You got to read this thread about the .45 vs. 9mm debate.

astraman,

Welcome to the forums.

It is a rare person indeed who would admit to using anything other than a 9mm or a .45 , not to mention GASP a .32, in this thread. And with only 4 posts under your belt.

I think you'll fit right in.

Welcome,

And in case no one has told you.

New guy buys the beer and ammo. Make mine .45 and Guinness. :D

Make mine 9mm and vodka tonics.

This isn't a thread about 9mm vs. .45acp, it is a thread about threads about 9mm vs. .45acp. It is slightly different since we are not talking about the merits of which cartridge is better but rather which argument is better. So far, I have to side with the level headed people that say either is fine so long as good JHPs are used in a gun that you are comfortable with. I was trying to make the point that stats show no real difference in "stopping power" between 9mm or .45acp and people that think a .45 will knock you through the wall with a shot to the pinky are just as stupid as those that say the 9mm doesn't have enough power to kill a rabbit.

I love it when someone says something stupid because it makes it that much easier to shut them down.

albanian Im with you there

OK BATF (Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms) Ill take Vodka, a nice Cuban, and 9MM, so who’s bringing the chips to the party?

How about a 9 mm for your weak arm and a 45 for your strong arm? Then you can have fast and more, with the slow and knock em back 20 feet.

my favorite is when people tell me that a .22 is more deadly/dangerous because it will bounce around inside with a food processor effect.

i'm thinking whatever you shoot well is fine but as far as the 9mm and .45 being equal with good jhps, i'm not convinced only because hollow points don't always expand. besides, any REAL man carries a .45, right? i'm a man so infused with testosterone as to be almost godlike. while this makes it largely unecessary that i carry a pistol, i prove my manhood by carrying a .600 nitro express derringer. for a trail gun, i figure more power is important, so i use my 81mm hogleg. :neener: top that!

I've spoken to several LEOs over the years who've had to use the "wimpy" 9mm to defend themselves. For all of them, it did the job with one or two shots.

I also met a guy who'd taken two rounds of .45 COM and made a full recovery.

YMMV, but my collection is split evenly between nines and .45s, and there are a ton of other factors that I take into account before caliber when I choose which one to carry at the time.

There are idiots in both camps but I like how only the idiots in the .45 camp are being singled out without pointing out the statements made by idiots from the 9mm camp.

Choose and shoot what you feel comfortable with. But if you can only feel good about your choice by denigrating the choices of others your argument doesn't really hold water.

But according to Albanian, is that anything like Elbonian?, it's not a 9mm vs .45 thread.

Facts:

With ball ammo, .45 is better than 9mm against flesh. With HP ammo it gets more even with the 45 having an edge.
You get more mag capacity with 9mm than with .45.
9mm is better at barrier penitration in most situations.

Even if you miss with a .45 the bullet going past his head will knock him over.....and you can shoot a guy in head 10 times with a 9mm and he'll just laugh it off :uhoh:

I am gratified to read that "the .357 has the best percentage of one shot stops" When I finally hear that bump in the night I will enter combat knowing that if I don't get the job done with the 16 rds of 9mm and 9 rds of .45acp in my top drawer, the poor BG will surely mess his BVDs when he hears the second drawer stealthly open and the 'whisk' of the Model 19 Combat Magnum with its 6 rds of high percentage one shot stops sliding from its holster.

Edited to add: Oh yes, I forgot about the 7 rds of #4 BB in the 870HD.

"a 45-70!!?? why not just lug around a new S&W .500mag with a 4in barrel....knockum down and keep um down if ya can handle the recoil...."

heh...

Jeez

I nominate Xdoctor's for the hands-down, slam-dunk best response to this type of thread that I've seen in a WHILE! That picture rolled up and I spit coffee all over my dang monitor. Hope I didn't short out my keyboard...
R-O-F-L-M-A-O!

What forum was this? I wanna go have a few laughs with'em. Might ask'em if their mamas know they're playin' on her computer... :D

Thought your were being slick and no one would notice, huh Tuner....go ahead and tell the rest of the fourm that your post which just happened to be no. "45" was a coincidence..uh-huh.....

But seriously, I have both and enjoy both calibers...I'm still on the fence, so I will not join the war of the calibers yet...
(just kidding w/you Tuner)

No?

Nawwwwww Safety First. I chuckle every time I hear somebody rant on about how wimpy the 9 is, and how a .45 is so much better. The .45 holds an edge with hardball, to be sure...but when both started improving with modern loadings and good hollowpoints...124 grain for 9mm please ...that gap closed up quite a bit. Now the two are so close that it's essentially a toss-up. I prefer the .45 because it's the caliber that's "right" in a 1911, and my hand is permanently molded around that grip frame...like a pair of worn-out tennis shoes...and because I've spent so much time with'em that for me to switch now would be like startin' all over. Too old for that.

The reality is that, with a round that generates the energy and penetration of the really good 9mm loadings, feeling underarmed or undergunned would be a stretch. If the round is placed well, it will do well. If not, the best hollowpoint likely won't. Handguns are woefully underpowered things to trust your life to in the first place...up to and including the .44 Magnum. Bullet placement is about all there is to count on...and that's up to the shooter.

Now then...I have caried a 9mm on occasion. The old Beretta M-92...the one with the frame-mounted safety...and felt well-armed at that. The only problem with the big Beretta was the thickness made it problematical to hide.
Other than that, it was a great pistol. Never a malfunction with any ammo...Accuracy wasn't anything to write home about, but entirely adequate for its intended purpose, and 16 rounds on tap, if that really matters. Hell, I've even carried a Beretta M-84 and felt good about it...and would again under the right circumstances. Not as good as with the 92 or one of my 1911s...but I knew that it would do as well as I could make it do. 10 or 12 rounds of .380 Silvertip placed around the ol' wishbone in 3 or 4 seconds will completely wreck your day...guaranteed.

There! I've said it! *grumblegrumble* :D

Does anyone else from the Knoxville tribe think this guy looks eerily like our friend Greenfurniture, with about an extra 15yrs on?

End a fight:
1) 17 rounds of 9mm XTP
2) 1 round of 45 FMJ
3) Simply rack the slide on a 10mm Delta Elite. BG's recognise the sound of imminent doom. Those that don't faint dead away just drop to their knees, blubbering like babies.

I don't even need to carry ammo- saves weight. :neener:

That's not blubbering it's laughing, and they faint from lack of oxygen from laughing so hard.
