Well my father and I took a long road trip out to Camp Perry to pick up 2 new to us garands. I bought one for him for fathers day.

After 16hr flight I landed in Chicago, drove another hour to pick him up, then we headed out. We drove through the night and got there in the morning only to find the service grades were gone:eek:.

We searched and gauged and searched until we found the best 2 field grades. I got a HRA and he went Springfield.

Mine gauged at 1 and about 1/3 at the muzzle and the same for chamber(just under half) The mechanics are good, and she shoots fantastic.

My dads was just over 1.5 at the muzzle and 2 at the chamber and has freshly finished internals with almost no wear on them. Both barrels looked flawless inside with absolutely no pitting or frost. Sharp rifling. Both had great muzzle crowns.

We stocked up on the Greek ammo while we were there too:D.

When I get back to Dubai I will be ordering a Special grade for myself for fathers day and keeping my current one as a knock about rifle.

And before anyone asks about the required M2 ball sticking out of the muzzle photo Air France lost my baggage with my camera in it:mad::eek::barf: and still can't locate it. Once they find it I will post up pics unless they don't find it at which point I'm screwed.

At any rate these rifles are truly a class act. I'm starting on the sanding and refinishing of the stock when I get done here. Mine has 3 "notches" on the Upper stock piece that Im just going to leave alone, but otherwise just a standard multiple coats of linseed oil finish.

I hope to find a camera to borrow to post up some pics.

Dubai to Port Clinton for a Garand? ...I doubt anyone's gone much further.

So is it safe to say that CMP is down to the bottom of their barrel?

It seems like they are out of stock or out of choices on all types.

Desidog,

Then I went to North Texas to see friends! I got a 16hr drive back to chicago area, then another 16hrs worth of flight time next week to get back. I wonder if I earned a Iron Butt award for traveling. lol.

I'm still waiting on Air France to find my luggage for my camera.

Im hoping to get before and after photos before I leave.

#3, the muzzle erosion and chamber front edge erosion is what is being gauged. There is a testing device for each end, those numbers are really good. Those rifles have a long life ahead of them.
