"Feds are requiring it" is easier than saying "I dunno" and arguing with the customer over it.
Exactly. And why bother arguing with a non-helpful register drone?
Heck, I had a friendly register operator at the ammo counter
yesterday, and I wandered in at the right time to pick up .22 ammo (4 Federal 550 packs and a box of 22 short CB) but sadly 15 minutes too late to snag any 9mm.
When asked, "is this ammo was for a handgun?" I couldn't help myself ... pointed to the 4 boxes, said "this one is for a pistol, and this one is for a rifle, and this one is for a Gatling gun, and
this one is for a macaroni picture, and by the way where is the construction paper and Elmer's glue?" After that, I didn't get asked for ID, so your register drone was just following the prompts and deflected your question rather than answering it.
Wal-Mart conspiracy theories are a depressing symptom of how dependent we have all become on WM. What would they have done if you didn't have a Driver's License? There are other legit forms of ID, and not everyone over 21 bothers to get a DL, you know.
If you don't like it, buy ammo elsewhere, I buy much more ammo outside the blue box of trailer supply than inside ... but I expect some hassle whenever I venture in there, just due to their crappy hiring and training policies.
