M1911 9mm Dan Wesson Pointman 9, if you can locate one. STI TROJAN 9mm or the cheaper SPARTAN. For a DA/SA H&K P30L or a SIG P226, striker fired polymer, Glock G34 and 10 extra magazines, Blachawk holster, 4 mag pouches and a pistol belt to boot.

Man I hate to admit this since I'm a 1911 guy.

If I were buying 1 and only 1 gun with no intent of buying another firearm for several years...I hate to even post this under my screen name but I'd buy a used Glock 23.

:banghead::barf::banghead::barf::banghead:

My only logic behind this is because for $1000 I can also buy:
  • .357 or 9mm barrel and mags so I can essentially have 2 gun calibers available. See thread: http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=211887
  • A 22 lr conversion kit so I could practice, practice, practice, practice with drawing, sighting and firing CHEAPLY. I know people down the 22, but it kills people every year and it is definitely good to practice on, particularly on YOUR model carry/home defense gun. Under $7 for 100 rounds at your local walmart...that's almost as cheap as my kid's cap gun.
  • I may even have enough money left over for a quality holster or tactical light.

You may be able to do these conversions cheaply with an xd, which would be nice since used xd's are easier and cheaper. You'd have to surf the xd forums for that answer. Either piece is a quality item.

I still carry a CC 1911 for the record, hopefully I won't be flamed for my recommendation. :neener: If somebody gives me $1000, I'll put a $1000 or so with it and get that bob tailed custom commander I've always wanted. ;)

You mentioned you don't own any guns. I would buy a Springfield XD or a glock. The XD has better safety features so it a good first gun. Both are poly-more plastic guns. get the one that fits you the best. Other guns you need to keep oiled and cleaned for them to function properly. You still have to clean these guns but they take a lot more abuse. That is why police departments usually issue these two guns. These guns can be had for easily for less then $500 unless you live in some anti-gun state like California.

Spend the rest of the money on Ammo to break it in and learn how to shoot.

Look at budsgunshop.com for the prices of guns. Then go down to your local gunshop and see what they have. If it's within $50 you might be better to buy it local then online.
Don't buy at gander or Cabela's they usually way more expensive. At least here in Texas that is the case.

I guess I would tip my hat to these in this order

HK P7- $600
Browning Hi Power- $600
Cz 75 Pre B model- $400
Glock 19- $500 or less
Beretta 92- $450
Smith and Wesson 3913- $400
Sig P6- $400

An XD, holster, night sights and a whole lot of ammo.
:scrutiny:

But then again, I already have 2, 1-9mm and 1-.40 Sub Compact.

For range and home defense, CZ 75 with Kadet Kit as opined above. Best of both worlds. Also can be easily carried concealed with lots of leather available, if you change your mind later.

No guns currently owned. Home defense, no concern for concealability. I'm just real comfortable with 9mm and shoot much more accurately vs some other larger calibers I've had

For that purpose, I'd go with one of the following:

-S&W M&P9 (the pro model with the better trigger and sights is still well within the price range)
-CZ 75
-S&W 5906

Those are all excellent 9mm's, and none of them cost near $1k. Seriously no need to spend that much if you aren't looking for something super special.

id go HK p30. best ergonomics on any gun ive held and deadly accurate too.... i drool at the thought of one...
but i would also recommend a FNP or a glock 19 - both are solidly built guns and easy to handle.

Even better, get thee to a rental range and find some that fit you. Handle a bunch, and rent a few that seem to fit you well, go from there.
