Up until now I thought you were required to be 21 to carry. Apparently the limit is 18. Which, conveniently enough, I will be in a few months! Of course, I'm going to have to familiarize myself with a handgun, and become profficient enough with it for there to be a logical reason for me to carry it before I exercise that right, but I am very glad it exists.

Also, we honor other states licenses. How cool is that?

Sorry, a pretty pointless post, but I just thought I'd share my joy with everyone.

When did you all start carrying? Your first handgun?

Any sage advise or tidbits of wisdom would be greatly apreciated.

Oh yeah- we also have a lifetime license. *dances the dance of freedom*

KIRK'S FIRST LAW OF THE INTERNET: if it is the law in Texas, it is the law everywhere.

Application: You have to be 21 to carry a pistol in Texas, therefore one must be 21 in Indiana.

Christianninja, I am glad you are discovering that the memes of the Errornet gun culture are incorrect. You will soon discover that bears and pumas do not stalk us at every turn.

Check out Indiana Code 35-47-2-21. Indiana honors the licenses to carry of all other states--and foreign countries.:D

I started carrying at 13. I started carrying "on the street" at 18. My first handgun was a Smith .32, IIRC, but I had access to many different pistols.

My first carry gun that I purchased was a Taurus .38.

My sage advice in carrying: 1. get a cardboard box, 2. get all the training you can. We are very fortunate that many fine trainers come to Indiana. Take advantage of that. Remember it is not the pistol, it is you. Let your software drive your hardware.

Actually, Indiana isn't the only sub-21 can carry state. New Hampshire, Maine, North Dakota, South Dakota, and 18 is the minimum age to apply in Maryland (though they are not known for issueing permits). In Vermont, no permit is necesary and they loet anyone carry, as long as they legally own the gun.

questions for Indiana Gun owners

Since i live in "free" Illinois just across the border, can I bring in my guns to shoot at an Indiana range ?

First handgun? Glock 19, which I still own.

When did I start carrying? March of 2004. I was hurt in the military, and I'd carry whenever I left base as I couldn't walk or run very quickly (hooray for foot injuries!). I carried in WA when I was at Ft. Lewis, and in Arizona when I visited.

Once I move to Arizona in 5 days, I'll be carrying as often as possible, though as a student I'll be barred from doing so when on-campus. Ah, hooray for silly laws.

Parrut, you need the cardboard box for all the different holsters he will try before he finds one that works. You need a cardboard box to throw the rejects into. My advice: go to Milt Sparks, talk to Tony and get it done right the first time.

mp, that can't be right. The law says 21 in Texas.;)

Sun, um, yes, as long as you have permission to shoot at the range in Indiana.:uhoh: You can carry a pistol in Indiana too so long as you have a permit from another state and you are not a resident.

"My advice: go to Milt Sparks, talk to Tony and get it done right the first time."

Truer words were never spoke. Im wearing a Tony Kanaly designed VMII right now

Sungun:

No. If your state doesn't issue permits, you can't carry in Indiana. You CAN get a IN non-resident permit though, then you will be legal.

And we will welcome you. We need more people here who are gun friendly as a lot of people that move here have not been.

and besides which we don't hear much about Indiana and it sounds like a neat place.

Actually, a TCLEOSE certified LEO can carry at the min age of 18 in the GREAT state of TEXAS (only flag level to the US flag...:neener: ) So you can carry sub-21 in TX, you just have to meet certain criteria.

With that being said and having family in Muncie, IN (dump!) I sincerely hope that my efforts as the self-appointed, honorary, humble THR ambassador from the GREAT STATE of TEXAS have served to correct some minunderstanding concerning TX law. And yes, if it's law in Texas, it's the law of the land...See Art 5 TX constitution....

Started carrying at 18. I had my first permit shipped to my dorm room.

Indiana is a good state for gun rights.

04Silver, oh, you big kidder! Up here in Yankeeland, one does not need to be in law enforcement to carry a gun at 18. However, since that is the law in Texas I am certain it is the law everywhere.:D

Now the Texas State flag? Good grief, where's that citation? Do not see any exemption for Texas in the flag code or 4 USC § 7(c)?

Maybe it just exists in the collective ego? Texas Mythology 101?:D

Indiana's a great state for gun rights and very good for people to be relaxed around guns.

If Indiana were in the tropics it'd be tops on my list, but I hate winter and cold weather .

I am going to college in Idaho in January and just found out that in Idaho the minimum age for obtaining a CCW permit is 18 and the same age for buying handguns. :) It just sucks that you can't have any firearms in your possesion on campus. So i figure i will just take the classes and get the permit even if i cant carry while i am at school. I can always carry in a state where there is reciprocity. Too bad Wisconin is ruled by a liberal nut for a govener.:banghead: :banghead:

As to what I've put in BOLD Isn't it federal law that you must be 21 to buy a handgun?

Edit: as to the original topic. I only started carrying when I turned 21 as to that's the only way I could have gotten a pistol to carry. First gun was a Star Firestar in 9mm. Still own it, will never get rid of it.

Unfortunately, I believe that you are incorrect:( According to packing.org, the minimum age for a IDAHO CCW permit is 21. Please feel free to correct me if I am mistaken, but I don't believe that I am.

Proficiency is a logical reason to carry? If you need a reason (you don't) then carry to defend life. It doesn't seem to take much proficiency to shoot a human sized target an arm length away.
