New 10mm Ruger SR1911

I've been in the market for 10mm for a few years now.

First I wanted a Kimber Target, but never had enough cash for one.

Then I felt like a RIA would be sufficiently good for something that would only get rolled out a few times a year, but I can never find the model I wanted (single stack, no rail). Not available in stainless isn't a deal breaker, but it is preferred.

But this... enough shops stock Ruger's locally I should be able to find one. It has the same MSRP as their Target .45acp which Bud's has currently at about $750, which is very agreeable compared to the Kimber's price.

One of these may very well end up in my safe. I almost picked up one of their lightweight 45 commanders, but fell into a good deal on a Colt. I very much like Ruger, but wouldn't consider myself a fanboy. This might be the right gun, at the right price for me.

I'm thinking the same thing, I already reload 40 S&W so I have the dies and bullets. Might be something fun to play with, and share some hunting time with my revolvers.

I got a 10mm bug as of lately. I'd settle for a 460 Rowland.

Funny how things shake out. I was just kicking around the 10mm 1911 idea and was on the fence about an RIA.

This Ruger would scratch that itch for sure.

I looked at Ruger's website. Having owned and operated a Colt Delta Elite, a Kimber Eclipse and several other 10mms, I believe our friends at Ruger are doing some very smart things with their version of a 10MM 1911. Their site indicates their 10MM will have a ramped bull barrel. A 10MM 1911 needs all the recoiling mass it can get if one intends to routinely shoot the "real" 10MM ammo. The Bull barrel adds recoiling mass. Extra heavy recoil springs, buffers, etc,do not make up for mass. The ramped barrel provides superior case head support. Both very good things if one wants to use 10MM ammo equivalent to the old 200 @ 1200 Norma, today's Buffalo Bore 220 @ 1200, 180 @ 1380, etc. The gun shown has adjustable sights. Very practical due to the wide velocity range, bullet weight and power level of handloaded and factory ammo available for the 10MM cartridge.......ymmv

BTW, for those who do not favor the FLGR, there are ways to use a regular GI type guide rod with bull barrels.

Thought about a 10mm. when the Colt Delta Elite first came out. Then came reports about how the frame was taking such a battering that I decided against it. Would be interesting to see if this new Ruger has design improvements to keep it from getting beat up by full house loads.

I'd be surprised if Ruger didn't overbuild this thing six different ways to Sunday. At a guess, I would assume that your wrist will pulverize and your bank account empty over the years before the frame gets battered to an appreciable degree.

Looks like a chunky gun that makes no promises of being a convenient "forget it's there" carry piece.

If I didn't already have my Dan Wesson Pointman 7 - 10M I would jump at the Ruger. I got into the 10MM about 8 years ago and love it. I reload so it was an easy transition. My gun shoot extremely well and manages the recoil which is not that much more that the 45 ACP. Then again I only shoots max loads in 45 Automatic which is a Spring Field Loaded model. My 10MM sees about 1/3 max loads and they are fun to shoot. Good luck with the Ruger and let us know how the purchase works out.

Glad to see another 10mm available.

Over ten years ago, when I had my first 10mm, I bought a ton of ammo to insulate myself from whether the round survived, or not. Great to see it appealing to so many.

Wonder if someone at S&W is yelling "Scotty in engineering, we need a 10mm NOW!".

I'm going to insist that was Colt's fault, not the 10mm.

A competent mechanical engineer or a physicist would have immediately specified rounding the square cut slide stop hole in the frame.

Watch how fast an aircraft mechanic would be fired for cutting a square hole in an airplane fuselage.

The 10mm simply drew attention to a design mistake. Correcting it made all 1911's stronger.

That was actually a lesson hard learned in real world testing much like the 10mm 1911's if I'm not mistaken. Just much much more costly a mistake.

There was a fairly popular early commercial airliner that the flaw was recognized after 3 had already disintegrated mid-air.

But on a better note, this Ruger looks like it's building a 1911 with everyone else's engineering lessons learned.

If only they offered it in high polish stainless, It would be exactly what I would want out of a personally ideal 10mm. I think I can deal with having to use a little elbow grease to fix that.

10mm is dead.

Such was uttered by more than one. Those who know me and read my posts on various forums, 10mm forum in particular know I am kidding above. What I find interesting is how Ruger rolled this one out. Looks to me like they actually have the pipeline fairly full first. Not selling vaporware.
