Guys even though this is my first post I am not a troll. Thought I
would mention this since I see a lot of flame wars concerning
Hi Point threads in various gun forums.

The thing is I don't have a lot of money to spend on a firearm.
I know people will say buy used but, I really want something that
no one else had before me if that makes sense. Plus I don't know
enough about firearms to know if I was buying something in good
condition or not.

I have shot a friends c9 before and was fairly accurate with it.
The main reason for me is the price and I want a new gun I can
afford. Been thinking about a shotgun too since I can get one
fairly cheap as well, but I would prefer a handgun.

Question for you Hi Point owners out there. Which one would
you recommend I get? 9mm, .40 or .45 Yes, I know the ammo
is more expensive with the .40 and .45 but, I want the best.
I probably won't be taking it that often to the range.

Thanks for your help

afford.

Then get ammo you can better afford to shoot. Modern 9mm high quality hollow points are darn effective.

I had a c9 before and was a nice gun for $150 until i could afford something different. little more compact which looks better to me personally than the other giant 40s and 45s.

Although I own and love the Hi Point 995, I never wanted one of their pistols.

I've been having a change of heart as of late. I am seriously considering a couple of the .45's.

all i can say is , ive been there and bought what i could afford , but with that said when i bought a less expensive gun and less quality , i ended up being very disappointed with it , until i got a better quality gun , just something to keep in mind , im not judging , just sharing my experience goos luck with your choice , happy shootin!!

Nothing wrong with modern 9mm for your use. It'll be cheaper to learn on and still be available a long time from now. That will be important because that HP might last long enough for you to give it as a first shooter to your son.

Ignore the detractors...good on ye for doing what you can in using your rights.

Not trying to sway you away from a Hi-Point or anything. I have owned six of them, and none of them functioned correctly, but I never paid over $50 for them.

IME ,I have sold myself short several times by buying cheap in order to have now. Some things are the exception..... IMO, firearms are not. Just my opinion, that I am sure I am not alone in sharing.

With all that, I would recomend you save your money. Buy a pistol that is of good quality that fits all of your needs adequately. There are several makes and models out there that can be had in the sub $300/$400 range, but they are used. I know you said that you do not want a used gun, but I feel that you are overlooking a very cost effective market of quality firearms.

Examples:

1.) Surplus Sig P6(9mm). I use to own one of these pistols. The exterior was rough, but the internals were spotless. Very accurate and reliable. Small and light enough to carry well.
I wish I still had it. Proven Platform.

2.) Makarov and variants(9x18). Accurate and reliable. Plenty of cheap surplus 9x18 ammo available.Proven Platform.

3.) CZ-82(9x18). See Makarov.

4.) 2nd Generation Glock 17(9mm).I found one in a pawn shop for $325. I prob could have talked them down to $300. I have seen several in the $350-$400 area. Proven Platform.

Those are a few that I am familiar with. There are still deals to be had, you just have to be patient and keep searching/digging.

Either way you go, I wish you luck with your choice.

I've got a Hi-Point 9 mm. IMHO, that's the one to get. The 380 is the same size but the ammo is more expensive, harder to find lately, and lower powered. In a pinch the 9mm could be used for concealed carry. The 40/45 are a lot bigger physically. They might be good to have, but I'd get the 9mm first.

Thanks all for the help.

Sapper771,

I was thinking about what you said concerning the Makarov's. I studied
a little about them on the web. To be honest if I could find one at good
price I would go for that.

It doesn't have to be a Hi Point, just something in-expensive. If I have
to buy used for now so, be it. I do want something of quality.

The HP comes with a lifetime warranty and I am told they have quick turnaround time.

Used or Milsurp carries no such warranty...they are at your risk.

Looks like everyone is saying 9mm for the HP. The local shop
has the 9mm and .40 for the same price. Just a little more for
the .45

This gun is for home defense and range plinking so, I won't
be carrying it.

