Guns you paid way too much for, but don't regret it

I got thinking today: what's a gun that you've spent way more than you could justify or what made sense, but it somehow ended up being worth it to you?

For me, I saw a CZ 527 at a local gun shop on the used rack and immediately fell in love. It was $600 on the shelf with the scope rings still on it. The gun shop owner in question tends to price his stuff anywhere from high to outrageous ($480 for a Hi-Point carbine still sticks out to me). So not knowing anything about it, I said "I'll go home and look around the internet, I bet I can find it for cheaper." Well, as soon as I found out it actually was a good price, the gun was already sold.

But I was in love, so I spent $650 on Buds to get one new, then had to spend $70 on rings for it (had NO idea CZ's rings were so expensive). And of course, you're not going to throw a Tasco on a $720 gun, so I dropped just over two bills for Redfield Revolution 3x9. And then, of course it's getting a nice leather sling, so that topped it off right at around a kilobuck. $1000 for a bolt action plinker - so much for buying it to shoot cheap 7.62x39.

And I don't regret spending a single cent.

Every bit of that gun screams quality. If you haven't seen the CZs, they are just about the nicest factory rifles you can buy this side of a Browning, and the Redfield is a very nice scope for the sub-200 yard shooting I'm doing. It's light, it's easy to shoot offhand, the CZ set trigger feels like a custom trigger, it's dead-on accurate, - I don't know, I just love it a little more every time I take it out. It kind of started off as a money pit, but it's now looking like the last rifle in the safe I'd ever get rid of.

On the other extreme, I built an M16A1 clone, thinking a lightweight, full-size AR with a carry handle would be the bee's knees. I spent more than I should have putting it together (seriously, prices for everything AR have hit rock bottom EXCEPT for the retro parts), and now that I have it, it's just kind of ehhhh. LOVE the carry handle and A1 rear sight, it's like the perfect in-between size for a peep sight between the A2's two settings, and the 20" barrel gives you a much better sight picture than a carbine. But when I'm shooting it, I can't help but think "this does absolutely nothing my Delton Sport doesn't do for a pound lighter", "why did I pay $800 for this when I can just shoot my carbine."

If I had to do it again, I'd just put the A1 upper on the Delton and make kind of a poor-man's XM177 out of it, then just forget the A1 rifle entirely. Not going to get rid of it though - for one, it's not a bad gun as much as it is disappointing, and two, the super-saturated AR market + home assembled gun means I'd take a soaking if I ever tried to sell it.

Last year I bought a Finnish M24 Mosin Nagant for £600 (around $780). To give some perspective, beat up M44's go for around £300 so it was only twice the price of the cheapest Mosina's.

When I received it, it looked its age - over 100 years old. I handloaded some 185gr Scenar's with Reload Swiss RS60 (similar to Reloder 17) and hit the range. I was gobsmacked by the resulting group, shot from a bench at 100 yards using just a front sand bag.

It's the oldest, most expensive, but most accurate milsurp rifle I own. But I think it was worth every penny (err, cent!) :)

Mine was a second hand Thompson Center R55 Benchmark rifle.
These went up in price, particularly since they aren't made any longer. When they were new, they were £450. The one I got was £650 second hand. Didn't even have the box or trigger lock or 5 rnd mag.
And the 10 round mag was pitted.
I paid it and if another one came up for sale I would be tempted to get that also!

I paid $300 for a Romanian TTC a few years ago, at a time when they could be had, sight unseen, for about $100 less over the 'net.

But this one was already in my hands, right then, and was (is) in "like-unissued" condition. I'd come across it while visiting a now-closed Gander Mountain store. I had no remorse.

I can't think of any others that I "overpaid" for by enough of a margin to be of any concern. Some just cost me a little bit of a premium for the benefit of seeing it beforehand, and getting it right then and there.

Ok I thought about it and after appropriate amount of caffeine I’m changing my answer.

I paid $560. For my Blackhawk.45 convertible (Davidsons) in 2012, I over paid because an LGS was a Davidsons dealer and the gun wasn’t available locally. Great gun one that’ll be with me till the end but I overpaid IMHO.

Onky one that i can think off right now is i got the ruger american rimfire right when they came out. Think i payed in tue 3s fo it and put a nikon 3-9x40 rimfire scope on it. But its a 1/2 moa gun and 3/4 moa with any ammo i put threw it sofare.

