Would a guitar case be considered a gun case?

I have a Marlin 99 with no case. My trigger finger has been itching to take her to my local range and play with her. The only problem is that I don't have a case for it and range rules won't let you openly brandish a firearm until you are on the line. As an avid guitar player I have a soft case for one of my guitars. Do you think they would allow such a case to get my rifle into the range?

To help assess my situation, I live in the People's Republik of California next to a Marine Corps Base.

**EDIT** I've called the range. They said as long as it's in A case, then it will work. Your answers were good and the question has been answered...Mods, there's no need to keep this thread open. Thanks.

I have no idea what the requirements in CA are, but to me, a case is a case. Although, if you are really concerned, you can pick up any number of soft or hard cases for less than $20.

bran·dish Pronunciation (brndsh)
tr.v. bran·dished, bran·dish·ing, bran·dish·es
1. To wave or flourish (a weapon, for example) menacingly.
2. To display ostentatiously.

Put the bolt in you pocket, and a flag in the breech. Then carry straight to the range and set it in the rack. That is transporting not brandishing.

There are quite a few cheap plastic cases that can be had for under twenty bucks. There are also foam gun socks that are sold at wal mart and they are even cheaper.

I think it should work just fine. I play bass for a living, and I often smuggle one or sometimes two long guns in my gig bags to and from the car...keeps my neighbors from knowing that I own guns...now they'll just try and rob me for my axes. :p

I can't pull the bolt out without totally disassembling the gun. And forgive my wording...I meant to say openly carry.

I have a softside electric guitar case that I made a "fake" strat bottom for (think hollow 1/4" plywood replica of the bottom 4" of a Fender Strat)

My scoped SKS, with detatchable 30 round banana mag fits in that case, with the buttstock nicely nestled into that fake strat base (do hold the thing in place and make the weight of the gun hang the same way as a guitar)

it works quite well...

Guitar case is fine. It may look a little odd, but it will work.

Soft guncases can be had at Wal-Mart for only $10-15 bucks. You don't have to spend big bucks to get a decent gun case.

It should not be a problem. I used to see a guy at the range who would carry his M1A around in an vintage tweed guitar case, I loved it.
Perhaps I should get a gun case for my guitar...

Folding stocked Ak fits in a Tennis racket case.

You need a 20 rounder insted of a 30 unless you want it to fit REALLY tight...

you could probably carry it in a guitar case, but if you get stopped by one of those cops wearing an Alqueda ski mask and a nazi hair cut, you may be detained for a while.

I bought a very nice rifle back with a shoulder strap and an ammo pouch for $20 at my local gun shop. I got a nice carbine bag for my daughter at a different gun shop for $30. You don't have to spend a lot to get something decent to carry your rifle in.

Hmm... Brady and McCarthy are probably watching and planning on banning intrument cases since they are scary, black, and obviously the cause of 100 murders a day in Duluth. My local shop has violin-sized/shaped cases for use with the Thompsons they carry. Or anything else that will fit.

I often carry my 870 or my Bushmaster in my Strat hard case along with my G23 in the "pick compartment". Nobody seems to notice.

So go get a four or five dollar (maximum expense) Gun Sleeve. and put the gun in it. I put my ammo in a seperate and lockable container, (I use a small plano tackle box) with the key for same on the ring in the ignition key. Or keep weapon and ammo in seperate compartments of the vehicle ie trunk and back seat.

A guiter case is the ultimate in urban camo...I carry a shotgun around in a guitar case quite frequently...

Several guys I shoot with carry in guitar cases, tennis racket bags, and baseball equipment bags. They hold all manner of long guns discreetly and securely. I have an oversize cheapo duffel that I tote my AR or 9mm carbine in so the neighbors are none the wiser.
