For the rest of your life.

It must be capable of defending your life as well as putting food on the table.

It must also be concealable in a HIGHLY anti-gun environment. (ETA: Concealable on your person.)

What do you choose?

I'd look for a less anti gun environment, whether it be living in our cabin in Alaska or just to a more friendly country or state. Assuming you successfully conceal ownership of a gun you are still going to be completely screwed when you have to use it for self defense.

We have handguns, shotguns, and rifles because they all meet different needs.

In a situation where you are truly limited to one firearm I'd pick a shotgun, it can be used for hunting, self defense, is readily available is easy to train people to use and has a wide variety of ammunition available and can be outfitted with a normal stock or pistol grip.

It isn't a weapon that is typically easily concealable on the body but one can pretty easily justify it's use for hunting, sporting, etc.

I'd probably want a gun in a caliber that the police, military, or government uses, or that is legal for civilians to buy.

GLOCK 17 or 19 and I'll find other ways of gathering food.

There are a lot of other guns I might choose, but I'd have to think about it for a while.

AR-type.....Bushmaster, for example, in 5.56. Good SD weapon, accurate enough for hunting. Don't know how you mean to "conceal"(on person, in home, etc.). Also fairly cheap ammo. One among many that would be excellent choices.

any decent AK style. Easy to maintain, powerfull, reliable, and accurate enough to get the job done. I always said back in the day of my service that I would trade in my M-16 for an AK anyday haha. Concealing might be a bit of a problem, but who would want to conceal in a society like that haha, I'll die for my freedoms.

for the environment you describe i'd keep my s&w model 27 handy..... i know how to use it and i know it will stop whatever comes along.......... also i have enough components and know how to reload what i might need....

Under those circumstances I would have to choose a 4" GP-100 or equivalent. It is a compromise, but in mostly beneficial ways.

Logical answer, 1. Spirit of the question, 0.

I would go with an SKS. Reliable and a little more power than the AR, which would be my second choice.

contender with 14" barrel in .223, with scope. I have one now, and it is exceedingly concealable. It can take anything in North America depending on placement and bullet type. It will put meat on the table, and knock someones d**k in the dirt up to 500 yds.
I load 55 Gr soft point for heavier game or fighting, and 40 gr Ballistic tip for varmints. 50 gr hollowpoint does all small game cleanly. 50 gr TNT at 2950 fps will center punch a 10 inch target at 250 yds every time. I segregate a daily load into mint tins, (17 rds each) each labled prominantly. In a longer term basis, I would carry them in 50 rd boxes.

This reminds me of a grade school schenario:

"Imagine you are stranded on a desert island surrounded by sharks, sting rays, and killer whales. You have nothing but the clothes on your back, a box of matches, a pocket knife, a ball of twine, a bottle of whiskey, and five palm trees. There is a tiger roaming the east side of the island and the west side is slowing being eroded into the ocean. How do you escape?"

Simple; stop imagining.:neener:

To avoid being flamed for being a smarta$$, I would have to go along with those who say a good .357 mag., maybe a model 19 or something.

Either a .44mag or .357mag wheel gun. None of these new MIM pot metal parts guns. A nice older one made of 100% stainless steel and with hardened internal steel parts that are well fitted and smooth. Those also have superior trigger pulls and proper hammers. Expensive, but the logical choice.

You can take a deer with it. You can defend your family with it. You can even get shotshells for it. You don't lose brass unless you have to do a quick reload in a gun-battle. It is concealable. Any load will work in it.

I don't think any carbine or shotgun (unless sawed off) is concealable in a society which has banned guns. I'm assuming that's the gist here. That there is some chaos, SHTF or there's been an all out gun ban. A shoulder rig with coat makes this disappear.

A longer barrel wheel gun gives you the ballistics you need for various uses, but still remains concealable.

There are exceptions, like some of these ultra-compact subguns. But I'm assuming that NFA stuff is not applicable here since you'll be the first to get a knock on the door during confiscations.

A bubba'd smooth bore bolt action shotgun with peep sights. Might not be very accurate but I could take the widest assortment of game with it.

Keltec PLR 16, .223 holds 30 rounders, fairly accurate at close range (less than 75 yrds). and is a hoot to shoot :neener::neener:,

I know, I know. Keltec? That piece of junk? You got all wrong I tell ya, all wrong.:D

I'e got one and if it was down to 1 gun, IE I had to leave EVERYTHING this is one gun in my SHTF bag. you can hunt with it, but you WILL NOT be quite about it. The sucker shoots a flame a foot or so out of the barrel.:what:

OK, I'll bite, but I will also cheat! I would build a short barreled rifle on a pistol action. Think of a fairly small framed, high power semi auto pistol (Single stack .4o or .45auto), with a detachable shoulder stock and a couple of barrels. 4in, and then perhaps a 12in. I would prefer to have a seperate top end (slide) for the second, longer barrel so that switching out between the two would be faster!

Think a 1911 commander version of this.:D

It would not be ideal, but I think it would do better to meet your scenerio than about any other thing I can think of.
