On another forum, a guy posted that he replaces the recoil spring on his 9mm with a much stronger one so that the slide won't fully cycle. Then he loads with two rounds of +p and one regular. He said that when he pulls the trigger, he gets a three round burst.
Is this reasonable?

He's lying, probably. If the gun cycles far enough to eject the spent case and load the next, it will trip the disconnector and interrupt the hammer or striker from falling until you reset the trigger.

If -- by chance -- he's not lying, then he's causing a dangerous malfunction. As we have seen (google "David R. Olofson"), dangerous malfunctions that cause more than one projectile to be fired with each pull of the trigger can land you a federal conviction for making/possessing an unlicensed Title II firearm.

Plus, he's admitted doing so on purpose on a public forum.

He's an idiot on many levels. But don't worry, it is unlikely he's even telling the truth. A quality firearm should not be easily forced to malfunction like that.

I can't see how it would work. At least not reliably. But, who knows stranger things have happened.

I can say regardless of my feelings of the constitutionality of the laws involved I can't see how it would be legal.

Nearly all handguns use a floating firing pin; it is no longer than the channel. They need the inertia of a hammer strike to hit the firing pin with enough authority for a discharge. a hammer that follows is pretty much gauranteed to cause light strikes at best.

1911's without firing pin blocks have been known to double or empty magazines on account of weak or broken FP springs, but it's incredibly uncommon. I had one discharge when I dropped slide on a chambered cartridge, as the added resistance of the extractor snapping over the case rim gave the FP enough momentum to set of the primer.

Not buying it. IF true, three-round bursts are still automatic fire. That could not possibly be legal.

Total BS!!

No semi-auto pistol will fire three round bursts just by replacing the recoil spring.

If the slide comes back far enough to pick up the next round in the magazine, the disconnector has to be reset by releasing the trigger and pulling it again.

Try it with an empty gun.
Dry fire the gun - hold the trigger back - cycle the slide manually.

Unless it is totally broke, you can only get one trigger pull / firing pin fall per slide cycle.

If it is broke, the hammer will follow the slide down, or in the case of a striker fired gun, nothing at all will happen.

Call the guy out. He is a lier.

Then shoot those pop cans!!

For SD purposes
mindset is way better than "burst" option.
