I was thinking of getting a few yard signs such as "protected by .38 special". I figure this might stop a few of the more violent home invaders out there, a good thing, seeing as how I'd rather not have to shoot anyone. (Will if I have to, but I don't want to have to.)

Thoughts? Ayone know any good ones, or where I could get them?

Maybe a deterrent, but maybe an invitation for someone looking to steal your guns while you're away.

Dope

why not put a sign that says...

"I have guns in this house, please, please wait for me to leave then break in"

Bad Idea... all the way around.

I'll explain.

First...

"protected by .38 special".

You just invited caliber war # 6,812 on THR. You will have drive-by visitors from THR stopping by to explain to you why you need at least a .45ACP or 10mm if you really value your life. Its a headache you really don't want. We eat all your cookies.

Second...

"protected by .38 special" often translates in the criminal mind "there's a place I can get guns when he goes to work. The .38 may be your only gun, and you may take it with you everwhere. However, an unconvinced criminal will be stopping by at 9:48 AM to satisfy their inquisitiveness on the issue.

Third...

If you DO put out the sign, it isn't complete unless you wear this shirt often:

And look intense whenever you go outside.

1. Tacky as hell.

2. Possible invitation to crooks that you've got goodies in the house.

3. If you ever -do- have to shoot someone in your house (god forbid) you might have to defend that sign during your trial. Not saying that it will doom you, of course - but in general, the less you have to explain to a jury in such a situation, the better. I'd like to come off as mild-mannered as possible, thanks. Such a sign is a great way to get a jury looking at you as a "gun nut" instead of just some regular guy.

heck, i want a "yard sign" (actually, its a license plate) like the t-shirt above! i have a yard sign if you will, placed in a strategic location, not generally observed from the street. it says "protected by smith and wesson- 4 nigths a week - you guess which nights". of course, it is incorrect, (we are protected EVERY NIGHT) but if they make it that far, they will get the point.

I wouldn't do it, why invite a bad guy in to steal your goods when you're gone.

JWarren,

That there is hilarious.

I knew someone was going to play the race card...

But yes, it is right up there with the window sticker that says, "Insured by Smith & Wesson."

Race card?

Oh brother.

Some people just itch for opportunities to use that phrase.

My driveway is guarded by a 5 foot, 400 pound concrete gargoyle. I'd like to find a place where I can order a weather-proof sign to go next to him that says "Trespasser's Souls Will Be Eaten"

It cuts down on the pamphlet-wielding nutters that like to drift by now and again. :D

Actually, Moose's idea might be good, put something inside your house, but not clearly visible form the outside.

I actually don't own a .38, but I figured it would be a better deterrant than "protected by .25 ACP" (I don't own one of those either.), but a .38 special probably wouldn't be as atractive to thiefs as "protected by .40S&W".(I need to get a .40 S&W, but that's for another thread.)

I think it's a great idea not to advertise at all, no matter what caliber you choose to put on the sign.

Besides the reasons above - some criminals just don't give a damn. What's to stop some thug from casing your house one night, seeing the sign, and then coming back later, armed to the teeth himself? Nothing. Of course, you might have that happen anyway. My point is simply that the less the criminal knows about the contents of my house, the better. I don't want him to break in at all, but if he does, I want him to be anticipating as little resistance as possible.

That way, I (or anyone else caught in the house during a break-in) could very well be allowed a few extra seconds of reaction time when the badguy is confronted with a weapon, and caught off guard. If I've got signs posted all over warning of the wicked bad firepower I've got waiting for them, that takes away that little bit of advantage, for absolutely no measureable gain.

I live in a rural area so this sign is not visible from the road. It says: "If you can read this, you're in range." Might not be appropriate in an urban environment.

Keeping it real .

Put a big scary picture of something scary in your yard and scare them off.

yea,, that sounds good.

Better yet dont post nothing ,just sit and wait locked and cocked in your private dwelling and pray for the souls who cross the line and pray they never do.

"Beware of Dog" is good, especially if you don't actually have a dog. (If you do have a dog, it can be seen as indication that you know the dog is dangerous).

But, "Protected by S&W" etc, is a BAD idea. If you do ever use a firearm in self defense, how do you think the sign will look to the prosectuor when he's deciding to prosecute or not?

If you make it look like you *want* to shoot someone, or are joking about shooting someone, all you are really doing is setting yourself up for legal problems later if you DO shoot someone.

Besides, there's also the whole "don't advertise that their are guns to steal here" issue as well.

Or..Ya just might as well say...If you are coming in..Make sure your weapon is at "full ready"!! That way you can warn them & give them a fair chance..
I think..BAD idea!

Well, I'm getting a little old for this sort of thing, and my potbelly is starting to hide my belt buckle. And you should know that I can shoot fast, and I can shoot accurately, but I generally have to pick one or the other. Oh, and I'm going to need about $100 an hour plus a relocation bonus. Let me know when I start.