Ruger No 1 chambered in S&W 460 Mag. I wanted one for years as a companion to my revolver, then Ruger stopped offering that clambering.

I found one NIB on GunBroker. Got in a bit of a bidding war with someone else who wanted it. Put in a final bid, and turned off my PC until I New it was over.

Turned the PC back on, logged in, and I'd won. Final price was around $1570. Beautiful rifle.
Ruger has since chambered a few more in this offering. Could have saved myself $200-$300, but whatever. Better to spend too much and have what you want than regret it forever.

Never felt I paid too much for any particular gun, only because I rarely had a lot of money to buy one in the first place! Probably over paid a bit on a used Rossi Model 92 I picked up at a gun show some years back only because: 1) I definitely wanted a lever action, 2) this one was in .45 Colt which went perfectly with three single action revolvers I have, and 3) I loved the way that short barreled carbine felt as soon as I picked it up and put it to my shoulder!

After the Sandy Hook school shooting I bought an S&W AR-15 when it was hard to find one .

Oh yea, i forgot that one.......
I am a ruger fan and my LGS had a new Ruger SR556(the good one). He was asking $1299. I had looked it over, and liked it but wasnt willing to spend that much.
When i heard of the Sandy Hook tragedy, i called to see if he still had it. He did. I bought it.
No regrets...its a great rifle.

For me it would be my Beretta Model 87 Cheetah.

I ordered it new and paid the outrageously evil price of $666.66,,,
With tax that purchase came out to $725.00 out the door.

For what the pistol actually is,,,
That was way too much for a sane man to spend.

But I had wanted one of those pistols since they first came out,,,
So when I had a small windfall of free money hit me,,,
I decided to splurge and make myself happy.

It wasn't too long after that,,,
I scored a Model 85 in .380 ACP to match it.

I got a real bargain on the 85 at $399.00,,,
So that eased a bit of the sting from buying the 87.

I have way more in this Cimarron Open Top than I'd ever be able to get out of it. To me, the engraving and Turnbull finishes were a great value but nobody is going to pay full price for it with my SASS alias engraved on the backstrap. I also paid too much to get ivory on it and then paid again to have them refit and reshaped. However, it's one of my favorite sixguns and I'd do it all over again without a second's thought. Not one I'd ever consider selling.

Unfortunately I have far too many such guns over the years. Most recently it has been first a Boberg 9mm for my wife which both of us liked so well I ended up buying the Bond Arm's Bullpup when they came out. Over $2 grand in two guns. At least my wife carries one of them every day. I will sometimes carry the other as a backup. I love the guns, but not the price we had to pay to get them.

I have a Marlin 39D that I am, I think, about to spend way too much money on restoring to better than original. It looks like almost $4 k if I actually follow through. I dearly love the gun so I just might.

That does not begin to count the gunsmithing work I have had done to slick out my carry and fun guns over the years. Oh well. Somebody has to keep our gunsmiths in business. I can feel better about it when I watch trapshooters I know spend thousands of dollars on shotgun fittings after they have already spent thousands of dollars on the gun itself while I continue to shoot my stock Winchester 101 I bought back in 1966.

My Colt 6920 with black Magpul furniture. I think I bought it in late 2014 when inventories were still tight from the panic buying. I do remember it cost me an even $1000 OTD. And I'd do it again, as it was a wedding present to myself. You can guess which endured better. :p

1963 Early build Weatherby Varmintmaster .224 WM that had been in a gunsafe for years. I got into a bidding war and ended up with $1200 in it, but the bluing and stock are magnificent!

I can’t recall really “overpaying”for a gun per se, because I’ll set a limit on what I’ll spend and I’m pretty good at sticking to it. But I will admit that I have bought a few guns (usually on GB) that I received...and later wished I hadn’t spent money on it in the first place.

Stay safe!

It looks like you are putting it to good use .

I don't know where the Model 87 falls in the Cheetah value hierarchy, but a local dealer has a new Model 81 in .32 ACP for $795. So, you probably didn't do that bad. I can't bring myself to pay that much for what would essentially be a toy, but I am somewhat tempted. It's a beautiful gun.

It doesn't help that the .380's are half that price. I shoot and reload 9mm Makarov, so I won't have any .380 guns in the house due to ammo confusion.
