Hi,

I have a chance to get an older S&W 4006 with the non-lazer-etched serial number.

Are they reliable? Are they well made? How much would one in good condition be worth?

Thanks for your help,
Jason

Very reliable, very well-made. Those heavy duty third-gen Smiths are extremely durable.

That said, if I ever trade a gun, that's the one. But that's more personal preference than the inherent design.

I had one about 10-15 years ago. It was NOT reliable. It would FTF one round every 2-3 mags. I sent it back (along with the mags) to S&W, they polished the throat etc. When it came back there was no improvement.

I don't knowif I had a lemon, whether the shape of the .40 bullet is just harder to feed reliably, or what. I don't think it was a case of limp wristing because I have other guns that work fine for me and the 4006 is a reasonably heavy piece and shouldn't be too sensitive to such things.

Next to my SIG P239, my 4006 has been the most reliable of all my pistols. It is reliable and rugged. However, the trigger is what I would call gritty even after several thousand rounds through it. I'm sure a competent gunsmith could smooth it out a bit, but the feel is not all that bad it's not that important to me. Also, the trigger/disconnect system is one of the most complicated I have ever seen. Nonetheless, as I said, it is reliable.

My only issue w/ the S&W semi autos is the grips - if they fit you tho, they can make for very nice pistols....robust, reliable and the few I've owned have been above average in the accuracy dept.
