Your favorite big game knife

I found a Wyoming knife to be the best gut / skin knife. Other than that it's my leatherman blade.

A Buck 110.
I am terrible at sharpening things, so I let a friend sharpen it. The thing cuts through meat like a hot knife through butter. He said he doesn't stop sharpening until he can shave some hair off his arm with it. I believe it, as this thing is scary-sharp!

My hunting knife is a ancient Queens Cutlery double bladed folder.
When folders became the rage in the early 60's I bought a whole display card
( 12 knives) from my FFL supplier for $4.50/ knife, sheath included.
I sold all but two, one for me one for Dad.
The blades are shaving sharp and I know that I've dressed out at least 75 deer with it.

I have a Marbles Woodcraft made in 1916 that is still the best hunting knife I have ever used.

It will hold a shaving edge through all the meat you want to cut without stopping to rest up a bit.

Here is my Steyr engraved for me in 1947 by my uncle when he was an officer in post war Austria.

I still have the Buck caper/skinner set that I bought at Walls on my first trip to Wyoming mule deer hunting when I was 18. That was 36 years ago. They are defiantly heirloom blades.

favorite big game knife

I have a lot of trout/bird knives, (my favorites) but for bigger stuff I like my
Blackjack 4" drop point. Great balance and holds it's edge.

Buck 110 folder. Deer blood don't eat it and it's easy to clean afterwards.

These cover about all my camping/hunting/fishing needs.
The Canadian knives ( a DH Russell and a Herter's) and the German folder get the most big game use because the Nesmuk is still kind of untested except around the house. 4gg304.jpg

I have my grandpas circa 1900 marbles ideal but I've only taken it out a couple times. Too much sentimental and monetary value.
I use a D2 MadPoet by the late Mel Sorg jr for a fixed blade and I carry a Bob Dozier folding hunterin my pocket. I always have a plastic handled mora in my backpack and a grandfors bruks wildlife hatchet.

Schrade is no longer Schrade. I bought a drop point Schrade skinning knife a few weeks ago. the knife was not made in the US. In fact, the country of origin is not on the blade. When I got to digging into the literature it was made in China. Most Schrades are made in Eastern Europe or China.

Yes sadly they went belly up and Taylor bought out the rights to the Name and patterns and the are not anywhere as good as they were through 2000. But you can still made in the USA ones at Gun shops , Shows and pawn shops.

When Schrade went "belly up" I bought evert Schrade that I could find locally.
It's true, you can OCCASSIONALLY find a USA made Schrade at Gun Shows,OR in a local Mom & Pop hardware BUT the opportunities are becoming SCARCE!

I think this is true. Its harder and harder to find new or near new USA made Sharpfingers, for example. I recently picked up a new Scrade USA blade that had been "handled" by a third party (there were a lot of bare blades up for sale when Schrade USA first closed its doors, this was one of them). Its probably my current favorite field knives.

In one of my "scores" a few years back iI picked up two Schrade 158OT Gut Hook Skinners.
Still "in the box" sheaths included.
The store was closing, dumping goods at low prices AND I just happened to be there.

Mad Dog Baby Rhino,
You can only get one if you have hunted with Kevin and wait 2 years! The full sized Rhino is uber rare as they don't work well for under 2000 pound game!
I had a late 70s Jimmy Lile (bought it from him after paying the down at his shop) which I sold for big bucks about 6 years ago, to support my Mad Dog habit. The Mad Dog knives work better for me, and yes I have tried both!

A couple....

Helle Tor, a gift from a friend. Best field dressing knife ever. Cuts through deer ribs like butter, once dressed 4 or 5 deer and stilll needed no touchup.

Pop's old Case, with a 6" narrow blade. Good for "Ringing" and takes a wicked edge.

Bucklite. A variant of the 110 with plastic handles.
