"In many states, the permit requirements are so minimal that some people get permits to carry concealed weapons despite criminal convictions for violent or drug-related misdemeanors or domestic violence restraining orders. The applicant does not have to show any need for carrying a hidden handgun and law enforcement has no discretion to deny permits even if they think public safety may be endangered, absent a prohibiting offense. Some of these states do not even require safety training and force police to issue permits to people as young as 18. The 35 states are: Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, and Wyoming."
I love how they mish-mash points together to expand the scope of the states they accuse of "irresponsibel"permitting. Here in Tennessee the only "criminal conviction" that won't block you getting a permit is a misdemeanor violence charge. Gotta be 21 for handgun and permit, safety training required, no spousal violence, no restraining orders, no drugs. How many of the states on the list are just like TN?
It seems that they took every restriction that any state (or group of states) has for issuing a permit and essentially said, "If they don't have all these restrictions then we can lump them all together."
