Would you trust a Taurus 1911 with your life?

I hate hate hate the heine straight 8 sights.

Boy, no argument here. I despise them and have often wondered how anybody could like them. Obviously, some (way more than a few) must or they wouldn't be making them. I'd much rather have no dots at all than to try to sight with stacked dots.

Every professional I have read or trained with has told me 200 is enough. I tend to agree. 200 error-free rounds is statistically likely to let me shoot three magazines in combat without a jam. Ask yourself this. You are testing your new.....whatever 1911 for reliability, you just spent $600 on ammo, and in your last box, you have a failure to feed. Are you going to buy another 1000 and start over at zero?

I trust mine,but I had it gone through as soon as I bought it.Had every thing squared up and tunned,It has over 5,000 rnds through it and runs out fine.Its one of my IDPA pistols.

Yeah. That's kinda my feeling. Here's how I test a gun for my carry ammo.

I shoot ~250 rounds of the dirtiest range ammo I can find through the gun. Then put 100 rounds of my carry ammo through it. If all feeds/fires/ejects ok, then I'm happy with it. I figure, if the gun can handle 100 rounds of my carry ammo while the gun is crudded up with 250rnds worth of range ammo, it'll fire the 3-5 that I need it to in an emergency while it's clean, lubed, running at 100%.

My first step would be to determine why, if possible. Unless I can absolutely place blame on the ammo or magazine, perform any necessary repair and shoot another thousand. That's my way. YMMV.

I had a Springfield GI 1911 but sold it a while back. Recently I bought an XD for home defense but in my shopping I inspected a couple Taurus PT1911's and have to say that I was impressed and nearly bought one instead of the XD. It had many more features than the GI did and was going for a lot lower price. I plan to buy one soon.

I'm not a fan of the 1911 platform, for carry purposes.

That said, and having shot a Taurus 1911, if forced to use a 1911 to defend my life, I'd have no problem with a Taurus 1911........and would choose it before a Kimber for sure. TJ

I'd have an AR-10, an AK, and a Benelli Tactical with buckshot (in case he actually gets in close), 6-8 similarly armed friends and my wife. The wife can run the Claymore mines...

Ps--And seriously--I don't own any guns that I wouldn't trust my life to. I don't currently own a single Taurus semi, but have sold a few. 'Nuff said.

i would not trust a les baer 1911 if i haven't shot at 200 rounds without a problem before...

taurus are good guns, all you have to do is, run 100/200 rounds and if they all go bang and extract without a problem, then you have a winner! this apply to all hanguns.

I've read too many reports about parts falling off of the Taurus 1911's, or breaking, and a lack of customer service from Taurus.

Too many horror stories about Taurus quality out there for me. Even if half of them are b*llsh*t, that's still a very high number.

Also, too many top knotch gun manufacturers around to settle for something less than the best, IMO.

Two FTF malfunctions. Both occured using the generic reloads and non-Taurus magazines.

I hear alot of talk about "tuning and adjusting" on 1911's.

That's main trouble with a 1911 people can't keep from messing with it. People buy a 1911 and are a instant gunsmith . 99.9% of 1911's work fine right out of box .

One link has to do with modifications others have done to their PT1911.
One link is about how their pistols look like after some sprucing up just because they wanted to.

The key factor is that the PT1911 is reliable. The links on just that alone are staggering, but they can be brought forth if need be.

People will not bet their lives or the lives of others on a gun that will not work when needed. It's just something that the owners are not going to take a chance on at any level.

There is a precedent that has been set here for that.

The only Brazillian 1911 I would trust is made by IMBEL for Springfield Armory.

Even if I owned the Taurus, which I don't, and even if I had 200 fault free rounds through it, I would still be expecting disaster on the next pull of the trigger because that was how life was like for my friend and his Taurus 85. It'd work fine for awhile, and I'd think about picking one up, then it would be down hard with a timing problem, gone for months back to Florida and then back home for more spotty service that wasn't worth saving a couple of hundred upfront bucks over. It couldn't be relied upon, so I'll never give the PT1911 a chance.

My only input is that I've had equally as much trouble with my Kimbers, Colts, Smiths, etc as I have with my Taurus's. This whole thread is moot, no gun should be carried just because of brand name, it should be carried because it has passed YOUR OWN tests of reliability and familiarity. I have no doubt people have had troubles with Taurus 1911's, just as they have with $3000 custom 1911's. I wouldn't carry that $3000 gun without first putting it through the paces either.

I wouldn't trust any semi-auto with my life...Wheelguns also fail, but not as often. In a world where Murphy's rules reign, I'm not willing to take the chance.

I carry mine regularly. I've had zero problems, zero FTF, zero FTE, zero stovepipes. It's also very accurate. I think I have 300-400 rounds through it at least.

i trust my PT1911, completely. i don't know if i'd trust yours, but mine's been faithful.
