Yes, Virginia, you really do have to tilt the pistol when shooting from retention.

So I'm practicing double taps from the draw in retention, and shooting WWB 9mm in my CZ P01. I'm doing well and putting 2 in COM from 10 feet in retention. But then as I increase the speed, I start getting a failure to fire on the second round. I TRB it, but darned if it doesn't keep doing it again. ***?

Then I discover that my shirt is getting in between the firing pin and the hammer, and cushioning the hammer just enough that it doesn't fire. I don't see it because I TRB each time and the shirt slides out.

So. Yeah. Shoot from retention, tilt the pistol way to the outside so it doesn't bind on your shirt.

Actually, you have to watch how far you tilt it out... too far creates both an opportunity for it to be grabbed and leveraged away from you and the potential to actually miss the guy right in front of you (picture the 6-8" differential from your side to the muzzle if you stick the gun 90 degrees out).

We teach to put your thumb and the magazine well both against your body, this keeps the gun close, but keeps the slide off your body/out of the shirt.

My slide will occassionally get buggered up in my cover garment -depending on what I'm wearing- no matter how far I flag my thumb and cant the gun. Still haven't figured out the solution for that one.

Remember that, depending on distance to the target, you may want to deal with your problem before fixing your gun.
