That U-Haul box trailer will have fully-compressed suspension and the density of a travelling neutron star. God help whatever gets in its way.

Duke of Doubt, when I read your post I laughed so hard my eyes watered!! Seems your "moving" comment in your "Pre-owned Stockpile" topic has gotten more notice than your original question!

I moved from S.E. Georgia (10mi. N. of Jacksonville, Fla.) to Denver (1,860mi.) for a job back in '02. I needed a 26 ft. box truck & towed a auto-transport trailer behind that for my '95 Dodge 4x4.

I filled that box truck 7 ft. deep - front to back, including: a gun cabinet loaded w/ 36 firearms, 13 FULL ammo cans (3-big 12x16x23 & 10-small 6x8x12 = 17,000+ rds.), Roll-around reloading bench w/ Rockchkr., 50+ lead ingots @ 7 lbs. ea., 60gal. stand-up air compressor, top/bottom roll-around toolbox, mig welder, Oxy/Acetalyne cutting rig, $12,000 dragster engine, etc., etc. Lotsa heavy stuff!!

Job ended 1 yr. later, so I moved back to Ga. from Denver - Same picture going back.

Flash forward 3.5 yrs., 1 divorce, & yep...... back to Denver! Only this time I was VERY limited by funds due to the divorce, & could only afford a 6x12 box trailer & fuel for the Dodge.

This time, it took me two+ weeks of loading/unloading/loading w/a tape measure, having to check EVERY BOX for size, so I could get as much of my "stuff" loaded as I could!

Once loaded, I drove the whole way to Denver, using back country (2-lane) highways. I wasn't going to risk getting hit by a semi due to my speed being too slow!

You could see the suspension on that trailer was bottomed out, & if I went even 01mph over 45, the trailer would "wag" the truck! If I had drilled a hole in the roof of that trailer, I wouldn't have been able to pour a jar of BB's into it!!

Between the ammunition, raw gunpowder (roughly 35lbs.), partswasher w/35 gal. solvent tank, Oxy/Acet. bottles, Arg./CO2 gas for mig., ..... Oh, I almost forgot about the 3ea. 5-gallon gas cans (full) in the bed of my truck! Talk about a V.B.I.E.D.!!!:what: <-me B4}{me after-> :fire:

I look back & think was I dumb? Yeah. Was I crazy? DEFINATLY!! It was what it was.... I had to do what I had to @ the time.

Will I do it again? Nope, I'm "home" here in Co., & ain't movin' ever again :D:D:D !!!

(3 trips @ 1,860mi. totaling 5,580 miles!)

What I'm saying w/ my story is: Most folks (we know who we are!!) will probably leave anything & everything of value (incl. the kitchen sink) behind.....

OUR GUNS & AMMO ARE HERE TO STAY..... at least until the next move!!

Would You sell your stockpile before a move? YES or NO

man you're nuts! you were definetly a motorized bomb...
but to answer your question:
if i were to move i would not sell my stockpile, i don't care if i had 50,000 rounds of ammunition at the time of my move. I'd get so much satisfaction taking that much ammo inside my new house (hopefully the neighbors would see me taking it in...:D)
guns, they stay too... if i run low on room i'll leave the books, furniture, and the gf

Only if I was permantly moving to prison. It will come with me everywhere else.

You need a bigger trailer. I moved a couple of months ago with a 20' trailer with a capacity of 8000 pounds. The Army moved all my stuff (minus the guns, ammo and motorcycles) and the rest all fit neatly on the trailer. The only real issue was the one overnight stop. But there are ways around that if you plan ahead.

No. It's mine, it goes with me. No matter how many trips it takes. Guns and ammo that is. Now, some of my other crap......

Armslist - I was too scared to get weighed @ a weigh station in case DOT was lurking nearby, or some "do-gooder", running the scales who needed some excitement w/ I got busted for being overloaded (grossly!)

Titan6 - I know I needed a bigger trailer. I said in my post that I didn't have enough funds in the budget.

Since this was not a commercial vehicle, there would be no concern about weigh stations, or DOT. Just roll on by. As for the question, No, it all comes with me. I'll leave the kids behind first, and that's not gonna happen either.

Chicken coop's clucking all they want to, but roll on by: yer a private vehicle not for hire.

Now if you are bought down by the mobiles.... the little bathroom scales they have here and there...hm. What's the rate? .10 pound over axle and .20 over gross? I forget.

If I had to move and I absolutely couldn't move ammunition, I'd probably find a donor at the local gun range for small quantities or I might just take it to a local gun shop and let them sell it on consignment for larger quantites. I'd split it with them 50/50. Not a bad deal; no inventory cost and probably more profit.

I can fit all my firearm stuff plus my chick in my Ford Escape.

The issues around moving ammo have given me incentive to keep my repertoire small. Sacrilege, I know.

Hey colorado_handgunner!

We're neighbors (I live in Golden) so anytime you want to hit the hills, let me know & we'll pop some caps!

Maybe we could get a THR - "meet" going for this weekend.

BBQ, beer, & bullets! My Richard Petty BD is next Tuesday, 24th Mar. Would be a good excuse to go out & get some guns dirty! Hey! How 'bout a Easter eg...... er, bullet hunt?

PM me!

PS. I don't drink, so forget the beer!!

Nope. In fact, I'm planning to move it in a month. I was working on the details today. It's going to be a P.I.T.A unfortunately.

21 guns total and 10,000 rounds of ammo (not counting .22lr). Closer to 16,000 if you count .22lr.

The guns aren't the problem. It's the ammo that's the problem.

It funny ever since I moved out of my apartment into what was suppose to be a temporary situation with the parents (almost 2yrs now) I have been paying $50 a month for a storage unit, well the payments on the unit have long exceeded the value of the crap in there. I now think of how much ammo I could have gotten with that cash. When I move, I will be taking my guns with me and the tiny "stockpile I have" would fit in a duffle bag but when I do start to order ammo by the pallet load like so many of you guys do your damm straight its staying with me. Or if I could not move it, I would take it for one HELL of a range trip.

Hey Cheese.... You gotta count your .22's! Just because it's a rimfire or a smaller diameter bullet doesn't make them any less lethal! If I was toting a rimfire rifle & a box of (50-100-550) rimfire bullets, you wouldn't call me "unarmed", would you?

BTW - You say
10,000 rounds of ammo (not counting .22lr). Closer to 16,000 if you count .22lr.

Is that number all .22LR, or is some of it short, long, WMR, or shot? How did you buy the .22LR? All @ once or a little @ a time?

Need help moving?

That's the unthinkable, Sell my Ammo, I would rather cut my own big toe off and that ain't happen'in.
neither is me selling any ammo.

oh and jakemccoy - you can always get another chick. or just buy a Truck
