If I could afford/get my hands on a P938 or a Rohrbaugh, I'd carry 9mm. Problem for me is most 9mm carry guns are to big for me, so I carry an LCP with Critical Defense. Love it, and would trust my life to it.

.38/.357 - because I CAN choose either. The versatility of the .38 range is nearly unmatched, and the platform is ridiculously reliable (provided it is well maintained, or it's a Ruger... :p)

9x23 Winchester - At 1450 fps with a 125 gr. bullet, it’s an easy to reload (no bottleneck case like a .357 Sig) “.357 magnum” in a rimless case for a semi-auto platform.

Mine is in a Colt Combat Commander that delivers 585 ft/lbs of energy and the recoil is extremely manageable, unlike that of a .357 Magnum revolver.

9mm for me; 124 gr. double tap gold-dot +P. at roughly 500 ft lbs of energy, I never feel under-gunned by .45's or .40's, particularly with 19 rnds in the P226 and 20 more in the weak side pocket.

I chose my favorite carry handgun first (Ruger LCR) which happens to be chambered for .357 Mag. If I were to choose my favorite cartridge first and then select a pistol it would be the .45 Auto.

I'm split across 9mm/.40/.45acp

I carry a Glock 26 a lot of the time when the weather is warmer, and I don't want carry a heavy .45. It's been a proven companion, but I think my attachment has more to do with the pistol's reliability and durability rather than being enamored with the 9mm.

My winter carry is probably going to shift to my FNS-40 just because I shoot it so well, the .40 has a bit more performance to it, and winter clothes can hide the duty-size pistol. That gun just melts into my mitt, and it's actually rather handsome when you compare it to my beloved (but admittedly ugly) G26. This last ammo drought has taught me the value of a good .40 S&W.

If you want to get down to easy to shoot and gives a lot of performance, .45apc out of any flavor of 1911 is really hard to beat. I love shooting it, but I'm not a fan of the weight of even my Officer's Model. However, it just points so well. 7 rounds of .45apc is good medicine for most anything you're apt to encounter in your day to day.

AKElroy - Your energy estimate of "roughly" 500 ft/lbs is "roughly" 100 ft/lbs higher than Speer claims for that cartridge.

To get 500 ft/lbs of energy from a 124gr bullet you have to move it at 1350 fps. Speer quotes 1220 fps and 410 ft/lbs of energy. Still serious stuff though.

I voted 9mm because that's what I carry most often (Ranger T 127 +P+). I also frequently carry 38 +P 125 SJHP's.

I'm a fickle shooter. I've got carry guns in 9mm, .357 mag, and .45ACP and enjoy them all. If I had to pick just one, I'd probably go with the 9mm but I'd hate to give up the other two.

I use DoubleTap +Ps, loaded with Speer GD's. They run 473ft lbs. out of a 5" bbl. DT loads them hot.

Most commonly carried

Is .40 S&W.

But I seem to have a multiple personality. I feel quite at peace with a .357 Magnum or .45 ACP. I also like .38 Special and when I'm feeling quirky, an old S&W M39 in 9x19. I rather like .44 Special, but I don't have what I consider to be a concealment gun in that caliber.

I tend to carry .380 (Sig P238 pocket-carried) the most often, but that has more to do with the platform than the round. At some point I will try out the P938 (a friend of mine recently got one) and if the recoil isn't excessive, I may switch to carrying that instead.
