So I haven't been on here a lot lately what has happened everything has changed?

Can someone please explain what/why this happened also is it possible to go back to the old style I loved and knew so well!

Well, it's pretty straightforward: Google has been penalizing us for years because:
  • We were running vBulletin 3.8.x, we didn't want to upgrade to the newer branches, and Google assumed old software = malware vector
  • We were essentially delisted from mobile search because we didn't have a mobile-friendly skin. We couldn't add one under the old software
So we shopped around, decided on this software about a year ago, did lots of testing, and migrated over the weekend. This is here to stay.

The look and feel is still being worked on though - the staff member who is a graphic designer unfortunately has a day job, so it'll probably be a few days. The Test THR style is the one that's being tweaked.

I really like the "THR Test" theme, its a lot easier on the eyes than the bluish white "default theme". Yeah, there are some things that need to be touched up, but I like it so far. I also appreciate being able to see the post count (oops...I mean "message" count) of members in the THR theme as opposed to the count-less default theme.

Yeah, I'm over my initial shock ... and soon realized this is the same software one of my local forums uses, so it's not brand-new ... but it was a little disconcerting to click on and find this whole new look.

God forbid anywhere in internet-land someone runs a website that Google doesn't favor, right? No need to fight assimilation ... for now. (Actually, this new version does look a lot better, and has some much-improved features.)

Not a fan of Xenforo myself, another long-time forum of mine went to it and I kinda drifted away. But this is a tad different and hasn't caused me angst yet, so I'm getting used to it. It's just that I'm a member on sooo many vBulletin forums, so I'm very used to that.

It's funny. I've been away from THR for some time. I was auto notified about the migration and "rediscovered" it. This software is very familiar to me and my two favorite things about it? It renders very well on Safari and I can post photos easily from my iPhone. I haven't so much as touched my personal PC laptop since I've had an iphon/iPad so these two things are somewhat important to me. Believe me, you'll quickly come around to this.

One thing I miss is the member post counts. Other than that, I really like it, especially that quoting someone else is a lot easier.

I'm warming to the new software. You know, the old dog and new tricks thing.

Thanks to Derek for all the hard work.

Should have left well enough alone. I believe these changes will lose some older members and I personally don't see anything to attract new members.

Such is life it seems.

I for one am trying to remain neutral. I liked the old format. However, I also liked the Apple format and never thought I could ever possibly in a hundred years use an Android. Here I am using an Android tablet, once I figured out where everything was, it works just fine!

Pros for this new system...
THR was on top of my "Bing" search! It might have been before, but when I used Google or Yahoo last week it was all about "The Hollywood Reporter".

THR has a " like" button! Maybe I'll even use it someday...

Cons:
The message count is hidden until I click on someone's stats. I liked having it right there and visible.

So far, thanks for the hard work admin team! I enjoy this forum more than my relatively low post count shows. Hope we can keep going with it.

Edit: What's with the trophies and points?

I did like the old one better.
Stats and stuff aside--I can give or take those--the new stuff seems like it takes up a lot more space for the same info, and the colors all blend together.
Just some feedback, in case someone's tinkering with that.

I go to THR for the people and content, not the avatars or color scheme or typeface. The fact there is a good sysadmin who does what needs to be done to keep the site running is WAY more important to me than his choice of tools.

It will take some getting used to, but I am an old-timer and have gotten used to a lot of new things. I am still getting over the whole BitNet->Usenet migration.

It's about the forum showing up on an cellphone or tablet. The people who link here have changed what kind of electronic device they are using. I still use a net book but many are switching to tablets and phones. The internet originally was set up for simple near monochrome display but as competition and tech got more intense it seemed we really pushed display and visuals to an extreme.

Goes to all those old threads stating "56K dial up slow loading" in the day, remember? Well, moving into phones did the same thing, mobile electronics couldn't handle the huge amount of display and it slowed down page loading. When you are looking at a small 4" screen, things get horribly cluttered, and the mobile services were translating a lot of the visuals by stripping out certain features. That introduces more delays and errors.

If we want fast loading and a clean look on phones and tablets, we need to have fast loading clean pages to work with. A lot of web sites are transitioning to mobile friendly software because of this. It's not just this site, it's industry wide. Phones are driving the change. Desktops and laptops are fading away as the primary display.

That might be overly simple for the guys working the levers behind the scenes, but it should give an idea what's up.

And there is also the fact the old software was prone to hacking, which caused a big scene a few months back when thousands - literally thousands - of websites went down due to an attack. Old outdated software isn't such a good thing in today's internet.

And yes, there are a few tweaks needed, the reply box is a bit indistinct. Doesn't seem to stop us tho.

I like the new layout. I also like the post count being hidden, but accessible. It gives members the chance to think of all thread posters as equal as we all know post count doesn't necessarily equate to real world experience. For instance, if post count equalled experience, my post count would be less than 10. :D

I am glad to read that the High Road graphic designer will be tweaking things. The logo at the top of the forum needs color tweaking to work with the blue background. Maybe make the letters in white?

Also, the bottom page ads don't go away when I log in as they do on other forums. Unfortunately, that interferes with typing on my mobile device (phone).

That's on me, either because of my choice in an ad manager, or my inability to twiddle the knobs and dials. Ads are showing there they shouldn't, and my task for the day is making that work better.

If you click on the user's screen name, a small window pops up displaying that information.
