So, I have seen some postings on here both ranting and raving about the 10/22...so I thought I would share my own.
A couple years back I got the idea into my head to turn my bone stock late 1990s Ruger 10/22 into a higher performing machine. My dad gave it to me as a Christmas present when I was a kid and I didn't shoot it much anymore...so I thought if I upgraded it I would.
So, I made a plan of all the parts I wanted to replace. Basically...it turned out the only thing I was going to keep was the receiver. I got the gun out of the same and started to look it over. I had forgotten that my idiot brother had borrowed it and put a big scratch in the finish of the receiver. I also had forgotten about all the memories in that rifle. I decided if I was going to change everything except for the receiver...I might as well just get a new receiver and build a whole new gun. So, I decided that ole Ruger will stay as is and it one day be the first gun my sons learn to shoot...and I would build a whole new rifle.
So, I did a bunch of research and decided I wanted to build the rifle mostly out of KIDD parts. I purchased a Black KIDD 10/22 Receiver which came with a rail. I also purchased a 2lb single stage trigger, a Black Fluted Aluminum wrapped lightweight barrel (threaded with flash hider), KIDD bolt with scallop finish, and a custom bolt handle (from a shop I found in Idaho that I can't remember). Yes...a Ruger logo on a gun with no Ruger parts is a little odd...but it looks cool. I also added all the necessary little parts...receiver pins, take down screw, V-block, Bolt Buffer, ect. The stock I choose was a Tactical Solutions Vantage stock in red. I had a Leopold 3x9 scope my dad gave me years ago for a hunting rifle that never got mounted so I picked up some quick detach rings and put that on as well.
Although I haven't done more than longer distance pinking so far...this rifle has been a ton of fun and a complete joy. I'm going to add a bipod next and start really working at bench and prone shooting. I figure this is the rifle to start with working on that type of shooting. Because I haven't done a lot of real high end type shooting...I couldn't give you a solid numerical value for it's accuracy. But, I have been able to get better than 2 inch groups at 100 yards without much effort. I think with a bipod and some practice 1 inch or better is certainly within reach.
The rifle has functioned flawlessly too.
I just thought I would share it because it's been so much fun.
I'm planning adding a suppressor in the future (which is why I got the threaded barrel)...but for now it sports a flash hider because it looks cool.
I'm going to make a couple small tweeks to that other 10/22 that my dad gave me, but I plan on keeping it mostly stock.
