I had an XD service pistol previously but the family fell on hard times and i had to get rid of it. I always thought i would buy the same gun again. I had no complaints at all. Now i've read several positive things about the M & P pistol and would like to hear from some owners that have both.

What safety features does the M & P offer if any? which do you prefer and why? I live in the San Fransico bay area and so it is difficult to actually handle a new model pistol because the gun shops are so small they only carry the established guns.

Thank you for your comments

M&P

I have three M&P and have had no problems with any of them. They do not have high round counts since they are fairly new. I sold a XD9 service to fund the M&P9c purchase. The XD to me seems top heavy, and comes with to many extras that are not needed. Get the Smith!

Rebate

Sorry forgot to tell you the Smith comes with a $50 rebate and two free mags if you purchase I think by the end of April.

The M&Ps offer a magazine disconnect safety.

The 45 ACP M&Ps offer a thumb safety.

No grip safety as on the XD.

I have an M&P9 with 1200+ rounds through it, only one issue: when I moved the mag drop button to the trigger finger (right) side, I'd get mag drops when using a high grip. Other than nthat it has been flawless. see mp-pistol.com

The XD made Glocks look like a joke. Now the M&P has done the same to the XD. The M&P is THE Polymer pistol to beat.

I have a personal preference for the M&P due to its better hand fit and shorter-stroke trigger.

As for safety features, it has a hinged trigger that requires your finger, fully wrapped around it, to fire (although things like shirt tails, drawstrings, some holster lips and such could possibly catch on it; I would only carry it in a well designed holster), and an internal firing pin block. A magazine disconnect safety is optional. It ain't gonna fire unless you somehow pull the trigger. ;)

+1.

The Glock is more comfortable in my hands than the XD, but the XD points better for me. The M&P beats them both IMO. Not only in ergonomics, but I think the triggers are better, too.

YMMV.

Nothing against the XD - I've never shot one but the ones I've handled have felt pretty good and I haven't heard many complaints about them.
I like the M&P though and right now they're a pretty good deal with the $50 rebate and two free mags.

both excellent guns
i own an XD i have friends with the M&P
ive shot a few thousand rounds through both
i prefer the XD

flip a coin... you cant really go wrong with either

I shot a friend's XD 9mm on a range session. While the ergos aren't bad, it really does feel funny weight-wise. I'm not sure if it's top-heavy or what. I do know that I love my M&P40.

I own them both and very seldom fire the XD anymore, the M&P goes to the range every trip.

I own XDs and a friend has an M&P. We both trade up at the range and shoot each others guns. While the M&P is a nice pistol, it can't stack up against the XD (IMHO). To me the XD is just a better built, more solid firearm. The one thing I hate about the M&P is the trigger. To me it looks cheap and feels like I will break that dang thing.

i have 2 xd's and i can never imagine having to get rid of them and if for some reason i did have too then i would get the smae model back again, you already know the xd....

the m&p does have great ergos, and other than that i beleive they are pretty much the same, no real advancement over the xd at all just another option.

The XDs and the M&Ps are both nice. I knew my first 45ACP would be one of these two, for me the ergonomics on the M&P were better so I went with it. I have about 1500 rounds through it now with nary a problem and like the pistol a lot. Mine does not have the mag disconnect nor does it have the thumb safety.

I'd gladly buy a M&P9 also if I ever needed to buy another hi-cap 9. I could also easily see myself buying an XD9. It's more likely that I'll add an XD45 to my collection though.

I don't think you could go wrong with either one, just see which one feels better in your hand.

In compact 9 I've got one of each. It's hard to chose between them but my first love was the S&W. The XD has night sights so they are each unique. Can't go wrong with either one--maybe you should get them both, too.

Both should be completely reliable out of the box. My preference goes towards the M&P for personal preferences: Better ergonomics, lower bore axis, better pointability, softer recoil and not as front heavy.

The only advantage the XD has over the M&P is a slightly better trigger. But both triggers suck out of the box anyhow.

That's exactly how I felt with the M&P. I loved everything about it except the trigger. IMO the trigger doesn't feel solid at all.

I had to make that decision last year between the XD and M&P. I bought the XD because the trigger felt better and I knew I was going to have it improved even more by a gunsmith. But, now I understand the M&P has caught on so fast, qualified gunsmith's can "better" the trigger. As many have stated, they shoot well out of the box and are reliable. Both are comparable in price, except the M&P has a $50.00 rebate. You've heard it before, which feels better to you? That's the one to purchase. Oh, one other thing. I know it's a petty thing, but the XD breaks down like many auto's, the M&P is designed to breakdown slightly different. Not a big deal, but that might be the tie-breaker for you.

I love my XD45. I have shot a 9MM M&P and thought it was extremely comfortable, however I feel that this could easily be matched by Springfield if they release custom back straps (should be an easy thing to do). Basically if you like the 1911 platform the XD is the best match available in a polymer.

You also have to be amazed by the sheer amount of .45ACP the mag holds while keeping a very slim grip!

I will be purchasing a 5" XD45 (no thumb safety) in a few weeks for me. At the same time, my wife will ge getting a S&W MP9. My wife is so cool!

I can post back with impressions of each, but I'm not sure it would be fair to compare a .45 to a 9mm.

When we compared the XD9 to the MP9 at the store, the XD felt beefier to me, but the MP9 seemed to slide more smoothly.

Either way, I'll be blasting the heck out of some targets a few weeks from now with both.

As a side question, is SA still doing the free XD Gear with the purchase of a new gun - holster/mag pouch/cable/2 magazines? The only dealer I've gone to so far said they didn't have that.

(Great forum, BTW).

Our local police dept is looking to replace their old Smith 5906's and had Smith send them some M&P models for evaluation. They had 3 different guns malfunction to the point of being unusable and had to be returned to S&W with less than 1000 rounds in each gun. I'm not sure if they were 40's or 9mm's but think they were 9mm's because they seem happy with the performance they have been getting from the 5906's. I was really thinking about buying one before I heard about this.
