So, I have seen some postings on here both ranting and raving about the 10/22...so I thought I would share my own.

A couple years back I got the idea into my head to turn my bone stock late 1990s Ruger 10/22 into a higher performing machine. My dad gave it to me as a Christmas present when I was a kid and I didn't shoot it much anymore...so I thought if I upgraded it I would.

So, I made a plan of all the parts I wanted to replace. Basically...it turned out the only thing I was going to keep was the receiver. I got the gun out of the same and started to look it over. I had forgotten that my idiot brother had borrowed it and put a big scratch in the finish of the receiver. I also had forgotten about all the memories in that rifle. I decided if I was going to change everything except for the receiver...I might as well just get a new receiver and build a whole new gun. So, I decided that ole Ruger will stay as is and it one day be the first gun my sons learn to shoot...and I would build a whole new rifle.

So, I did a bunch of research and decided I wanted to build the rifle mostly out of KIDD parts. I purchased a Black KIDD 10/22 Receiver which came with a rail. I also purchased a 2lb single stage trigger, a Black Fluted Aluminum wrapped lightweight barrel (threaded with flash hider), KIDD bolt with scallop finish, and a custom bolt handle (from a shop I found in Idaho that I can't remember). Yes...a Ruger logo on a gun with no Ruger parts is a little odd...but it looks cool. I also added all the necessary little parts...receiver pins, take down screw, V-block, Bolt Buffer, ect. The stock I choose was a Tactical Solutions Vantage stock in red. I had a Leopold 3x9 scope my dad gave me years ago for a hunting rifle that never got mounted so I picked up some quick detach rings and put that on as well.

Although I haven't done more than longer distance pinking so far...this rifle has been a ton of fun and a complete joy. I'm going to add a bipod next and start really working at bench and prone shooting. I figure this is the rifle to start with working on that type of shooting. Because I haven't done a lot of real high end type shooting...I couldn't give you a solid numerical value for it's accuracy. But, I have been able to get better than 2 inch groups at 100 yards without much effort. I think with a bipod and some practice 1 inch or better is certainly within reach.

The rifle has functioned flawlessly too.

I just thought I would share it because it's been so much fun.

I'm planning adding a suppressor in the future (which is why I got the threaded barrel)...but for now it sports a flash hider because it looks cool.

I'm going to make a couple small tweeks to that other 10/22 that my dad gave me, but I plan on keeping it mostly stock.

Very nice! I did some similar stuff to mine, but I kept the original receiver. Everything else is changed. The Kidd trigger is great! I can't recall offhand the specifics of the mods I made. I have the records packed away.

I have had the same one for 30 years- a deluxe model (from back when there were only 2 models- standard and deluxe). All that has been done to it is a 4x nikon scope was added. It shots 1" groups at 50 yards. This is about all I use it for- squirrels and pests generally fall to my Savage MK2 suppressed.

Good looking rifle.
I rebuilt an old 10/22 reciever i found in a parts bin into a .17m2, and when it wasnt exploding it was fun. I havent forayed back into the 10/22 world since....kinda feels like i need one tho

Very nice rifle, however, I don't quite understand going that far and not using a better receiver, like a Kidd. Using a stock receiver with all those nice parts is kindof like building a house with a wooden foundation.

You must have misread my post. That occurred to me before I tore apart my old rifle (that and sentimental reasons). It has a KIDD receiver. So now I have two 10/22s.

Nice custom build! Looks great and should deliver in the accuracy department as well. I have had my 10/22 for close to 40 years now and I like it just the way it is without any sort of modifications, save for the sling swivels and Weaver scope that I added. It's still very accurate (shoots into an inch at 50 yards). If I were going to have another 10/22 I would do as you did and start from the ground up and build an entirely new gun.

I have kept my other one just as my dad gave it to me. It was how I learned to shoot and how I want my kids to learn. I will probably change the bolt release because I hate it but likely won’t do much else.

My dad and his prairie dog shooting friend both have custom 17 hmr 10-22 magnums and they also have an unpleasant tendency to explode. I prefer my rifles to keep there exploding to a minimum.

Very nice 10/22 rifles guys!

I got back into shooting rimfire much more last year and started thinking of upgrades to my 10/22. Many years ago I put in a Volquartsen trigger and that is very nice. Last year I tested a bunch of .22LR ammo to find the best ones that were not too expensive since this is not a target gun. Now I am looking at bolt upgrades and just upgrade the Simmons 4x scope to a Leupold VX1 2-7x33. Kind of thinking of getting an old Sporter stock for it to replace the boot paddle that is on it now.

I was thinking it might eventually need a new barrel but I think instead I will put funds into a Tikka T1X next year for my target shooter. Keep the Ruger as a tuned plinker.

I'm sorry, but as an unapologetic traditionalist where "classic" looks are adored and revered and off-beat, freaky and pretentious appearance is scorned, if it were my rifle, it would reside inside a brown paper bag. Beauty is said to be in the eye of the beholder, an adage to which I would only add, "so is ugly".

Looks are, by definition, subjective in nature. "Whatever floats your boat" is the only valid consideration when opinions on appearance are made. In this case, my boat floats on a very different ocean...;)

I thought it, but you said it.

SwampWolf ... if it makes you feel any better I'm thinking of getting a canvas gun sock in a brown paper bag finish ;p

While I also usually prefer more traditional designs, that is a very clean, functional set up, SharpDog. I like it!
