Just how low and high can you go with Unique? Like loading down 38 special and loading up 357? I have bullseye, unique, w231, and titegroup, but I would guess that unique covers the widest range of loading for all the powders I have. Correct? trikerider
Oops, typo on heading, sorry guys.

Yes pretty much.

However, if you have Bullseye, Titegroup, they would certainly burn cleaner then a very light charge of Unique. The W-231 would too, but even it might not do as well as the Bullseye or Titegroup in very light .38 Spl loads.

For full power .357 loads, Unique will give up about 150 FPS over a max load of 2400.
But it will give higher velocity then your faster powders will.

I'm using nothing but Unique for .357 and .44 mag, including hunting rounds. Despite its history as a dirty powder, it really is very very clean these days.

I've always liked Unique for certain applications. Five grains in a .38spl with a 150-160 grain led swc is a boss load that won't strain anything. In the .357, . mag44, .41 mag and .45 Colt I prefer 2400, Blue dot or WW296/H110. Light loads are great with Bullseye, Red Dot.

I've loaded up some hotter unique loads for 44mag in the past. I noticed the recoil with unique is slightly sharper than with 2400. With that being said, unique is a great powder for light and medium loads, but I perfer 2400 for mag loads.

As far as Unique, I use 4.5gr in 38 Spl or 6gr in 357 cases with a cast bullet. I'll also load 9gr in the 44 Mag and 357 Herrett when using cast bullets.
Even the "new" Unique burns dirty with very light loads, but that's what Bullseye is for.

Unique is amazingly versatile. I wonder if it burns slower when it's compressed, or something. Or maybe because it's been around so long, there's better load data for it, compared to newer powders that are released with more conservative data.

I have found Unique to be very good with all my calibers, from 9mm, .40, .45, and .357. The only reason I also use other powders is because the data shows a few fps faster with some other powders, and because it's a bit crunchy for dipping. Ball powders scoop a bit faster!

My question for Unique is: "What's that smell?"

I think from the way Titegroup is advertised it would be better for 38spl due to being less position sensitive. I have not used titegroup but I use Accurate #2 and it is not position sensitive but lite loads of Unique are.
