How will the gun be used? Carry? Range? What other guns do you already have?

My choices would be:
Springfield EMP - daily concealed carry and great shooter
Kahr MK9 - great for deep concealment, not so fun at the range but better than PM9.
HK P30 - great for untucked concealed carry or range - awesome ergonomics / reliability

If I could only have one of the above it would be the EMP.

First choice would definately be the Hi-Power, hands down. Second is the Kahr CW9. Have both and they are great.

Can't go wrong with the common guns mentioned - stick around $500 and spend the rest on ammo and training. Glock, CZ, XD would be my top choices. For home defense a larger frame is better for controllability and accuracy due to longer barrel and sight radius.
