Hello:
For about a year I fancied carrying .40 and .45 in order to assess what they offer and what I needed. It was a year of detour. After shooting them extensively I came to the conclusion that they were just as good as my 9mm, may be bigger in most cases. A question I mulled over a long time that justified buying more guns in various calibers. (I was so ignorant to even give 5.7 a chance)

In conclusion I found that it is best for me to stick with my Glock 19 and hk p30; and pratice the heck out of them. I have my 19 for well over 2 and half decades and the P30 I got a few years back. Between the two I found myself more accurate with 19. Btw does anyone what is bullet count before we need to change springs on 19? Or how to check if it needs any changes- for aboout 25+ Years I have had 19 there has been ZERO malfunctions- same with P30. Knock knock.

I guess with age I am begining to become minimalist of a sort. Sheded a lot of collection to a point I may have total under 10 with each weapon catering to different need from EDC SD HD to Hunt and Skeet.

Any thoughts you may have or similar experience- please share. Thank you

What did you learn from shooting them extensively that led you to believe the .40 and 45 ACP are as good as the 9mm ?

I can shoot 1000 rounds of 147gr TMJ and 1000 rounds of 147gr WInchester Ranger "T" Series and not learn anything about terminal ballistics or either bullet's effectiveness versus the other one.

He learned that the 40 and 45 can shoot through paper just as well as 9mm can. Nothing else.

That I am only protecting myself against other humans not from alines from the outerspace who dare stand tall in front of 9mm shots and keep coming because their mother ship says 9mm will do no harm.

The 9mm FMJ has killed millions since it came out.

Hits to the upper torso will shatter bone and penetrate just as well as 45, 40

On average I shoot 2.5-3Rds of 9X19mm compared to 1Rd of 45ACP thus its a matter of economics. Concealed carry 45ACP I've carried the 1911 series and S&W4506, either was not problematic. I'm in my seventh decade physically active and not confused with a Lard Barge. I have service connected disabilities but don't use them as crutch to be less physically active.

For concealed carry in the warm weather month's a S&W MP9c (12Rds) and the cold weather month's a S&W MP9 (17Rds). I have experimented with the S&W Shield 9X19mm and 45ACP. The Shield 45 has been a disappointment to date its been returned to S&W for a 2nd time with the ultimatum to S&W fix it or replace it but don't send it back till then. A functional 45 Shield would be an attractive CCW year round for those that like the 45ACP.

This morning at our personal range on the property, we went thru (150Rds-Federal HST 147Gr JHP +P) with the S&WMP9 ( 48Rds-Federal HST 147Gr JHP +P) with the S&WMP9c and (48 Rds 230Gr FMJ 45ACP) Colt Govt Model 1911).

Shooting the 9X19mm this day was more costly than the 45ACP but its usually the other way around.

Out of many (and I do mean many) firearms, I only have two side arms.

I carry a PT-111 Millennium Pro in 9 para and hunt with a GP-100 6" Full Lug .357.

I have never felt under-gunned in either case.

The rest are long arms.

I am with you.

I carried a .45 for years and finally just settled on the 9mm (years ago). The Glock 19 is probably one of the best choices, although I personally don't own one. I have a couple 17s, a 26, a 43, and a 34 but never a 19. When people ask me what they should buy as a carry gun, I always tell them a Glock 19. I just have never owned one and I can't give you a good reason why other than I guess I just didn't want to spend the money for it.

I didn't learn all that much about caliber selection from carrying or shooting the guns I carried. But, I did learn quite a bit about it working as a paramedic for the last 3+ decades.

I have several handguns in 38, 380, 357, 44 mag, 45 ACP, 9mm, and 10mm. The G19, G26, or Ruger L9S in 9mm are the only ones carried on regular basis. In rare cases the 380 if I need extreme small size. The G29 in 10mm is my woods gun when hiking/camping in bear country.

The others are kept only for nostalgia.

I don't really care for Glocks only on an aesthetics basis, My winter carry gun is a Ruger lightweight 1911 commander I suppose just because I'm utterly familiar with the 1911 and shoot it well. That said I get to shoot a friends 1st generation Glock 19 often, and like it. Really really like it after he installed a trigger kit. That gun has fired probably many thousands of rounds in it's life with no malfunctions and it's very accurate.

My family is prolly heading in that direction, but it may take some time to get there. Lots of components and good deals on other cartridges, combined with a general desire to at least be proficient with a broader range. But odds are good by 2020, 90% of the rounds fired in competition and practice will be 9mm. Of course, if everyone does this, there might be streams of once fired .40 S&W brass too cheap to pass up.

Many people tout the Glock as their carry piece... if I could hide a Glock 19 on my person, I could hide a 1911 .45, and that's what I would carry. I envy those that can hide a full-sized pistol like a medium- or large-frame revolver, or 1911/high-cap auto.

A few years back I was down to just 9mm and .22 handguns----have since expanded into a .357, a 10mm and several .45's---its just nice to have variety.

From what I've seen the 9mm is quite deadly.

Have you tried in front of the hip, like 2-230 or so (right over the front pocket)? Some folks seem so glued to the 4 oclock position they fail to realize that somebody types just arent suited to it. Myself I can't hardly carry an LCP at 4 or 5 oclock, but put it in front and I can carry a Glock 21 with little issue

I used to carry my Colt .380 at the 2:00, but I can't do it with anything larger. I'm in and out of my truck all day and it's pretty uncomfortable to sit with the muzzle jamming into my leg... or other regions. It also makes the pistol almost inaccessible when I'm sitting in the truck.

Just call Glock, they will tell you. My even do it for free.
I was having a problem with my G19 gen 2 and they had me send it in. When they got it I got a call that the frame was cracked. It came back completely rebuilt except for the barrel and the actual slide. Even the mag and the sights were replaced. Frame was upgraded to gen 3. All free. Shoots great!.

I carry my hipower right around 3:30. Having to get In and out of a vehicle was one of my considerations, and I found this to be the best spot. Every now and then when my driving gets "spirited", it'll pinch my butt between the muzzle and seat, but meh. Nothing's perfect.

It's still wholly inaccessible unless you can yoga...but that's why there's another pistol in the console (whole 'nother thread).

I love the idea of picking one platform and becoming really proficient with it.

I'd rather have a handful of guns that I shoot (reasonably) well than a whole bunch of guns that I never shoot. (Honestly, I've never had the budget to collect guns, so I've always had to multi-task guns (i.e. a 12 ga for hunting and HD). Besides, my dad always liked the adage "Beware the man with only one gun, for he probably shoots it very well.") In any event, when I started carrying, I carried a .45 1911. After I realized how heavy that one was,and I started looking into buying ammo by the case, a 9mm G19 began to make a lot of sense. I keep thinking that I'd sure like to carry something like a Shield in .45, but that would require a whole new gun, mags, ammo . . . I'm not convinced that 9mm is "as good as .45," but I believe it to be adequate for carry.

Interesting, probably holster related, but I carry my full size 1911 at around 2 with a 10 degree cant. In my truck the barrel rides along my hip and is quite easy to reach if I remove the cover garment when I buckle in.

Ive found it is by far my best location for driving.

I had a similar experience.
