I have a 4.5" XDm 40 cal and a 4.5" XDm 9mm. My 40 has a stock slide and sights and is my normal, reliable daily-carry sidearm. My 9mm has raised sights, threaded barrel, and a Burris Fast Fire and is my plinking gun. The raised sights make it near impossible to holster draw, and the BFF isn't your best friend in a "situation" if you have to stop to turn it on and/or the batteries die.

Now I am faced with needing to use the 9mm reliable daily-carry sidearm. In my new role as a school marshal it is required to carry a 9mm. I just finished customizing the current 9mm slide and don't want to undo all that work. So I need to get a new slide with internals for the 9mm. However, I am unable to find any OEM slides for the XDm unless I want to pay big $$ for a dv8 custom raptor slide. I don't have the money for a new gun or the expensive custom slide.

So my question is, since these guns are otherwise near-identical, are the slides compatible? If I put the 9mm barrel and spring-rod into the 40 cal slide (complete with original internals) on top of the 9mm lower, will it even fit? I am looking for a reliable match up that I can bet my life on. If I try this, will I get a good service weapon or a hand full of dynamite?

Thanks.

I don't know the answer to your question. If I were in your shoes, I would definitely call Springfield to ask them. For liability purposes they may decline to answer or say something like "each slide is designed only for its original frame". However, they should know more about replacement slides for your gun than anyone else. If you are real lucky, they may want to help a school marshal.

Good luck!

Here's the problem. The slide fits, and will hold the 9mm barrel, and will ride on either lower. The mags fit either lower and feed a round into the chamber /barrel just fine. HOWEVER, the tolerances at the breach are massive. The 40 barrel in the 40 slide leaves no wiggle room. But the 9mm barrel in the 40 slide leaves almost 2mm of wiggle room.

Upon firing, what will that do? At the very least, I expect that would affect accuracy. Worse, it could have tolerance issues farther back at the chamber, which might cause damage to the weapon and/or shooter's hand. I just don't know. THAT is what I am worried about.

Solution "A" would be a new OEM slide. But I can't find anywhere to buy one. Even the manufacturer says nobody sells them. Only the custom jobs by dv8, but they cost more than a new gun.

Solution "B" would be a conversion barrel in the 40, but they are out of stock everywhere.

Dangerous game in my opinion.

I wouldn't let internet wisdom determine the fate of the person firing the firearm.

Call the mfg.

If the used market along with new wasn't in pandemic election mode I would say pick up one of the 1000's on the shelf would be a good option but my travels say that market is pretty dry or pretty overpriced depending you may want to confirm.

IMO Why even go through all of that. Just leave all alone and pick up another pistol. You need one anyway and make life easy for yourself...

Your 9mm as is may not be perfect for carry/duty, but it is what you have. Maybe a new holster to tide you over? Some kydex maker should be able to accomodate...

I would just fit it up how you want it and hit the range to see how it is.
This. ^^^.
Try it. If it functions then call the manufacturer to make sure you aren’t asking for trouble. Or reverse that for a safer option.

Why can't you buy standard sights and the fast fire off? it would sit in a standard holster then. And them, maybe get a standard 9mm barrel.

What i would do is what was posted earlier, get a 40-9 barrel for 150 bucks. I would not risk using the 9mm barrel in a 40 slide.

I know disposable income is different for everyone, and the OP said a new gun isn't in the cards. But I really think just buying another gun is the best solution here. Maybe trade for one if money is tight. Or maybe borrow a small amount of money from someone you trust to not be a d-bag about it.

Can you just swap out the sights on the 9mm with a lower set and be good to go?

I may have missed something?
