XD vs Glock

kevin, how about the ole shooting test?

Rent or borrow both and shoot 100-300 rounds through each.

One box in a Glock, one box in an XD and let your targets decide.

HKP7s are very different to shoot but most P7 owners can't put them down for any other gun.

Shoot and see.

That is the best advice but I assume it is not always possible to do this. I have bought a lot of guns in my life and other than the guns I bought from people I know, I have never been able to shoot them before I bought. There is only one gunstore near me that has a shooting range and they won't let you shoot a new gun and I don't even think they rent guns at all. You may or may not be able to shoot a used guns before you buy but I don't even know if they allow that anymore. They used to give you a free range pass when you bought a gun so you could just shoot it after you bought it and if there was a problem, they would let you return it or fix it for you. I don't think you could return it just because you didn't like the way it felt.

Shooting before you buy is a great thing if you can do it but many of us don't have that opertunity. The next best thing is at least holding both guns side by side to compare them. Work the slides, try the trigger, try to get the feel of one and then switch to another and back and forth. It is eaiser to see what you like and don't like when you have both items you are comparing in front of you. Humans are good at telling the difference between items but not very good at judging one item on it's own based on memory. A good gunshop or gunshow should have both the Glock and XD so you can try them side by side.

As a side note, the XD black finish is not as good as the Glock, it wears off and lets the gun rust. There is an easy solution to that, buy the SS slide! :banghead: I don't know why people can't seem to get it in their heads that SS can be had. In the XD, SS is only a few bucks more and it is still much less than any Glock. You can get a brand new XD in SS with three hi-cap metal mags (not plastic like Glock) a holster and still have enough money left over to buy 1000rds of 9mm for practice for the same price as a Glock.

I currently own both Glocks and XD's. I really don't know if I'll be much help. I'm really back and forth myself as to which I like best.
My experience has been that ALL Glocks that I have had, from 9mm's to 10mm's, have been utterly reliable. Never had any trouble at all, and the finish is unbeatable. I don't really care for the trigger, but it really doesn't bother me either. I have complete confidence in any Glock, and even a simpleton like me can rebuild one if needed.
My experience with XD's is more limited. I am currently carrying my XD9 service as my CCW. The finish is all but worn off, but it has been close to 100%. The only malfunctions have been failures to go into battery. That was with FMJ ammo from a fully loaded mag. Only 2 or 3 times at the range. Never have had a failure to feed or eject. Most importantly to me is that I like the XD trigger better than the Glock's. The XD does have more muzzle flip, although not much, due to the slightly higher bore axis.
Having said all of this, I believe the Glock is the better of the two. The reasons being are the finish, the simplicity of repairing and utter reliability. I just don't have the same confidence in my XD's yet, but I still carry one. Thank goodness I don't have to choose to only have one or the other.

You've put into words very well, almost exactly what have heard from Police shooting a in IDPA, etc. over the years!

"As for why Glock makes a good cop gun?

1.) It's reliable.
2.) It's accurate.
3.) It's easy to use.
4.) It's virtually maintenance free...we're talking 90 days without cleaning here.
5.) It's supported. Aftermarket, armorers...etc.
6.) It's common.
7.) It's proven.
8.) Most cops frankly don't give a damn about their issued weapons and they get little to no attention. It will stay in a holster in between bi-annual qualifications and seldom receive proper lubrication and care. They get dirty, banged up and mistreated. They are seldom shot and when they are they better work 100% of the time. They had better be more accurate than the officer and simple to use. Lastly and number 9...

9.) They better be cheap...and Glocks are the least inexpensive issued weapon going."

Being new to guns I was initially drawn to a Glock. I personally liked the look of them ( I don't understand why people think they are ugly). When my time came to purchase one, the salesman showed me a XD-9. I liked the look of the gun (but found them to be bulkier in appearance than the Glock). I liked all the additional safety features (grip safety, cocked indicator pin, and loaded chamber indicator). I also preferred the mag release button and liked that it was ambidextrous. The XD was also $70 less.

Well I bought the XD-9. After several training classes and visits to the range I still had a hard time shooting it accurately. I felt the recoil was excessive (granted I'm not a big guy) and I just had a hard time shooting well with it. The gun is also extremely unforgiving of a limp wrist.

That being said, I rented a Glock G19 and compared both at the range. The Glock was far more accurate for me and felt more natural in my hand. I also noted the recoil was less. The Glock pushes back instead of flipping up, which to me is far more easier to control, even one-handed.

I also felt the Glock's trigger was lighter than the XD, which I prefered.

But the most important issue to me was that I shot the Glock significantly better than the XD. Therefore, I purchased a G19 and sold the XD and do not regret my decision at all.

I have had the opportunity to shoot several Glocks, and have friends and relatives that own and love them. But for me the XD was the better choice. The recommendation to rent each and try them for yourself is right on. I was able to shoot my son's Glocks or a friend's, then lay the Glock down and try the XD. Comparing them literally side by side was nice. For me, the fit of the XD is better.

A lot of folks think the XD is too 'snappy' or flips up too much. I think it is more noticeable in the XD than Glock, but I can still get back on target for a quick second shot faster because of the better fit. Try them both, get the one you like best, then shoot it until you trust it.

BTW, I have the XD Sub Compact, Service and Tactical models, all in .40. I have over 4k rounds throught the service model, and about 1000 through the sub compact. So far the only ftf was due to a bent mag (my fault) in the service model. I shot about 150 through each this weekend without a hiccup. I haven't shot the tactical as much as the other two. Of the three, the sub compact is my favorite. 95% of those rounds are my own reloads also.

When shopping for an autoloader for CCW, I considered both the XD-9 subcompact and the Glock 26. The main reason I picked the Glock was because the SA was significantly larger than the Glock (compare the two side-by-side). I'd shot both before and liked them both, but compact size was important. I'd been carrying a snubby revolver IWB and after losing some weight the butt stuck out through my shirt like it was happy to see me. I tried both out with a holster and the Glock printed much less than the Springfield.

I'm happy with my choice. I like the Glock so well I started using it in a centerfire pistol league instead of my CZ75B. I like being able to use the same gun for target shooting and CCW.
