My Beloved 10/22

I “rebuilt” my 1980s vintage 10/22 over a period of twenty years, eventually keeping only the receiver (sorry slickracer!). I used a combination of Volquartzen and Kidd parts all bedded into a Boyd’s Barracuda brown lamo stock. It is highly accurate, with good ammo agging in the 0.1s at 25 yards. Lots of fun.

While I certainly appreciate classic designs and own several “classic” rifles, I also appreciate all forms of firearms, yes even the dreaded “black rifle”! I owned my 1981-purchased AR-15 before MSRs were cool, I built my custom 10/22 before it became a popular activity, and I built an M98 sporter with walnut stock back in the 70s.

Bottom line, I like seeing all the different variations of 10/22s. I may not want to own some of them, but I appreciate them. I feel sorry for those who are so close-minded as to denigrate another’s choice in firearms, particularly in the current climate where we all need to hang together.

I'm sorry, but as an unapologetic traditionalist where "classic" looks are adored and revered and off-beat, freaky and pretentious appearance is scorned, if it were my rifle, it would reside inside a brown paper bag. Beauty is said to be in the eye of the beholder, an adage to which I would only add, "so is ugly".

Looks are, by definition, subjective in nature. "Whatever floats your boat" is the only valid consideration when opinions on appearance are made. In this case, my boat floats on a very different ocean...;)
Honestly, I generally agree with you. I like the classic look on most of my firearms. I wanted to do something different with this one...something that would feel comfortable to shoot and stand out a little. I think I did that and I really enjoy it. But, I generally agree with what you are saying.

I've accurized several 10-22s and have one that looks like a 10-22T, but has had extensive improvements to factory parts and a Shilen bull barrel. It shoots great and is a joy to shoot. It has also won about 40 turkey shoots on steel targets.

I like all guns. I may not like the looks of all guns but I can appreciate all of them for what they are. Because I dared to express an opinion (and I think I made it abundantly clear that any opinion that I or anyone else has about the "appearance" of a firearm is purely subjective and counts for nothing in terms of anything else) would suggest that I am some how "close-minded" or intolerant of "another's choice in firearms" is pure demagoguery. Anybody who knows me knows that I am as eclectic as a person can be when it comes to firearm preferences and appreciating the importance of the need for unity with fellow Americans in preserving the Second Amendment.
Having a different opinion, even a negative one, is not the same as denigration and I strongly resent anyone implying otherwise. Any opinion, especially a negative one, expressed about something so subjective as "looks" should never cause someone to feel less about something they like. If my opinion in the instance at hand caused anyone to feel undue angst about their choice in firearms, I apologize-it surely wasn't my intention.

Enjoy you ocean. Mine floats in that ocean but I also have one that floats in the wild and crazy world of 10/22s. As you say, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and I can see out of both eyes.

We all like what we like. There’s nothing wrong with that. I had no issue with what you said.