Since the .40 ammo is just a few dollars more a box? Everyone
still think I should get the 9mm?

Get a cheap .22 if you are going to mostly use it for plinking. I know you want "new" but you can get a gently used Ruger .22 pretty cheap and you will probably be really happy with it.

My only experience with hi point has been getting my god son a 995 carbine, and shooting hundreds and hundreds of rounds of all kinds through it without a hiccup.

Great little weapon for under $200.

As a defensive arm a 995 would be an outstanding choice. Firing full power +P+ 9mm ammo (which the gun is expressly rated to fire) out of that carbine barrel, it would be eons more effective than any .22 rifle or for that matter the overwhelming majority of pistols, regardless of the price point of said pistols.

Almost no recoil at all, and at real world civvie gunfight ranges it has 1 hole accuracy in my 11yo god sons hands.

And it's very compact as well...

I'm sure any of them will serve your purpose well, much better than some "think" ;)

I say hold them all at the shop and take home THE one that feels best to you! No one else is buying your gun so what they "would choose" is of no importance IMO The great thing about Hi Points is the life time warranty And the very reasonable price, so over time you can own all three calibers of Hi Points!

I'll throw mt .02 in.
Look at a Kel-Tec P11 (9mm). They can be had new for around $250 +/-, very easy to conceal, lifetime warranty, reliable, American made and a LOT better looking than a Hi Point.
You could also find a used P11 for probably around $175 if you look.....and you would more than likely still have the warranty, even though it's supposed to be to the original owner I have never heard of Kel-Tec asking for proof.

if you are set on teh hi-point, yeah I would get the 9mm. The .40 is a few dollars more a box, but that adds up over the years.

anyway, can you afford to pay 70$ more for a gun? The CZ-82, from what I've heard, is a great defensive pistol, and ammo for it is very very cheap, much cheaper than 9mm.

I agree with this more than anything in the thread. The C9 would be a fine weapon for $130 or so, and if there are ANY issues, the company does stand behind their products.

But for about 100 more (after shipping and transfer fees), you can get a CZ in 9x18, which is not only a fine shooter, but easier to carry (slimmer) and becomes a chic and collectible weapon when "dressed" up:

:)

For me, the 9x18 cartridge isn't any cheaper, but isn't more expensive; both go for around $10-$13 a box depending on there I find it

I'll tell ya, I have the C9 and the JHP .45 from Hi Point. I've shot the piss out of them and they haven't missed a beat. I prefer the .45 just from a power standpoint, but the c9 is carryable. So, for home defense, I'd choose the .45, for an all around pistol, the c9 fits the bill. Great guns for the money and one heck of a warranty if you need it, I know I haven't. With that said, my Glock 27 or Ruger LCR 5 shot will continue to be my daily carry over the Hi Point, they are definately a higher quality pistol.

I would take a single TT-33/M57 or CZ-82 over 3 Hi Points handguns of various calibers and I'm being absolutely serious.

The thing is I don't have a lot of money to spend on a firearm.

Then you probably don't have a lot of money spend on ammunition either. It seems 9mm would be the obvious choice.

Hi points are like any other gun, there are good ones and bad ones. There just happen to be a few more bad ones for a given amount of hi points. When you buy it, buy a few hundred bullets and go on and pop them all off to see if it works. I've seen hi points that never jam at all and i've seen ones that jam every few mags. You need to know which one yours is.

I have both the Hi-Point C9 and the .45ACP HP. Both are great shooters. I would recommend the C9 in your case. It is lighter and if you were ever so inclined to carry concealed, it would fit the bill. Hi Point's life time warranty and their superb customer service is a good plus also.

I second the TT-33/ Yugo M-57. It is on sale at $189. The You can buy 1200 rounds for $120. It is my favorite carry weapon. When you get some more $$ get a 9mm barrel and barrel bushing (cost about $50) and you can shoot 9mm Luger through the pistol. And you can modify another 9mm barrel and shoot 38 Super or 9x23 Winchester.
