Does anyone have one?

I've heard quite a little talk about the few Yugoslav AK's that exist here in this country and that they are the best AK's (these are AK-47's only to my knowledge, no 74's) that you can get.

With this in mind, I was wondering if anyone has one, and if so, could you report on it, and also, does anyone know of a source to get Yugoslav AK's, and how much do they usually run?

they are based on a kalashnikov style but have different sized components so you will have trouble finding surplus replacement parts. - this isnt new for yugolsavia though- pretty much everything I've seen with a zastava name on it (mauser, SKS, AK, RPK etc) are all slightly reengineered versions of their predecessor.

also- I've never heard that yugo AK's are the "best aks"- I was under the impression that valmets were the best when it comes to AK's

Preban Yugos usually run in the 1k to 2k range, but recentley m70 and m92(krinkov) kits have made it here and are being made into rifles or pistols. I've seen these below 1k. Yugo's are known to be more accurate than other aks, because of the lack of chromelined barrels. Many people shy away from them because of that, but if you are either a collector or just regulary clean your guns, you'll be all right.

By the way Arsenal of Bulgaria are the "best aks".

What made the Yugo AK's desireable was that they used RPK recievers. This means 1.5mm instead of 1.0mm sheet metal recievers, over sized RPK trunions.

I don't think I would agree that Arsenal AK's are exactly the "best" AK's out there, but the Bulgarian parts kits they use are very high quality.

Also, I'm not talking about Krinkov's, but just regular AK-47's.

I said Bulgarian cause Yugo and Valmet were thrown around, I wonder if anyone else will come out for the Chinese. I personally like the feel of milled receivers.

M92 is the krinkov, but the M70 which is the rifle version has also come in the US as part kits. The M92 are brand new from the factory, cutting up a new gun. The M70s that came in were from used rifles. Heres one right now that is built into an underfolder that is available.

I have 2 pre ban Yugo AK's. One under folder and one with a nice big Teak wood stock. The metal is indeed 1.5 mm thick, making it about 2 pounds heavier (also bigger trunion ect.) They are very well put together and have nice trigger pulls and are accurate.
The downside is the scope rail is NOT warsaw pact specs, you have to find a high dollar set up. And the weight is kinda much for a non RPK gun.
I also have a 7.62 x51 Yugo AK and that is a different deal; you want the thick metal in that one! I have an infra red Yugo night vision hook up on mine, which is why I moved it to my other residence in Oregon!

Ammo Depot in Caddo Mills TX has a Yugo RPK for sale. Like new condition, IIRC, with a drum magazine for about $1435.

His number is in the (903) area code but I don't know it offhand. The official address may be in Greenville, it's kind of goofy how that stuff works out there. Ask for Mickey

Here's what anywho thinks it is:

I'm building a couple of Yugos at the moment--a fixed and an underfolder. The kits themselves are demilled yugo civil war relics and are in rough shape. The lack of a chrome-lined barrel, coupled with corrosive ammo and poor maintenance shows.

However, the construction of the rifle is fantastic. Replacement parts should no longer be an issue with the importation of all the demills. Its just "beefy" comparted to the hungarian and romanian models.

I'll post a follow-up with pix when I finish the project.
