I would encourage anyone thinking of buying a Hi Point to continue to save, and buy something that will stand the test of time... That said, if you need a firearm FAST and all you can afford is a Hi Point... well then thats a no-brainer!
What "test of time" are you referring to? Are you saying that hi-points have a shelf life? Do they only last "X" years, and then they no longer work? Is it "Y" amount of rounds? Even if "Y" amount of rounds was true, their warranty is such that they'd simply rebuild or replace it for you.
For all you folks out there thinking of getting a hi-point, consider the hi-point vs a glock, HK, Sig, or Springfield Armory; the same as a "Kia Rio" vs an Audi, Mazda, Porsche, Cadillac, or Volvo. The Kia is $11,000 and it's no frills. No cruise, no plush interior, no floor mats, etc... BUT it comes with a 10 year 100,000 mile warranty. The Audi, Mazda, Porsche, Cadillac, and Volvo are $25,000 - $100,000 and it's got all the frills and features and a lot of speed. But they come with a 5 year 50,000 mile warranty. Oh, except in this analogy, the Hi-Point is 100% American made.
Point is: Do you need a decked out gun? Do you need a gun that will cost you $400-$1000? Are you looking for a gun as a "Family Heirloom" to pass down to your children? Or, are you looking for a gun to have fun with at the range? Looking for a gun to defend you if someone tries to do harm to you or your family. Looking for a gun that you don't have to spend most of a weekly paycheck on? That Kia will get you to work, school, grocery shopping, and some nice weekend getaways. Your Hi-Point will defend you, protect you, and provide you with a lot of fun.
Mind you, I am totally talking about NEED here. If you WANT a Porsch, then buy one. I did, and I loved it. If you WANT a Sig, S&W, Kimber, Springfield, CZ, Dan Wesson, Colt, Para, or H&K; then go ahead I buy that. I have, or have had, every one of those. Nothing wrong with that. But even though I have/had those, I found a place for the Hi-Point. I had a porsche, still have a restored 66 mustang, and a vette; but I still have a place for a Ford Focus. The problem is, too many people here telling you what you "NEED". They have absolutely no idea what you need. Only you know that. If you NEED a concealed weapon to hide in your purse or in a pair of pants, then the Hi-Point is not for you. If you NEED a gun with 15+ rounds because you don't trust your shooting abilities, then the hi-Point isn't for you. If you NEED a gun for hunting, or competitive shooting, or similar sport; then the Hi-Point isn't for you. If you have the money, and you're mixing NEED with WANT, then the hi-point probably isn't for you. But if you NEED a gun that doesn't cost much, is dependable, is reliable, has the GREATEST CUSTOMER SERVICE AND WARRANTY of ALL other manufacturers, and it's primary purpose is to punch paper for fun and to protect you; then the Hi-Point might just be for you.
But MOST of all, it has to be the gun that FITS YOU!!!! If you're honest with yourself, and not what others here say, you might find that none of the guns people are recommending here are right for you. What might FIT YOU the best, could be a 6 round revolver. Maybe it's a 32acp walther. Maybe because of your size and stature, a Ruger LCP is the perfect gun for you. And it's NOT because they cost more or because it isn't a hi-point, but because it fits you right.
