I don't have an LER scope so that will have to wait for cash. EDIT: didn't work, will try again...

Yes that is cheap Walmart ammo...what can I say...If I make this my son's hunting gun, I'll have to buy copper ammo and resight it.
